Mutt Show Raises Money for Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition
For most people, the sound of the words "dog" and "show" together conjures up images of pampered purebreds strutting their stuff under television lights in an immaculate ring surrounded by velvet ropes. That was hardly the case last week at the first annual Brooklyn Mutt Show, where the borough's most magnificent mixed-breed mutts gathered to compete in 16 different categories — all for the sake of raising money for the Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC) and drawing attention to the needs of homeless pets in the New York area.
Without a hint of the pomp and circumstance of bigger dog shows, the Brooklyn Mutt Show got underway in the Brooklyn Lyceum Theater and Café amidst the swirl of mutt hair, the odd accidental puddle, and a whole lot of curious sniffing.
A Fun Show for a Good Cause
The Brooklyn Mutt Show was conceived as a way to raise money for BARC, and the event succeeded with flying colors, raising over $2,000 for the organization. The event was also designed for pet owners and pets to enjoy mixing and mingling with other mutts. Mixed breed dogs from all over the area came to prove that their purebred brethren don’t have a paw up on them when it comes to strutting their stuff on the proverbial dog show runway.
BARC: Taking a Bite Out of Animal Homelessness One Pet at a Time
BARC's mission is to provide safe haven for homeless animals and find permanent, loving homes for these animals. The animals in BARC’s care receive quality food, shelter, and medical attention. The organization works to meet the needs of homeless animals through the assistance of dedicated volunteers, revenues generated from the success of its pet supply business, and from private donations.
Let the Competition Begin
The Brooklyn Mutt Show featured sixteen categories, or “classes,” that began each hour. The fact that this show was organized specifically for mutts wasn’t the only thing that set it apart from a traditional dog show. The typical show dog and handler might not recognize most of the categories in which the mutt show dogs were competing — categories like Sloppiest Kisser, Most Nutritionally Challenged (judging an entrant's, ahem, size), Looks Most Like Owner, Looks Most Like Anything Other than a Dog, Least Useful Pet Trick, and Senior Stud (8 Years and Older).
All mutts that competed received a professional glamour shot, a discount ribbon to use at the doggie vendors, and a “doggie” bag of treats and gift certificates. Winners were presented with rawhide trophies that they could gnaw on after working hard to show their merits for the judges. The winners also all received a special place on the Mutt Show website, as well as the honor of having their portrait featured in the Lyceum Café for all to see.
Entrants paid $5 each day to register their mutts — the same amount that spectators paid for general admission and the chance to see some really cute and personable dogs all in one place, having a blast.

This year marked the first annual Mutt Show, but organizers say the show will be back next year to showcase the most beautiful mutts in Brooklyn. In the meantime, check out BARC’s website for some inspiration on how you can help out now. The shelter currently houses about 30 dogs and 75 cats, not to mention some kittens, and is always looking for volunteers to come by and spend time with the animals there. Who knows, if you fall for one and take it home, maybe next year you can enter it into the Mutt Show — and fame and glory could await you. But even if you don’t win an award, you’ll still get wet kisses, happy memories and lots of love.
