MN Pup Killed by Loose Pits

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn – The owners of a five-pound Pomeranian are calling for action following an attack by two pit bulls earlier this week.

John Fena and Edwin Schumacher say there was nothing they could do to save their five-pound puppy Gretchen. She was attacked late Monday, as she walked around her fenced in back yard.

According to Schumacher, Gretchen and the couple's other Pomeranian were doing their business when the pit bulls jumped the fence.

Fena says he tried to get Gretchen out of the dog's mouths. He recalls thinking that if he let go of her leg, the dogs would tear her apart.

At one point the melee almost entered the couple's home. By that time both men were frantically trying to save their dog. Unfortunately, the pit bulls were too strong for the delicate pup and Gretchen died later that night.

Minnesota recently beefed up it's dangerous dog laws. Local animal control says the attacking dogs in this case fit into the new definition – which states that if a dog attacks another animal off its owner's property, it can be labeled dangerous.

Schumacher says he feels as though people who own pit bulls in his neighborhood think the laws don't apply to their dogs.

Fena and Schumacher's other Pomeranian managed to escape attack that night. As for the two pits, they ran off. Animal control has increased patrols in the area in search of the dogs. For more on Minneapolis' dangerous dog laws, go to ci.minneapolis.mn.us.

I think that the owner of the pits should take responsibility and have the dogs put down. No exceptions. They jumped the fence into someones yard and killed their dog.

I know, I've been posting the same comment a lot lately....It is interesting that people think that it is this particular breed of dogs that is causing such a problem. This breed has been around for hundreds of years. The difference is that now it is the dog of choice for a lot of irresponsible pet owners. Before pits, people were scared of dobermans, rotweillers (sp?), and german shephards the same way. Even if we get rid of all bully breed dogs, there will be another dog that will take its place that everyone will focus on. People seem to forget that ALL dogs are ANIMALS and that when you come on any dog in the street you should not trust that it is nice.
And yes, Cheryl, I do think the media plays a huge role in this. When my dog was bitten by a small dog (possibly one that looks just like yours) the media was not pounding down my door trying to do a story on the most recent local dog attack? Why do you think that was?

This is a very sad, but all too familiar story. The truth is that all dogs can be unpredictable in the hands of an irresponsible owner. Having owned dobermans, I know what it is like to raise and train a bully-like breed. When someone decides to own a dog such as a pit bull, the responsibilities are incredible. They are a wonderful breed of dog if raised in a loving home and properly trained. However, as we have seen in the media and some of us experienced first-hand, pit bulls often don't end up in responsible homes. The solution is not to ban pit bulls altogether. If people want to raise aggressive dogs and pit bulls are banned, they will move on to another breed, causing it to be banned sooner or later.

I'm really horrified at all the people who comment trying to make it sound like pits are these helpless, innocent victims. Yes, as I say in all my posts, the dog owners have a large share of blame. But all these replies that complain about the media is crap. Maybe they're in the media all the time because they do it all the time. Or do you all think it's just a media conspiracy? Maybe pits get more attention than Chows and Akitas because there are a higher percentage of them?

I don't know, but making excuses won't solve the problem and convinces those of us (or our pets) who have survived attacks that all you care about are your (currently) nice pits. Everyone who gets attacked or killed and everyone who writes about it is picking on your poor dogs and many of you gang up on them as if you were pits yourself.

Do you really think that we should all risk our lives or the lives of our pets by assuming that every pit we meet is a great dog until they prove they have a bad owner? And if your pit turns, what will the excuse be then?

Having had firsthand knowledge of a situation almost exactly like this one ( A close friend 's Pomeranian was attacked and killed by 3 pit bulls who went over her board fence. This happened in a split second while she watched with horror.) I have to say that I do not believe that pit bulls should live with other dogs, or if they do, they should be caged when the owner is out. Another experience I know of first hand is a young pit bull who showed no agression toward other dogs was placed in a home with a young female pit and he killed her, they were playing and suddenly he went into some sort of mode and wouldn't let go of her even though she was dead for an hour. I believe that with the 300 years of training we are seeing some sort of 'genetic whisper" and while I don't believe in banning pit bulls and euthanizing family pits, I would not own one. I do beleive that San Francisco has the right idea, spay and neuter all of these dogs and let the breed die out. That with the new tougher legislation against animal fighting would help this problem and it is a problem.

There is the rumor that Pits are typically the first to turn on it's owner, in fact anyone. However, I as well as many others I'm sure say it's all how the puppy is raised. If they were raised to fight and be aggressive then by golly thats what they are going to do whether anyone likes it or not. It is sad though when Pit do "turn" and the easiest thing to blame it on is the dog, however it is who owns the dog. They should turn their attention towards the real reason, not the product of the reason.

unless there is something medically or genetically (too much inbreeding?) wrong with the dog and this can apply to any breed, the dog is not the problem but the owners are. I know several people who have pits and have NEVER had a problem with them. Training is always the key, if they are trained to attack then they will!

