NEW YORK -- Airplanes just got a little bit furrier.
Pet Airways has announced it is launching the first pet-only airline service, with flights going to five major cities: New York, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

I have never considered putting my pets on a plane, I'd rather drive with them to monitor their safety and anxiety. My concern would be the qualifications of the pet attendents: will they be certified in pet first aid? In addition, I would have liked to hear a bit more of what kind of safety measures are on board the plane in case the worst should happen. I'd want to know absolutely everything I could before I purchased a ticket for one of my pets. I think this is definitely a novel idea, it certainly makes sense.

That is pretty awesome. When we travel we always want to take our pet but I just can't allow her to travel with cargo. I would be worried sick about her. I think this is a great idea. It beats leaving her at the kennel.

Certainly a better way for pets to travel than in a plane's cargo hold. Actually was just reading in the May/June issue of "Best Friends" magazine that Pet Airways and Best Friends have formed a partnership. "Pet Airways has made a financial commitment to Best Friends and will also be donating flights to help transport resuced animals....This will not only provide a safe, comfortable and fast way to transport animals, but also a big cost savings for the organization."

I agree, I think this is a good idea but I would want to be traveling with my pet. I don't want to trust them to some stranger who I don't know will take good care or any care of them. Why can't we fly with them?

i've gotta agree with the general consensus. it's definitely a step up from anything that's out there, but the idea of having my critters on a separate plane, surrounded by strange people and animals...that sounds only marginally less terrifying for them. now, an airline specifically for people and ets traveling together, where they could fly in the cabin *together*...that would be phenominal!

I was and never willing to place my pet in pet cargo, I flew and paid the price of the seat next to me so she could stay in her portable/cloth pet crate in which she is under thirty pounds. She sat strapped in with the seat belt and had a nice flight.
I think more airlines should do this. I carried her on board just as you would a suit bag or a large purse.

My two goldens won't fit under the seat! And I won't put them in cargo. Good idea for those who want to have it....just a little risky. Why do you have to pick them up in a lounge? Why can't you be with them all the time? Hope the commercial airlines realize this and make more room for our pets on board....with us!

It's a great idea in theory, but I would still be nervous - losing your luggage is one thing but if I lost my pet on a flight, I'd be devastated. Plus, while the employees may be great people, there's always a chance of having someone hired that slips up or just doesn't really care. It happens with vet clinics, groomers, borders, etc. and so it will happen here eventually. Sorry for the rambling, it's a cool idea if you don't mind leaving your pet in their care.

This souns like a great idea, but couldn't the animals still get lost? The airlines lose baggage all of the time, so it seems like there would be a chance that your animal might not make it to your destination at the same time you do.

I'm still somewhat leary of this. It seems that there would still be room for losing a pet or someone mishandling it. I'd feel safer traveling with my furbaby.

I agree. Wouldn't it be just as easy for airlines to update part of the cargo section and turn it into a pet section. They could add the same climate controls and air purifying systems that they already have in he cabin and then people could have larger dogs on the same plane as them. The animals would be more comfortable and safer than being left with he baggage.

I'd sacrifice my comfort to travel with my dog. I don't care if I have to sit on the floor. This still has the potential for the dog to get lost or mistreated.

i think this is a great idea. I fly my cat with me everywhere and stay at the Westin. I couldn't enjoy my vacations when I feared for my pets safety. I had one get feline aids while she was being cared for at a pet hotel. So after that I decided to have a friend take care of my cat and her son let it out and it was never found. That was it. This one travels with me.

I agree, Joyce! I couldn't just leave my baby like that. I'd want him to fly right along with me!

This is a great idea! However, I'm still not sure how many people would use it. Still makes me nervous at the thought of my dogs being on a plane. I guess I'm not much of a plane person myself!

I have been fortunate, I have had to take Riley on planes several times...and he has been able to fly in cabin...yet you do pay for a "seat" for him. Since our pets are such a big part of most peoples lives, it is great to see that companies are looking at ways to accomodate them. It would be hard to be separated from them.

I think this is a great opportunity for people to be able to take their pets on vacation but i can definately see that there will be some problems that have not been mentioned yet.

I think this is a great idea. When I moved across country I had to take my cats with me. I did not feel comfortable with having them in the loud, cramped cargo of the place. However stowing them underneath the seat in front of me was equally as hard for me to do and still traumatic for the little guys. If you must fly out your animals I think this airline is a great idea.

this could be pretty fun to have my pet come with me on a long trip.
