Loose Dogs Kill Cats, Attack Bystanders

December 28, 2007
FLORIDA – An Orange County, Fla. neighborhood is reeling today after a pack of dogs got loose and terrorized their town – killing three cats and attacking onlookers.
Residents say they heard the animals causing a ruckus, and by the time animal control arrived, three cats had been killed and one man was nearly mauled.
The animals' owner is out of town, and the man responsible for their care says someone must have let the dogs loose. Local authorities have not yet determined who will be held responsible. Although, behaviorists say dogs typically form packs when they're searching for food, indicating the canines were hungry when they went on their journey.
Animal services were able to collect six of the dogs. The seventh, a grey pit bull, couldn't be located.
Officials have yet to issue citations, but a dangerous dog inquiry has been launched. That means the owner, who is currently reported to be in Thailand, would have to follow strict rules in caring for the animals or have them surrendered. If surrendered, it is likely the animals could be euthanized.

shame that those cats died, many dogs are cat agressive and i personally cannot blame them for such attacks if that was the case (dogs are hunters, cats are prey size) and people should take this as a messgae to keep your cats inside, safe and secure form the MANY dangers outside.

Second some dogs have a very strong prey drive and will chase and kill any small animal that runs from it. My GSD is great with our cats and even ferrets but let a cat run across his yard and he is after it. Not sure if he would kill it (on purpose anyway) but his excitement might over ride training once he got a hold of the "prey".

Additionally, a normal group of well cared for properly trained house dogs, even if they do get out do not normally go on this type of killing spree, and also maul and attach bystanders. I would love to hear more about what they find out about the training, care and treatment of these animals.