The focus on pit bulls is overboard. Pits have a bad name and people focus on this. If it had of been another breed of dog who attacked this dog would it have gotten as much media time. I own several breeds of dog, including a pit bull and I am more worried about my mini dauchand biteing someone, than my bull dog. The mini dauchand though is my pit bulls best friend, he loves her. There is a 40 pound difference in their size. My bulldog also will defend a cat. One of the problems is that people don't see little dogs as a threat. I have been bit, chased, etc by smaller dogs. I have noticed that most larger dogs will back off if they don't percieve you as a threat. Smaller dogs do not back off, they just keep coming. When I was bit by a smaller dog it was just laughed off by the owners and months later they commented that they did not really think that it bit me, that it just had long nails and scratched me. I really wish now that I had went to my local hospital and had it taken care of and documented. I really wish people would lay off the pitbulls. Get a life people, any dog is territorial. It is the owners responsibility to control their dogs, so you owners that feel you can let your dogs just wander up into other peoples yard, you need to get responsibility for your pets to.

Stories like this make me fear BSL even more. It really angers me that pits get a bad rap. They do have a tendency to be animal aggressive (that's what they were bred for), but not human aggressive. The owners should have a taller fence...I do feel bad for the owner of the pomeranian. Any being can be raised to be vicious, so I blame the owners, not the dogs. And if they knew they were animal aggressive (after all, it also depends on the individual), they should've taken the necessary precautions. Pits are my favorite breed because they have an undeseved reputation & news articles like this just feed the fire of paranoia.

i have known many pitbulls that were very sweet. i believe it is mostly how they are bred and raised. most any dog that run in a pack will attack. instead of blaming pit bulls blaime the people who bred them and raised thae and let the run loose in packs. the pack mentality can show in any breed

They weren't necessarily trained to fight, more likely not socialized correctly and they most likely not in a good environment. I rescued a "bait" dog and she doesn't go on rampages to kill other dogs, She actually gets along with most.

How sad for this family and the poor pom. It is dog owners like the owners of these two pits that cause responsible pet owners SO much trouble.

very sad!

My sister has a pit bull. He is an overly energetic goofball, but not aggressive and definately not mean. They have raised him to be a pet for their kids and a family dog for themselves. They also have a 7 month old baby who is the pits favorite person in the world. The baby pulls his ears and jowls and he makes no move to attack. My point is that any dog can be a bad dog and any dog can be a great dog. We shouldn't stereotype breeds anymore than we should people.

I am so sorry that they lost their pet. The blame should not be placed on pit bulls as a whole though. These two particular dogs are to blame...not an entire breed. As long as we keep calling pit bulls and other bully breed dogs dangerous and aggressive then the people who want to train them badly and teach them to be aggressive and fight are going to do so. If Chihuahuas were labeled by a majority of people as being dangerous aggressive dogs then I am fairly sure that we would have a Chihuahua dog fighting problem. We need to stop calling the breeds aggressive! Punish the deed not the breed! If a breed has a bad reputation then of course those people who want a dog that will do bad things (fight, attack) are going to gravitate toward a dog of that breed. Again, I am very sorry that these people lost the dog.

p.s. I used Chihuahuas as my example because they are known as being cute, friendly little critters. I don't have anything against them. :)

You absolutely can not blame pit bulls for this. Pit bulls are extremely loving and good family dogs when trained properly. However most people don't train their dogs properly. You can't learn obedience from a book or Cesar Milan. You need to see a good trainer and a good animal behaviorist if there are other issues. This is for ALL dog breeds. Pit bulls are not to blame. The owners are to blame. People who judge pit bulls based on the actions of a few (with bad owners) and being terribly judgmental and should educate themselves further.

Poor Gretchen and her owners,I really hurt for you.
Once again here's a pair of dogs getting the blame. There are no bad dog breeds when they start out in life. It's the ignorant, mean people who raise them to turn out like they do,not the dogs. My brother had a mixed pit that would attack anyone that shouldn't come into the house, and yet the dog would let the kids do anything that they wanted.
You can't keep blaming the dogs when it's the people teaching them, and letting them roam free.

I know of a lady who lost her little friend at a kennel. 2 pits ate there way throught the fence and tore it to pices. The cops were not call in and the pits got away with it. This little dog was not just there friend it was part of there family. I hope the pits will be put down.

I agree with you. My tiny dog was attacked in my yard and the dog turned on me. Yes the owners were irresponsible a$$holes but the dog was vicious. The cops were called and the jerk tried to blame me because Lola was unleashed in her own yard. He had no problem with a pit bull running down the block and onto my property. The police also did not make a report when the dog attacked another stray dog or a jogger and his dog.

These dogs should not ever be owned without serious licensing training and the harshest of penalties. People don't walk down the street with tigers or have them loose in their back yard. There's a reason for that and it applies to pit bulls as well. As far as I'm concerned the fact that the pit bull lovers blame the owners is proof not that the dogs are harmless but proof that really strict control and punishment is needed.

To Mary T. and my babyboys It's people like you with your attitude that cause breed problems. It is the owner that people need to be looked at and not the breed. You have a racist mentality. Too many people are getting pit bulls simply because they think it is some kind of status symbol. Tough guys have pit bulls. And then they don't know how to properly take care of them and train them. Why were these running around loose.

Thank God that I live in a city that outlaws Pit Bulls completely. After having quite a few mauling incidents they are no longer allowed in the city at all. You can read about it here: www.thedenverchannel.com After so many attacks by pit bulls and the owners don't do anything about it, can you really blame them by doing this? I know I feel safer with my little Chihuahua!

Why do people not have their dogs properly penned? Even if you have the best dog in the whole world it WILL attack if provoked. The same is true of people. And if you dog is big enough to jump a fence then it has no business being outside of the owners yard because they should have been responsible enough to put up a fence that the dogs could not get over.
