Mexico Blesses Animals in Memory of Saint

Browse News

MEXICO CITY – An onoing tradition that began in the 1500s was celebrated this week in churches throughout Mexico.

The feast day of St. Anthony the Abbot marks the day of his death, and honors his life as a Christian and animal lover.

Each year, Mexicans and their animals flock to area churches dressed in their Sunday best. A special prayer is said and the animals are blessed with holy water.

The tradition was established by Fransiscan monks more than 500 years ago. St. Anthony the Abbot is remembered for giving his inheritance to the poor. Soon after, he embarked on a life of solitude in the desert, where his only companionship came from animals.

Mexicans celebrating the feast day hope the blessing will protect their animals.

Our church doesn't do this. Sure wish they did. I like to think our animals are part of our religious beliefs as well.

I think that this is a lovely custom. I am an Episcopalian, and many of our churches have animal-blessing events. To me it is a recognition that every living creature is a part of God's creation and that human life is interrelated to animal, and even plant, life.

For all of those people (my sister included) who say that animals have no soul, remember this story and other saints like St. Francis of Assisi. Look into the eyes of your pet and tell me that the little ball of fur isn't a creation and gift from God. Our church blesses pets on St. Francis's feast day. I hope that these traditions continue.

Lovely story. I think a culture that includes the bond with animals is more evolved than a culture that isn't. Says alot about the people in that culture.

My church celebrates St. Francis' day by having an animal blessing. It is really great to see all the animals. Once the priest thought my dog and another dog were getting aggressive with each other and sprinkled them with holy water!

i think that this is very clever. Not too many people are actually willing to celebrate things like that. Instead there is just violence and destruction. so once again, it deffinatly feels good to read something positive about animals.
