Mr. Clucky Orderd Out of Miami, Appeal Planned

Browse News

MIAMI -- Mr. Clucky, the plucky rooster, has been ousted from his Miami Beach roost, as of Thursday's coding ordinance hearing.

The pet rooster and owner, Mark Buckley, found themselves in court after neighbors complained that livestock was living in the building.

At the hearing, Special Master Joe Kaplan a ordered Buckley to pay a $50 fine and gave code officers the authority to remove Clucky and his girlfriend, Wallflower, from his condo.

But Kaplan also encouraged Buckley to consider asking the City Commission to grant a special exception to the current codes.

Before this latest notoratity, Mr. Clucky has been a public attraction along Miami's South Beach, attracting tourists and known to locals for his regular outings to the popular hot spot.

"People seem to love Mr. Clucky. They love to hear him crow," said Buckley. "It's kinda something different for them, kinda bringing a little nature to the beach."

Mr. Clucky could be called the resident rooster of Miami Beach.

"Everyone knows Mr. Clucky," said Greg Glover, a resident of Miami Beach. "He's like a dog, he's got so much personality."

On any given day, people can spot Mr. Clucky and Buckley riding a bike up and down Lincoln Road, the popular outdoor mall of shops and restaurants. Mr. Clucky's large claws and talons let him grip the handlebars of the bike with ease.

"He seems to be a natural on the bike," Buckley said. "Occasionally we go on pretty long rides. He loves to be on the bike."

He's also known for volunteering at schools and nonprofits to raise awareness about factory farm animals, being named Miami Beach's "Activist of the Year" by Metro Mix Magazine in 2008.

Eds. Note: This article is one of four news stories happening right now in the world of pets and animals. Be sure to watch the Zootoo Pet News videocast above to stay current.

The honor comes after Mr. Clucky's involvement with animal welfare causes, such as leading the "Walk for the Farm Animals," joining a local eighth grader's protest against Kentucky Fried Chicken's alleged torture of animals and being the mascot for Critical Mass, Miami's Earth-friendly activist and bike riding enthusiast group.

This tall tale of "man and bird" began almost three years ago.

"I found Mr. Clucky in my neighborhood in Miami Beach," Buckley recalled. "He was hurt in the bushes, his beak was cut off to his face and he had a cut on his head."

Buckley says he will appeal the order so his rescued rooster can continue living his normal life of making folks happy.

The issue of having chickens as pets came up in the city of Buffalo. They have decided to allow people to keep hens but not roosters.

This sucks. As some of us zootooers have expressed before on this topic- aren't there better things to worry about than a rooster who wasn't hurting anymore, brought tourists in, helping the city's revenue and just bringing a little joy into the world? I mean the Cluckster should be left alone- he was being cared for and actually had a good job. what's the problem with that?

It would be interesting to see where he's kept in the condo. I had pet roosters as a kid and they were really messy and fast moving. I think they need a lot more space than in a condo. I hope they can come up with a good solution for everyone.

It also would be helpful to know how the condo is sound proofed. Can the rooster's crowing be heard in other apartments or is there enough insulation to contain the noise?

Poor Mr. Clucky. Not everyone or even livestock belong in a condo. There is a time and a place for everything and even though so many people love Mr. Clucky, they aren't the ones living with him in the condo. I can understand that crowing every morning can get a little annoying and so can the smell of chicken poop. I'm sure most of those people never lived near a chicken farm. It's not pleasant. Anyway, I wish Mr. Clucky the best.

Apparently everyone doesn't love Mr. Clucky, or they wouldn't have complained about the livestock in the condo. You know, whether people on the beach like him or not, I'm not sure I'd be ok with someone keeping roosters next door to me... Listening to that could get old really quick.

At 6:30 AM last friday, I was opening the slider doors to air out the house and heard a rooster or 2 or 3 crowing off in the distance, I liked the sound but knew the actual rooster/roosters were a distance from me and in a semi rural area. I like pet owners to win causes but the pet should win too.

Why are these things there for years if it's against the law? That's like saying, "well, you moved into an area where people steal each other's stuff. They've been doing that for years, can't try to change it now!" I think people should absolutely not be criticized for trying to uphold the law. And how do you know before you move into a condo that your neighbor has a rooster? Not the first thing I'd think to check.

Maybe the Rooster can sleep elsewhere and the owner can continue to drive him around on his bike. Keeping the hen covered would probably be okay in a condo. I just know Rooster crowing in the morning makes me want to scream. Talk about Karma, now I have a Pentacostal neighbor who prays so loud at 5 30 a.m. every morning I know every time he cheats on his wife!

I was all for Mr. Clucky until last week when I read he lived in a condo, not a single residency, not outside and with his girlfriend besides. Maybe a bit to much nature. We once had 3 hens living outside at our tract home and even w/ cleaning up after them, sometimes the odor was not flower-like. Maybe it's time for his owner to find a new place to live where Mr. Clucky & friend can run around and hunt for yummy bugs!

Yes, it should be taken into consideration all the good that Mr. Clucky & his guardian have been doing for the animals! I'd think that Mr. Clucky should be considered a good animal citizen & that his neighbors should just deal with it. Sure it can be annoying, but this is one less chicken being severely abused & going to the slaughter. If only more people were vigilant when it comes to cockfighting!

Kelly (nitewisp) makes a very good point. If Mr. Clucky and his owner have been doing so much for good causes, shouldn't this be taken into consideration? I think this is the first time it was mentioned that there was another chicken living in the apartment, though. I used to have to clean the chicken coops when I was a kid, and the smell wasn't a bit pleasant!

I can't help but wonder about the smell in hot, humid Miami even if they do clean up, the rooster and hen are inside but smell travels. I saw a women on Judge Judy suing a friend that turned her in for having over a 100 rabbits, chickens, fish, snakes, etc. in her apt. The officials that took her pets said it stunk but she refused to believe that it did. People do this in the name of love for their pets w/o really thinking what is best for that type of animal.
