Loose Dogs Kill Cats, Attack Bystanders

FLORIDA – An Orange County, Fla. neighborhood is reeling today after a pack of dogs got loose and terrorized their town – killing three cats and attacking onlookers.

Residents say they heard the animals causing a ruckus, and by the time animal control arrived, three cats had been killed and one man was nearly mauled.

The animals' owner is out of town, and the man responsible for their care says someone must have let the dogs loose. Local authorities have not yet determined who will be held responsible. Although, behaviorists say dogs typically form packs when they're searching for food, indicating the canines were hungry when they went on their journey.

Animal services were able to collect six of the dogs. The seventh, a grey pit bull, couldn't be located.

Officials have yet to issue citations, but a dangerous dog inquiry has been launched. That means the owner, who is currently reported to be in Thailand, would have to follow strict rules in caring for the animals or have them surrendered. If surrendered, it is likely the animals could be euthanized.

I think the sitter of the dogs is resposible for their actions. I also think that the owner should have known these dogs could be a problem and should have had them in a kennell.

Oh those poor kitties. I would be sick if I saw a dog killing a cat. I feel sorry for thse who witnessed it. It makes me really sad...

It is so hard to find someone you can trust your pets with when your out of town. The dogs probally weren't fed and were starving. And as a pack they do what comes natural SURVIVE

OMG! What a terrible situation! The owners should have been more responsible in choosing a guardian for the dogs while he was away.

People should be as careful about who they have care for their pets as they do for who cares for their kids. It is clear that the person responsible for caring for the dogs in the owner's abscence is at fault here. Obviously the dogs were not being fed properly. And why do people let their cats outside? Keep your cats indoors where they belong and tragedies like this will not happen.

The person left in charge obviously didn't do a very good job of caring for the dogs. I'm sorry for the families of all the animals. I've seen dogs running around in a pack where I live and, I must admit, it scares me. My neice tells me all the time that she and her poodle have been confronted by loose dogs in their neighborhood. She has had to alert the authorities on more than one occasion. I think the owner needs to be held accountable.

A terrible story! Not much of a caretaker. How long will the owner be gone? Killing cats and attacking people--they need to be contained or put down. I don't think they would be adoptable now.

Something just isn't right about this story. Really sounds like the caregiver didn't even come close to taking care of these dogs. He and the owners should be held accountable.

The caregiver was the immediate responsible person. It's such a shame when humans don't do their part and the animals end up being put to sleep or another animal or person is harmed.

i have no doubt this is a case of lack of training, lack of care/food and lack of knowledge on the care givers side...

shame that those cats died, many dogs are cat agressive and i personally cannot blame them for such attacks if that was the case (dogs are hunters, cats are prey size) and people should take this as a messgae to keep your cats inside, safe and secure form the MANY dangers outside.

That's just horrible.

It is real easy to see that they were not getting the care they need if they are acting like that. The owner should be responsible.

It is obvious these animals were not properly restrained. Responsible ownership is a must. If the owner is out of town, it is still his responsibility that he has someone to look after these dogs that he can depend on. Certainly that is not the case here.

First, even when I am home my gates have locks on them and they stay locked unless I am going in or out of them. A person just never knows when so trouble maker might deice it would be funny to open the gate and let the dogs out. Too many people out that just like to do cruel things. I wouldn't want to chance my dogs getting hit by a car.
Second some dogs have a very strong prey drive and will chase and kill any small animal that runs from it. My GSD is great with our cats and even ferrets but let a cat run across his yard and he is after it. Not sure if he would kill it (on purpose anyway) but his excitement might over ride training once he got a hold of the "prey".

The excuse that someone must have left them loose is a poor one. If the owner was out of town and someone was coming by intermittantly to care for them, then the gates should have had locks on them to prevent vandalism or like.

Additionally, a normal group of well cared for properly trained house dogs, even if they do get out do not normally go on this type of killing spree, and also maul and attach bystanders. I would love to hear more about what they find out about the training, care and treatment of these animals.

i think the owner abused the dog and for the cats i think there was cats where the dog lived and they teased the dog and thats why the dog didn't like cats cause it can happen not to many dogs like cats and the man that got attacked probably reminded of his owner thats why he attacked him cause if your mean or tease a dog they don't forget! i would blame the owner for making the breed aggressive cause pitbulls can be a loving pet just like your chihuahua, beagle, and ect but there there are breeds that people use for fighting cause they need to make the money to pay for there drugs! its all an depends on how you raise, treat, and train your dog but now these days its with any breed!

The owner should take better care of his dogs.

So sad to hear that the cats were killed and someone was hurt. I think someone with this amout of pets should have them kenneled somewhere while they are gone. It sounds as though the person in charge of caring for them, may have not been doing such a good job.

When dogs get in a pack, they don't need to be hungry. When 1 chases something, the others follow suit. Wether it be a cat or another dog, or whatever. That's the natural pack instincts kicking in, from their wolf heritage. I love cats, but I am glad it was just the 3 cats & not a bunch of kids on a playground.

The owner is away, the person responsible for them at the time doesn't know how they got out! Dogs hunt in packs when they're hungry. And then the rest of the story.

That is quite a large pack of dogs. Whoever was watching them didn't call for help when he realized they were missing and on the loose. You really need to be safety conscious with a pack like that. Once again the dogs get blamed when it's irresponsible owners who need to be charged.

Hungry??? Did they eat the cats or just kill them?

Wow, how scary to have a pack like that running around. The owner didn't safegaurd the property well enough or this wouldn't have happened, I don't think they were hungry just instinct to hunt.

It sounds like these animals were starving, and preying on whatever they could to get food. Who would have seven dogs and have someone watch them? And was the person never coming home from Thailand?

These dogs were obviously not properly taken care of. Animals return to their wild behaviors if someone does not take proper care of them. I hope the responsible person is prosecuted. Thos poor cats and that poor man did not have a chance against a pack of hungry dogs.

Obviously the owner of SEVEN dogs did not have responsible care for his animals while he was away. The dogs were hungry and got out. If they had been perfectly cared for this would not have happened. Calm, loving dogs would not go crazy in a pack like that. I believe these dogs may have been wild to begin with.

I've seen my dogs try to catch a chipmonk and they weren't hungry. I think it is just hunting instincts as far as the cats go. Maybe I have mean dogs? They don't bother people, but I still watch them. I think dogs are just like some people. If they are hurting or mad about something, they can get violent. We shouldn't expect more from a dog than we do a human. People act up in so many ways. Dogs can't be perfect. That's why their humans need to use caution!

What an untrustworthy animal keeper! The owner needs to find a better place to keep his animals when he is away. Loose dogs running in packs = TROUBLE.

The owner is not going to be a happy camper. I wonder if the person responsible for looking over them had been feeding them adequately, etc. I hope they find the last dog also. It doesn't really say if the cats were strays or belonged to individuals. I do feel bad for the cats either way.

This reminds me of a situation that happened on my block when I was a kid.. A Dog came and grabbed my cat and my brother and I desperatly fought the dog off my cat... I can still see the attack and it bothers me...

that is why dogs are considered pack animals....
