Menu Foods Settles in Pet Food Recall
April 5, 2008
TORONTO – Menu Foods, the company responsible for the deaths of an estimated 4,000 dogs and cats, has settled in principle, Reuters reported earlier this week.
The Canada-based company said a “comprehensive cross-border agreement in principle” has been reached following mediation with parties specific to the case.
Although there are some specific conditions required for the settlement, Menu representatives are confident a “definitive agreement” can be reachedwith those whose animals were afflicted.
In 2007, Menu recalled around 60 million packages of pet food falling under a number of its labels. They include Iams, Eukanuba and President’s Choice. Brands sold to Wal-Mart and other major pet and grocery stores were also recalled.
While the details of the settlement are yet to be announced, the Toronto Stock Exchange reported a gain of about 14 cents for the company’s stock following the announcement. That’s an 18 percent increase, bringing share value up to about 83 cents. Before the recall, Menu Foods stock was valued at $7 per share.
The recall began when contaminated wheat gluten made its way into 60 million packages of food. The gluten originated from China.

I lost 5 of my rescues in 10 days and no one could tell me why. I slept about 30 minutes a night for those 10 days and ate less. I put one down I think might have made it now that I know what it was.
I have some principle for them. They have NO principle. I am convinced they knew long before they let it out but were trying to cut their losses. My babies were showing signs in April but it would come/go and they were rescues and who knew.
I saw a littler last year and 2 of them died. I also brought 4 in (tiny babies) so they could die in peace. It was horrible and I am going out of my way to buy NOTHING they package. They knew and if they had come clean when they first discovered my babies along with a lot of others would still be alive.
Their jerk CEO was trying to dump his stock before all this came out. Sure, I believe that was a coincidence.
Yet we continue to import products from a country that continually sends us bad products.
WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE????????????????

I cook for my critters and no qualms about their food. Where this all infuriates me is that there is no regulatory agency to overlook the welfare of both the animal, or the human that cares for it (or them). Perhaps we have learned from this fiasco, but at what cost. If it costs a bit more, and was made locally okay, yet, the bottom line is, it is still crap. Maybe the the farmers of olden times had it right - table scraps of veggies and left over meat. Bottom line - if you won't feed it to your kid, don't give it to the dog either. The FDA is there for a reason. China be damned.

You put money and trust in these companies and this is what you get. Why in the hell does everything we buy come from China? What happened to made in the USA.
My baby is gone now. I feel horrible that I tried to fed him that food, I can't imagine how the people feel that lost their animals because of this. To feed your animal food that was killing them and not know. This is the worst and I truly feel the pain these families are going through! It makes me sick, just thimking about it. I will never buy another product from Menu Foods!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the company in China also needs to be held responsible for their part in this!
