Mayor Gives a ‘Cat Call’ to Find Missing Pet

Browse News

North Arlington, N.J. –- Mayor Peter Massa sent out a cat call to residents while trying to find his lost feline, “Max,” but it turns out the 14-year-old Maine Coon was hiding right in his own home.

Massa’s wife, Val, said the pet was discovered Thursday inside a five-inch hole under the stairs, though she doesn’t know he got there. After going missing for two days, Max was dehydrated and hungry but otherwise fine, Massa said.

“He's so big, we don't know how he got into this tiny hole," Mrs. Massa said of the 20-pound cat. "But once he got in he had a very hard time getting out."

Using an automated phone system, usually reserved for reaching out to residents at election time, Mayor Massa contacted about 8,500 voters in the northern New Jersey borough, alerting them of Max’s disappearance. The message described Max and offered a $500 reward.

The Mayor said a few hundred calls were received from people expressing concern over Max’s disappearance and asking if they could help. Some calls came from those whose pets have been lost.

"I'm very grateful to the community for the outpouring of support," he told The Associated Press.

Borough Administrator Peter Wall says using the automated system cost $10, and was not done using taxpayers’ money or time.

The Mayor’s house is undergoing renovations, and his wife said their pet was likely scared by construction noise.

"He probably figured it would go away if he hid," she said.

After a search by police and construction workers failed to turn up Max, the Massa’s son heard him about 5 a.m. Thursday.

"We gave him a lot of love and attention,” Mrs. Massa said. “He's getting back to the way he used to be. I'm a happy camper."

It's good to have pet people in politics because they can make more caring decisions concerning any pet laws brought to them. I'm glad whenever anyone finds their missing pet.

I agree with selena on her comment. I admit that I would do the same if I was in his shoes. We should have a lost pet alert system-in fact, we're overdue for it! Glad to hear the kitty is safe & sound!

I kind of feel like he was abusing his status by using the system since he is the only one that has access to a service like that. I think that having a cat/dog call system is a fabulous idea however. I think that for a price, with proceeds being donated to local shelter, anyone should be able to activate a lost pet notification system.

I'm glad the cat was found. It would be nice if everyone who lost a pet could use that service though. Just glad the taxpayers didn't have to pay for it.

I am wondering, did he pay himself the $500 reward? Perhaps, they could of taken that reward money and donated to their local shelter.

Glad kitty was found.

I can understand the panic at thinking your pet is missing! I'm glad everything turned out just fine. Sounds like the cat could lose a few pounds :)

I'd hide, too, if someone was doing construction in my house with a bunch of strangers making loud noises! Hopefully the mayor might take Max to work with him on days when it's going to be a bit noisy around the ole home place!

Its kinda funny that the mayor would put out a cat call for his own pet. But i'm glad the pet was found and is ok now. I liked his action and i wish we could all do that for our pets that are special to us and get lost. I think more animals would be reunited home with their love ones.

Well if I was a mayor and had an automated phone system I would most certainly have used it to get the word out that my cat was missing. So happy that Max was found--this man certainly loves his cat.

I am so glad the cat was safe & sound & unharmed except for his dehydration . I certainly hope that if another resident of North Arlington is missing a pet they won't hesitate to put a call in and have this same service implemented - for the $10.00 fee it would be well worth the peace of mind to know that everyone was on alert. As others have said - what a great idea to have in place to benefit all.

An innovative way to help find his cat, I must admit, and the fact it did NOT get charged to taxpayers or the local gov't funds - excellent.

Glad to hear the kitty was found, safe and fairly sound.

Wow - only $10. It would be great if all of us regular folks had access to something like that. I would gladly give a lot more than $10 - to call all local residents and let them know of my plight if I lost a pet.

I am glad that his cat was OK - and I am glad that he thought to use his resources. Again - I only wish that the rest of use were lucky enough to have these resources. We aren't so lucky...

Glad he got his cat back! I had one that got stuck inside our dining room wall ... just as our friend was on his way over to help us start cutting, the cat came trotting down the stairs, full of cobwebs. I STILL have no clue how he did it!

If your cat doesn't go outdoors, then it's in your house somewhere. The mayor probably spent taxpayer dollars, too. It isn't that I don't sympathize with the feelings and panic of losing a pet, but come on...he obviously didn't look hard enough.

The article said there was construction/renovations going on in the house - too easy for a kitty to slip through a door while workers are hauling supplies in/out. That's probably why they figured he may have gotten out, even if he did not normally do so.

we thought we lost a cat once. Here it crawled between the oven and the cupboard and then got underneath the cupboard drawer. I have no idea how it managed this since it is a very tight squeeze.

I've had two instances where my lost cat was right under my nose. I "lost" my cat in my first apartment when I moved in. I called my mom all upset, then heard meowing from the fridge. She had crawled under it! She always meowed when I was on the phone. I had another cat I lost when she fought with a stray outside the window screen in my house and busted through. I suspected she was under my unclosed porch so I'd leave food and water out for her with the outside door propped open. She'd come and eat the food in the middle of the night. I didn't want to leave the inside door open in case it was a raccoon or something. I'd call her every night and rattle the food bowl but she is a super shy cat. After 3 months it was getting cold outside so I finally left the door open, prepared to be awakened by all kinds of wild animals in my house. Instead I woke up to very loud purring and a very dirty cat. She's 15 years old now and has no desire to ever leave the house!

The same thing happen to me about 12 years ago when I moved to my first apartment. I had some contractors in my house working in my kitchen which they had to so some work to one of the walls so I went to work and when I returned they had put the wall in place but I couldn't find my cat Nu Nu. I started looking for him calling his name and then all of a sudden I heard a muffle cry come from the kitchen. I went to this kitchen called his name again and I heard it again so I'm looking all around and then I went to the wall and called his name and the muffled cry was coming from the wall I was in disbelief I couldn't believe that my cat was in the wall. I got a sharp object and open the wall back up and my cat was so happy to see me I don't know how that could of happen but I'm glad I was able to find him before it was to late.

I had something very similar happen, when my husband deployed I moved in with my family and in the course of the moving my things and furniture, my furry friend Mr. Hines went missing. I thought that someone had forgot to close the door when they were going in and out and that he had run away. For 3 days I looked for him, I visited all of the surrounding houses showing pictures and calling his name. I was on the phone one night with my husband who was in Afghanistan, and all of the sudden I heard the tinkle of his bell and then his cute furry face appeared. He was covered in cobwebs, and I later learned that he had been hiding in the unfinished portion of the basement. I was so thankful to have him back! We immediately closed off all access to the unfinished portions of the house.

Such a wonderful ending to what could have been so sad. How lucky this Mayor was to have access to the phone system. He must truly love his cat as most of us do our pets. My cats also become spooked when work is done. Maybe this is a hint to us all that when we have major work done in our homes to secure our pets in a room so they can't escape. I am very happy for the family and the cat it worked out so well for all.

I am so happy to hear Max was found! I would be a complete wreck if one of my pets came up missing. They seem to really love & care for Max. The Mayor really went out of his way to relocate his missing feline. Thanks to all the willing citizens that were wanting to offer their help if needed! A suggestion to the Mayor; Microchip your kitty & provide a quiet room for your Max while there is construction going on in other rooms. Give him his familiar items & food, water, litter, bed & toys. A quiet room with the door shut so he can't panic & run & hid somewhere he shouldn't be. Great story Zootoo.
