MN Vet Says Pain Meds Can Deter Healing

Browse News

ST. PAUL, Mn - A Minnesota veterinarian who lost his license because he didn't prescribe pain medication to a dog whose broken leg he set says he'll defend his decision, "because it was the right thing to do."

See why he made that decision in our exclusive interview by clicking the link to the right of this story.

This is the first time I have ever heard this. It would be hard to not give pain meds to an animal, even if they do slow healing.

Weird. I think the benefit from pain meds would outweigh any possibility of them causing slower healing.

Of course they feel pain. Witholding pain meds makes no sense.

Pain meds are fine with me, but you don't always know to what degree the pain is.

I can't even imagine my dogs being in pain. It's proven things are healed even with pain meds, so I don't see any reasons not to give them.

This article makes me so mad. Did you know that doctors also used to think that babies couldn't feel pain and now they know that they feel more pain than the average adult. So I say why not give them pain meds. If it slows the healing process, who cares as long as we are doing what we can...

I have to rethink my opinion on this, Is it the drug companies pushing this idea, I've seen many pets come home after spaying and you keep them comfortable and let them rest, no pain meds. Should we start giving them this because a drug co. who benefits from the sale says so. I think I may have rushed to judge and need more info. We want to treat our pets like our kids but the fact is they are made different from us.

A person needs to have confidence in their vet and if they did not why did they take their pet there in the first place

I would know if my pet was in a lot of pain! The medication they used when my dog had a surgery on his ear was very hard on him! After I brought him home, for 6 hours he had sleep apnea (stopped breathing for periods of time) I talked to the vet who said it was the pain medication! I was afraid to take him back to the vet because I sat with my dog the whole 6 hours and would wiggle him when he didn't breath for a while. I didn't trust the vet clinic to give him one on one attention. If my dogs don't need it, I don't want them to have it!

I agree with a previous poster that this vet needs to update his medical education. He is seriously out dated on matters of pain control in animals. I would not use a vet with this thinking.

Hey - how is this doctor doing? I hope that he is well and still able to practice. It sounds like I would agree with what he did. So I hope that it all works out for him. Please update us on his case. I would love to make sure that it all turned out well. Thanks. : - )

I see the doctor's point. If the lab appeared to be ok, the vet should be able to use his best judgement. Maybe the lab could've been observed after treatment to see how it was responding.

I think pain meds should be given for a specific period of time and then tapered down. I wouldn't want to have surgery without having pain meds afterwards. That is why medical doctors only give you so many. You take them as needed and eventually stop. I don't agree with this vet.

It seems like there are two points of view towards pain medication. I don't think Seeman should have lost his license. He was using his judgment in determining whether it was needed.

Sounds like he has taken this to the extreme. I mean a broken leg. There should be some type of pain killer involved in that.

Janie brought up a good point. If a little pain is pressent they wont be jumping around and hurting themselves. And you can do a lot of damage if no pain is felt.

I know my vet does not routinely administer pain killers because he says if they hurt enough they will not be up jumping around and tearing out stitches, etc.

I disagee. I broke my arm I broke my foot. No pain medication was needed.
My cat broke her back leg and had a cast and she was not in pain and needed no pain killers. She healed beautifully. And I would have known had she been in pain. Pain is present before you put it in a cast. The pet is sedated when they put the cast on so no pain is involved there. Once she was in the cast she was out of pain.

I agree with you. I think the pain is when the break has not been put in a cast. My cat broke her back leg and she healed beautifully. She only had to be sedated for the cast itself. I, too have had several breaks in my bones and no pain medication was ever needed. I was in pain until the doctor put me in a cast.

If it was my cat who was being treated by this doctor, I would insist on pain medication. If you don't want the animal to use the leg, put it in a sling. Just because the animal doesn't show any signs of being in pain doesn't mean it isn't!

I don't think a sling will help when a break is present. When I broke my arm, the slling didn't take the pain away. I had no pain after the cast was put on.
My cat Broke her back leg and only had to be sedated for the putting on of the cast. Afterwards she had no pain and healed beautifully.

also if the dog doesnt feel the pain and goes running around on a bad leg then it could get worse, also like in humans

in humans pain signals to the body that is something is wrong, that it needs to be fixed so then the body send stuff to fix it. so i guess it works like that in dogs

This just can't be true, pain slows healing, not make it faster. He deserved to lose his license, I hope he never practices again.

Why would dogs be so different than humans? Humans heal MUCH slower if there is pain, so that's why pain relievers are so vital after surgeries, accidents, etc. Stupid guy.
