Mutt Wins Dog of the Year Award at Westminster

The 15th annual Westminster Dog of the Year Competition was held this week in London - a mixed-breed rescue named Max took home the top prize.

Max was adopted from a shelter home in Cheshire England. Owner Mike Hall says the first time he started the lawn mower, Max got so scared that he jumped into the washing machine.

Among other dogs in the contest, Max's closest competition came from a cocker spaniel named Myrtle and a black lab named Buster. Last year's winner was Tag, a 7 year-old German Shepherd.

The Westminster competition is open only to members of parliament, but it aims to promote responsible dog ownership.

It's about time. Mutts are just mixed breeds. That's the same thing a "designer" dog is: a mixed breed. Mutts are just as good as pedigree if not better.

I'm so happy that a mutt won such a wonderful award. I have always thought that mutts are some of the best dogs out there.

Its important that we keep raising awareness to shelter pups that need adopted. This is a great way to let people realize "mutts" are great dogs too.

Good for the shelter dog mutts. I also read where many of the tv dog stars are rescue dogs and are mutts. They are so smart and so happy to have a great home!!
 
It's so nice to see a shelter dog win this award. Way to go Max. You are an inspiration to others.

Any contest that aims to promote responsible pet ownership deserves five stars! It's also good that a mixed breed won the contest ~ highlighting the mixed-breed's worthiness.

Had mutts most of my life they are just a special as any breed of dog, all pets are bright and beautiful, all pets great or small, all pets are wise and wonderful because the Lord God made them all. I know I'm corny but I don't think there's an ugly pet around, just different and special and unique.

I've got three great mutts at home. Their personalities are so diverse and wonderful. I love my rescued babies!!

I'm glad that for once a mutt won the show. But I was under the impression that to enter a dog show that your animal must not be spayed or neutered. I wonder if this was the case with Max, or did they make an exception or have they relaxwed the rules to allow spayed and neutered animals. Or am I just plain wrong with my thinking?

That was cool. It is neat to hear that the dog doesn't have to be a pure bread in order to win! I know it is true, but you rarely hear about it. Go Max!
