MN Pup Killed by Loose Pits

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn – The owners of a five-pound Pomeranian are calling for action following an attack by two pit bulls earlier this week.
John Fena and Edwin Schumacher say there was nothing they could do to save their five-pound puppy Gretchen. She was attacked late Monday, as she walked around her fenced in back yard.
According to Schumacher, Gretchen and the couple's other Pomeranian were doing their business when the pit bulls jumped the fence.
Fena says he tried to get Gretchen out of the dog's mouths. He recalls thinking that if he let go of her leg, the dogs would tear her apart.
At one point the melee almost entered the couple's home. By that time both men were frantically trying to save their dog. Unfortunately, the pit bulls were too strong for the delicate pup and Gretchen died later that night.
Minnesota recently beefed up it's dangerous dog laws. Local animal control says the attacking dogs in this case fit into the new definition – which states that if a dog attacks another animal off its owner's property, it can be labeled dangerous.
Schumacher says he feels as though people who own pit bulls in his neighborhood think the laws don't apply to their dogs.
Fena and Schumacher's other Pomeranian managed to escape attack that night. As for the two pits, they ran off. Animal control has increased patrols in the area in search of the dogs. For more on Minneapolis' dangerous dog laws, go to ci.minneapolis.mn.us.

And yes, Cheryl, I do think the media plays a huge role in this. When my dog was bitten by a small dog (possibly one that looks just like yours) the media was not pounding down my door trying to do a story on the most recent local dog attack? Why do you think that was?

I don't know, but making excuses won't solve the problem and convinces those of us (or our pets) who have survived attacks that all you care about are your (currently) nice pits. Everyone who gets attacked or killed and everyone who writes about it is picking on your poor dogs and many of you gang up on them as if you were pits yourself.
Do you really think that we should all risk our lives or the lives of our pets by assuming that every pit we meet is a great dog until they prove they have a bad owner? And if your pit turns, what will the excuse be then?

I hope those other dogs are caught and the owners are brought to justice.

p.s. I used Chihuahuas as my example because they are known as being cute, friendly little critters. I don't have anything against them. :)

Once again here's a pair of dogs getting the blame. There are no bad dog breeds when they start out in life. It's the ignorant, mean people who raise them to turn out like they do,not the dogs. My brother had a mixed pit that would attack anyone that shouldn't come into the house, and yet the dog would let the kids do anything that they wanted.
You can't keep blaming the dogs when it's the people teaching them, and letting them roam free.

These dogs should not ever be owned without serious licensing training and the harshest of penalties. People don't walk down the street with tigers or have them loose in their back yard. There's a reason for that and it applies to pit bulls as well. As far as I'm concerned the fact that the pit bull lovers blame the owners is proof not that the dogs are harmless but proof that really strict control and punishment is needed.
