ummm...anyone else remember when david letterman got bit for petting a friendly dog under the chin? you don't know what a dog was trained for and you shouldn't touch them in key spots until you do.
also, facing a dog can be threatening to them even w/o eye contact. dogs who are scared or stressed or those few who are aggressive could see this as a sign of dominance. if you're faced w/a potentially dangerous dog, you should stand w/your side to them.

One time I walked Skitters and this girl asked to pet her I said no she is unpredicatable around strangers she likes some strangers but not all of them and I would rather not take the chance of her biting someone so I tell everyone no but this stupid girl said oh all dogs love me she won't bite me and the girl started petting her anyways as I walked away Skitters didn't bite her but Skitters growled at her under her breath when the girl walked away. I am so glad Skitters did not bite that girl I might not have her today if she would have bitten her.
