It's sad that's it's gone on this far when it may have started from a single puppymill or backyard breeder. It's tragic when animals are suffering, especially when it most likely could have been prevented in the first place, or at the least caught early. Too many breeders only care about profit, not all of them, but from what I've seen & heard most do.

Breeders including backyard/hobby breeders would be out of business if people stopped buying these puppies & kittens, since their primary purpose is profit. Until there's more restrictions, &/or the general public realizes the conditions many of these cute pet store & online puppies & kittens come from, we can pretty much expect to hear more news similar to this.
I do have sympathy for those who are dealing with this, I imagine they love their furbabes as much as [most] the rest of us do.

I am surprised I had never heard about this before--I will have to pass it along. I know so many people with sweet, wonderful Labs.

For them (the researchers) to have found the first naturally occurring mutation of this specific gene is a breakthrough within itself. Too bad such a common breed is the one afflicted because it would expectedly take a long time and a lot of tests to finally breed this mutated gene back out of the entire population.

WOW, talk about a harmful mutation!! To think that this was found is amazing. I wonder how long it took to locate this mutation. DNA is so complex it really amazes me that this was identified. Makes you wonder about other purebreds and the possible mutations that they may have.

As an owner of two Labradors I am so glad that they discovered this mutant gene for EIC. Although EIC is horrible, this discovery is wonderful because it will now allow breeders to screen their breeding stock, thereby reducing the number of afflicted Labs. This is a great discovery! Great job!

Since I have lab mixes I was glad to know that I didn't have to be worried about them. None the less I'm glad that the mutant gene has been discovered.

Maybe an actual good reason for getting your "mutt" DNA tested! This is scarey I have known many labs who would go and go and go....sad.
