List of Most Bizarre Reasons Pets are Abandoned

Browse News

NEW YORK -- If the shoe doesn't fit, take it back to the store. And if the black dog doesn't match the white sofa, well, you might as well return him, too.

That's the screwy logic some former UK pet owners have followed when surrendering their animals to shelters, Dogs Trust, a leading British dog welfare agency in England, announced Monday.

The organization released a list of the top 10 "most irresponsible reasons" people have given for abandoning their dogs.

The sofa gripe placed first; dissatisfaction that a dog "looks evil and has different colored eyes, just like David Bowie," came in second.

The list also includes complaints about dogs that didn't match the carpet, opened all the presents on Christmas eve, ate the Christmas turkey, and those that were deemed "too old."

One dog got the boot after the family's pet guinea pig became "worried" about its looming presence. Another dog received a one-way ticket to a local shelter because its owner knelt in its urine while cleaning up after it.

A Staffordshire Terrier had only its breed's reputation to fault for his owner's concern that his docile dog would turn aggressive. It, too, was deposited at a shelter.

Across the pond, it's more of the same excuses from some stickler pet owners.

New Yorkers have returned dogs and cats because they do not bark or meow, Richard Gentles, spokesman for NYC's Animal Care and Control, told Pet Pulse.

Other justifications include: the pet did not match the new furniture or decor, got caught between a wall in a house, and was "too nice" to aggressively guard the house.

One cat was surrendered after its owner found it "did not alert me when my phone rings or someone is at the door," Gentles said.

A New Jersey couple brought a pig to the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter in Brick, N.J., after it "grew," the shelter's director, Pat Wallace, told Pet Pulse.

"The pig grew to be a few hundred pounds, surprise surprise," Wallace said. "How they didn't realize that piglets grow up to be pigs, I don't know."

Another pet owner surrendered a dog that wasn't the breed the pet store had said it was, Wallace said.

Dogs Trust compiled and released the odd complaints with hope of promoting responsible dog ownership, especially during the Christmas season, when more people seek out pets as gifts for others.

"Having a dog is a long-term commitment and our anniversary offers the perfect opportunity to remind people that dogs are not fashion accessories or disposable items that can be upgraded or discarded after just a few months," Dogs Trust's Chief Executive, Clarissa Baldwin, told the Daily Express.

"Some of the reasons we hear for dogs being abandoned are truly outrageous and saddening," she continued. "The slogan 'a dog is for life, not just for Christmas' is as relevant today as it was when I created it 30 years ago."

I really think that there should be some kind of screening process you have to go through before you can get a pet or have a child!

How ridiculous is it that these people treat their pets as a disposable razor to be cast out? This article rubbed me the wrong way. Seriously, should there be a clause for idiots buying an animal. -If this applies to you, don;t bother buying me! It amazes me that people could treat an animal to be cast off into someone's care and at a shelter's expense. Hopefully, these animals will be adopted out to much better homes.

"I'm too busy." "I decided a cat isn't for me." "I can't house break him." There should be a test, not just an application, before people can adopt an animal.

If people can give up pets for these reason's then they shouldn't have gotten them in the first place. The animals are better off trying to start another life. I just wish there was a way to track people so they can't repeat their stupidity. A selfish person should never be able to get a pet.

My sister and I used to raise rabbits when we were kids. We used to sell some of them as pets but offered a return policy. We would take the rabbit back and return their money if they decided they couldn't keep the rabbit. We did this because people occasionally find domesticated rabbits that have been let loose. People didn't understand that they can't survive in the wild. This way, they wouldn't just release the rabbit if they realized that they couldn't care for the animal. We didn't have results this bad though!

I got my cat from my local animal shelter! How could someone be so selfish as to give an animal up because their fur didn't match the carpet, they can always get a new carpet!

This is just so sad. People don't realize that animals are living beings that have to be cared for and you have to take responsibility for them for life. You can't just change your mind and give your "problem" to someone else. Choosing an animal is a lifetime commitment for good or bad, except for seriously extenuating circumstances.

People never stop amazing me! Who buys an animal to match the furniture or the carpeting, knowing my lucky I would end up sitting on it and stepping on it because I didn't see it. And FYI people if your dog is eating your dinner or using your pretty new carpeting for it bathroom it's not the dogs fault for it, it's your fault for not training them!

The rationale some people use to drop their dogs off at the shelter did not surprise me at all. Too many people get pets without thinking it through.

I didn't even want to read this after seeing the headline. It is just depressing that people can be so callous to treat an animal like a possession. The reason "getting old" makes me the saddest.

I hate when people treat pets like a possession rather than the serious commitment that it is. There is no reason to ever abandon a pet.

That is horrible why would people give up there pets simply for those outragous and irresponcible reasons. It simply baffels me why someone would give up their pet, especially if it "didn't match the furniture" that would piss me off :( But kudos for shelters who were there for the worst of times for those pets in need.

It is so sad to think that people would offer such ridiculous excuses. Thank goodness they went ahead and surrendered their pets rather than subjecting pets to a life of abuse.

I'm actually a little relieved that pets get brought to shelters from people like this, they really have no business owning a pet if they think it's supposed to be some sort of decoration for their houses.

As long as pets are looked at as a comodity and not a member of the family this will happen. I'd rather have the animals returned than whatever these folks would do to get rid of them instead!

Okay this takes the cake for CRAZY: "One cat was surrendered after its owner found it "did not alert me when my phone rings or someone is at the door," Gentles said."

You just can't make that kind of thing up. That and the David Bowie eyes. I think it's probably for the best that these people don't have pets.

I have had a dog since I was 1 year old. He died when I was 15, but I had 2 others as friends dogs, and had my Reba for 10 years, and now my Bella. There is nothing like the frindship of a dog and if anyone whould think to harm dogs of other animals really bothers me. I just can't believe people would do this.
