MLB Pitchers Videotaped at D.R. Cockfight

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – A video posted on YouTube yesterday showed New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal grinning as they drop roosters into a cockfighting ring.

The video was pulled Wednesday, but was reportedly released late Tuesday. According to the New York Post, the two were honorary “soltadores” the people who throw the birds in to fight.

Mets representatives say they were told the video is at least two years-old.

"I understand that people are upset. This is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic," Martinez said in a statement. "I was invited by my idol Juan Marichal to attend the event as a spectator, not as a participant."

The match took place in the Dominican Republic, where the blood sport is legal. In fact, the event was held at the Coliseo de Gallos – or Rooster Coliseum – the country’s largest cockfighting venue.

In the video, the rooster released by Martinez is apparently killed. However, it is not clear if he or Marichal owned the animals.

It is known that Marichal has raised fighting roosters on his farm in the Dominican Republic, where at one time he had been the Minister of Sports.

Martinez is also said to have raised roosters on his D.R. property. It has not been confirmed if those animals were used for fighting.

Spokesmen for the Mets and Major League Baseball were not available for comment.

This is the latest in professional athletes’ involvement in animal fighting. The previous case being Michael Vick’s participation in illegal dog fighting based out of Atlanta.

I just don't understand what 'enjoyment' people could possibly get from watching animals attack each other.

If you look at any of the larger cities in NJ you will see this happening. In Puerto Rico as you get off of the plane you pass a large coliseum devoted to cock fighting. It is a horrible reality in a lot of countries.

for the lady who wants to boycott the Dominican Republic: Why dont you worry about whats going on in America before you want to go and fix another country? How about you go out and feed someone who is homeless or help out a Veteran of a foreing war!!! I suggest you worry more about our country before you want to make comments about another that obviously you know nothing about!!!!!!

It doesn't make a different if it happened two years ago or twenty years ago. It doesn't make a difference that it is legal in the Dominican Republic and considered a "sport". It doesn't make a difference that this guy is your idol and you are to be an honoree. Saying that you are a spectator doesn't absolve you from guilt. Legal or illegal, culture or not, it is wrong. Any "sport" that inflicts this kind of injury cannot be justified. Boxing is not to the death, football is not to the death, basketball is not to the death, . . . how do you call birds ripping each other to pieces a sport?

Some of the sport role models need to start acting like role models and not like thugs. This is an inhumane "sport" regardless if it is legal or not.

I am disappointed in sports figures. They were gentlemanly back in the day. Today they take steroids and shoot birds, run dog and cock fights and generally make a disgrace of themselves.

No excuses acceptable under any circumstances. Remember sports players are supposed to be roll models for our children. They know that participation in such things is wrong for a person that wants to be involved in the public eye, just a a politician is held accountable for his or her actions.

Even if cock-fighting is legal in the D.R., shouldn't Michael Vick's actions (and repercussions) be a warning to all professional athletes that animal cruelty is a serious offense in the U.S.? I think they should be punished, because clearly, another example is needed. Athletes, especially Hall-of-Famers, are role models for so many kids. They need to be GOOD role models in ALL aspects of their lives.

Again athletes behaving badly. When will it stop. These people should realize that they are in the limelight and role models. I do not excuse and do not accept that it is "the culture" - what culture can honestly say cruelty to animals is O.K.

What makes anyone surprised about this, just because they play a sport & make lots of money does not mean that they should be looked up to or thought of as a hero.

Since this happened in his country and it is culture and not against the law there, there no punishment we can give him. But we DON"T have to give him respect even if he is a baseball star.
