Michael Vick: Game On or Game Over? Vote Now

Browse News

NEW YORK -- Michael Vick, love him or hate him, is back in the headlines as NFL Commissioner Robert Goodale has now conditionally reinstated Vick -- allowing him to participate in pre-season training and several games, that is, if he can find a team to sign him.

His former team the Atlanta Falcons, along with the New York Giants, New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys have already publicly declined interest in him.

Once considered the most talented quarterback in the United States, Michael Vick is now struggling to regain his place in the NFL.

Several weeks ago, Vick was officially released from federal custody after a two-month home confinement, which followed his 19-month federal imprisonment.

After admitting to facilitating and financing a gruesome dog fighting operation, “Bad Newz Kennels” where hundreds of dogs were reportedly shot, hung, drowned and burned alive, Vick was sentenced to 23-months in a federal penitentiary, plus house arrest and three years probation. Part of his home confinement sentence mandated Vick to work a $10-an-hour construction job -- a far cry from his former $130 million Atlanta Falcons' contract, which made him the highest paid player in the league.

While Vick was released early from a Kansas prison for good behavior, he was suspended from the NFL, lost millions of dollars worth of endorsement deals, and filed for bankruptcy.

Although his reinstatement was a challenging decision for the NFL community, many fans and teammates feel that Vick has paid his dues and has re-evaluated his life. Still others put no merit into a great talent being wasted and dispute his supposed remorse, feeling his actions are inappropriate for a public role model.

With the 2009 NFL season about to start, ZT Pet News wants to know how pet lovers feel about the issue. Take the poll above and share your thoughts.

Elisabeth Brock, editorial intern with ZT Pet News, contributed to this feature. She can be reached at ebrock@zootoo.com.

I am horrified that the Philly Eagles signed him, and that the NFL is letting him return to his fame and fortune. He should be know for his torture of dogs, not on how well he can handle a football. I am hoping for a career ending injury so that Vick will go away on his own. I only wish infamy and misfortune on this guy. He has been or will be featured on a BET TV series, claims to be remorseful and rehabilitated, but I don't buy it at all.

Plenty of animal rights groups have protested outside of arenas where Vick has played in this season's games. A couple of weeks ago there was a large demonstration outside of Oakland CA stadium when the Eagles played there. Things didn't get out of hand, no riots or arrests, but there was some pretty loud and forceful protesters present. These games are televised and the stations should show the demonstrators. Not every one is hailing Vick as some super star athlete whose horrible decisions and behavior should be forgiven.

What really dismays me is that he played for Virginia Tech, my alma matter. When I went to Tech, the football team was a joke and couldn't even beat UVA or William and Mary. I think Vick should be forced to give a portion of his earnings to the VA Tech vet school. I bet Vick really brought in the donation dollars back in his glory days at Tech, but who knows if this univ. wants to still be associated with him.

everything about a person is based on moral character and he is a loser with no morals. If i was a player i would not want to play with him his hands are dirty. he should be banned from NFL children admire these players and he is not a rolemodel he is what you show your child not to be. The game he plays is not life or death but yet he seems to think its ok for a dog to play the game..for any team to sign him would be a big mistake. i think it would be saying ohh we forgive you... he should be shamed.. something is wrong with the world.. its ok to shame someone they may have been a stripper to get through college or something like that but when it comes to an animal killer he gets to play the sport he loves it doenst seem right

I think it was someone in the HSUS (sorry not sure) who said something along the lines of letting Vick get a job, fine-whatever. But the NFL is elite and standards SHOULD be set very high to be a part of the league. So fine, let the guy go get a regular job but NO WAY let him have his former status, pay, and lifestyle be given back to him. He's proven himself unworthy. Someone who burns dogs alive when they don't make him enough money fighting will not ever be entitled to what he had -- no matter how sorry or reformed they are.

Good point. Sure, everyone deserves a second chance, but this is just too much like a reward to allow him to return to football. Let him work a "regular" job and show people how he's changed before letting him go back.

What is sad is instead of being punished for his actions he's just starting his life where he left off! If anyone thinks that the same thing won't happen again.. beware! He will just be smarter about not getting caught this time... poor innocent creatures. That man deserves to be locked up with some of his pitbulls that he turned into fighters.... see what happens to him when they get hungry! :)

Good thought but I bet he could find another way to earn a living. HEY, he could come work at the shelter I work for. It is a no kill adoption shelter! He could care for puppies, dogs, cats and kittens. He could feed them, clean up after them, take them on their daily walks, bathe them and even bottle feed the little bitty ones we find so often left at our door! We could keep michael vick busy for the next 10 years or so....oh and he'd get a paycheck. It just wouldn't be as much as he is used to getting and each day he would have the privilege of looking into the eyes of a dog and/or puppy! I am sure it would do him good.

I think that these guys get a lot of money for what they do and part of their responsibility is to be a role model for all the young people who look up to them. That is not to say they are not allowed to make mistakes, but this was not a mistake. Michael Vick knew what he was doing was wrong and he lied about it. He has shown no real remorse. He should not be allowed to return to the NFL and I would not support any team he played for.

We discussed this at length at work. Most people felt that he did his time so his right to earn a living should not be taken away from him. If there would be a public outcry about him returning to pro football and it impacted ticket sales, no one would sign him. Basically, public reaction will probably dictate the outcome which I imagine will mean he will play.

Shame, shame, shame on Mr. Goodale for reinstating Vick. He [Vick] is only sorry that he was caught-not sorry for the atrocious acts of cruelty he inflicted on those innocent dogs. Any human who would pour water on-then electrocute a helpless animal-has no conscience. Any team that signs him will hopefully feel the wrath of all animal lovers.

My two-cents' worth. While I'm not a football fan - only see it on the occasions the husband watches it (rarely), I cannot imagine why ANY team would want to sign Michael except for the hope of cash inflow. I feel he should have been banned from the NFL for life, no and's, if's, or's, or but's. He has no remorse. He's simply saying he's sorry so he can have the hope of previous income to continue his lifestyle. I truly hope any team that signs him suffers major losses due to cancellations of season tickets and boycotts that may scare off one-time game goers to buy tickets. Let him flip burgers at McDonalds for minimum wage - if even McDonald's will hire him! Sorry I'm so predjudiced, but I don't care. Flag away.

He was recently spotted hanging out in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, and some are speculating that the Steelers MIGHT pick him up. Some Steelers who were interviewed on the evening news a few days ago were asked about their feelings regarding Vick, and they pretty much stated that he has "paid his time/dues" and that they will focus on the "team" (not individual members). In short, they were ACCEPTING of him of a potential player/teammate. UGH

I would like to know why he still isn't in jail!!!! No wonder animal abuse is on the rise. There is no justice!! These heartless criminals get a slap on the hand and then are released to live a happy life, not caring about the harm they did to others. This makes me really upset!!!!

So true, I think the laws for animal abuse are not strong enough. He should still be in jail.

Michael Vick is a piece of garbage pure and simple, but sadly I am not too confident that some NFL team in "desperate" need of a winning quarterback won't sign him. Greed rules the day in organized sports--not sportsmanship. They make gods out of these guys because they can run really fast, or sink a ball in a hoop, or belt a homerun--and their sins be damned!

Vick got what he asked for. He should never be in football again, as kids will see that he was able to be an abuser and then come back and be a star and rich, too. What kind of message does this send? He knew what he was doing was wrong. What about the lives of those dogs he ruined? Does he think they can ever get their lives back? Shame on him and let him deal with it.

This bothers me so much, I have been following this story in the sports pages and I'm completely offended at how some of these football fans are not outraged by him being allowed back into the NFL. Saying that, there was one sports writer who wrote an article about one of his victims, Georgia, who had all her teeth pulled so they could breed her on the "rape table", without hurting mates. Yeah for him for having the courage to say how he feels about Vick and to go against what others in his industry are doing.

That truely is horrible what he did to dogs including Georgia. That kind of cruel heart ( like Michael Vick) does not change over night. He is truely a sick and cruel person.

I think Vick seriously needs help. I think he needs medical help because he apparently has issues. Anyone that would let such terrible things happen to animals are a danger to society!!

I LOVE football. I love animals more. I've been closely watching the recovery of the dogs at Dogtown & spent one week of summer vacation at this heavenly sanctuary. Vick was not given jail time I believe he should have gotten. I would NEVER watch a game, should he be signed to a team. Have we forgotten, "where hundreds of dogs were reportedly shot, hung, drowned and burned alive"? Public pressure and outrage need to continue.

I like the comment in the article: his actions are inappropriate for a public role model. I agree. You want to be in the public eye. There is a responcibility that comes with that. You act out of that "code " and you should suffer the consequences.

Famous or not. I always felt the penalty was too light. But at least it drew attention to this horrible 'sport'. And I'm hoping it will continue to discourage any others from trying to take up dog fighting.

As for his career. Sorry, in my opinion he should be banned from sports for life. Look what they did to Pete Rose for gambling!!!!

He had so much going for him, what a waste. Why do people think that once they get a little money and fame, they can do whatever they want. What kind of person would harm dogs or any animals like that. He says he is sorry and feels remorse, but does he or will he say whatever to get his former life back.
