Kula in the Classroom

Browse News

NEW YORK –- Kula’s a teacher, but her work in the classroom is a little bit different than most educators’. She has a purpose without having a purpose. Sometimes she’s there for a specific lesson and other times, she’s there -- just to be a dog.

In a rural upstate New York school, this unique four-legged middle school teacher is convinced she deserves merit pay. But she won’t get it any time soon. Her cold wet nose, four paws and tail that refuses to stop wagging during class, prevent her from earning a paycheck.

But for all she does, this 85 pound yellow lab is rewarded in something better than money. Payday comes in the form of pats on the back (and head), smiles and doggy treats.

Kula, (pronounced Cool-uh), is living the dream. Luckily she’s has never been chained to a tree or stuck in a dirty space that’s too small for her body. Instead, she visits a sixth grade classroom at South Jefferson Central School once a week to share her love and “teach” students. Over the past several years, Kula‘s visits have opened this teacher’s eyes to the possibilities of what can be learned through her example.

Unlike traditional classroom pets such as guinea pigs, hamsters and fish, the dog experience is different.

So, what’s so special about Kula in the classroom?

Maybe it stems from that notion of “man’s best friend.” Somehow, this dog’s presence encourages people to be better people; to raise the level of consciousness about how we relate to all other living things.

Kula lessons usually begin on the topic of dogs, but mysteriously get diverted to humans.

“I’ve learned that dogs are just like people,” said a young male student. “They love to eat, be lazy and have love.”

“Mrs. Kellogg brings Kula in the classroom because she thinks it teaches us something,” said a female student. “I think that thing would be that if you care for someone or something, you get love and care back.”

Raising kids’ awareness is easy with Kula’s help.

She’s a dependable friend. She visits regularly, so kids know her. They build a meaningful relationship that’s based on love, mutual respect and trust -- something that you just can’t get from a video game.

She’s accepting of everyone. Kula doesn’t care about your appearance or your IQ. Through her example, students see the essence of genuine appreciation and its role in developing meaningful relationships.

She’s uplifting. Her positive energy represents everything that’s right about the world.

She reminds everyone to lighten up and use their sense of humor. Conflict dissolves, rivalry disappears, and five-line forehead scowls fade away upon her entrance.

She’s genuine. You get what you see –- no pretense here. She’s an ace in the hole of adolescent poker.

A typical school day is full of smiles, hundreds of greetings and the clicking of toenails on tile floor.

“Kula!” is heard throughout the day as people of all ages want to get close to her. Some kiss her head, while others wrap their arms around her neck. A few politely pat her -- sometimes, they plop right down on the floor with her. As students file in, this master greeter works the crowd.

Breaking barriers comes easy for this pooch. Oblivious to personal space, Kula plops down in the middle of everything when kids work on the floor. She’ll be right there, leaning on someone or lying on her back waiting for a belly rub.

Shy she is not. A dog in every way, she is.

Drop something and she’ll inspect it. The janitors especially appreciate that she eats gobs of ABC (already-been-chewed) gum off the floor.

Even though we laugh a lot over Kula, her greatest gift to the classroom is her calming influence. Since day one, she’s been a teaching “partner.”

She’s’ an educational asset whose intrinsic value could not be predicted. What started with a few simple lessons on responsible pet-ownership has evolved into something magical. Kula became a school dog. Her presence offers opportunities for reaching kids that the class’ human teacher couldn’t do alone.

She has a sixth sense, a way of wiggling into kids’ hearts -- her wet nose always finds anyone who needs a dose of TLC.

One day, a student returned to school after attending a funeral. Kula circled the room, honed in and settled so close he could have fallen out of his seat! It was his first smile of the day. It’s inspiring to see how kids benefit from her just being herself. There’s no plan for that -- it just happens.

Throughout history, people have recognized the value of human-animal interaction. Therapy Dogs share love and compassion in hospitals and nursing homes, service Dogs are invaluable to the physically-challenged and other working dogs support police and rescue efforts around the world.

While Kula doesn’t save lives or locate lost hikers, her talents are just as beneficial. A student in her class explained it best.

“She just gives you life. Kula makes you smile even when you don’t want to smile.”

School districts should be getting articles like this because I'm sure animals aren't allowed in most of them. Yet, we keep reading articles about how valuable they are in classrooms.

I think it's a wonderful idea. Maybe if more teachers could do this animal abuse could be eliminated and people would not be so afraid of larger dogs.

This is amazing. Dogs really bring up the morale. I have worked on jobs with dogs pleasant. It really helps a bad day to pet one.

As the author of this story, I want to thank each of you for the positive, uplifting messages you have posted on Kula's story. Bringing Kula into my classroom has been, and continues to be one of the best educational decisions I've made for kids in 20 years of teaching. She provides all of us with peace of mind, a few laughs, rich and meaningful lessons and sincere love every time she visits. Your warm comments and supportive words have reminded me that this is an activity worth continuing.

If you live in our area of northern New York (Watertown), please show your support of the Jefferson County SPCA on Wednesday, 4-16 from 9:30-12:30. At that time, the Zootoo shelter make over tour will be making their inspection of the facility. The Jefferson County SPCA helps our entire community by taking in animals without homes, finding homes for abused animals and, especially, helping place the pets of soldiers who are deployed from our neighbors at Fort Drum. Let's show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the animals of our community by showing up in force on the 16th to welcome the Zootoo folks!
Thanks for your support of animals, everywhere.

This is a beautiful story and one that I wish more school would try. The unconditional love a pet can give is one of the most valuable gifts one could have. It's to bad there are some in this world that apparently have never experienced this or they could never abuse a animal.

I don't know how they do it but a dog has a way of knowing what you need before you do. They are always there with their unconditional love and they never judge. They are care givers that never ask for anything in return except a good loving home.

This is a great experince for all the students. Many people do not reall y have to chance to have a dog in the class room. Kula is an example of what should be in a class room to help out!

i agree with several people below, it's very important to teach children compassion, responsibility, and care at a young age, especially with animals. these kinds of values and morals can carry over to humankind later in life; it's win-win for everyone involved. way to go kula!

What a great way to teach kids not to abuse animals. Teach them how great they can be when you treat them right. I wish I would have had the chance to go to school with a dog. I could have been an astronaut!

Yeah The whole Big Black Dog thing could really be helped by every class room in america getting one. A trained one of course. I bet even the most shy, introverted child can go up to this dog and get a hug without feeling uncomfortable, She's worth a Million just for that fact alone. There are so many kids who just don't feel open enough to be aroung a lot of people but when they come in contact with a dog or pet its amazing to watch. Animals are so good for all of us.

I wish that dogs were allowed in more places too. But then, not every dog should be allowed such access. If your dog is well-trained, socialized and non-aggressive, then it would be great. I know that allowing dogs in general would have all kinds of dogs and their owners demanding the same treatment, regardless of how the dog is. You know what I mean? How can we get to a place where all dogs are well-trained and therefore allowed all over the place?

ooh good point, that could be a good way to get a few more black dogs adopted. often times you fall in love with a breed or a look of a dog as well as their personality. how many of us here have multiple dogs of the same breed or mix? :)

They also have programs where dogs go listen to children read. It's supposed to help them be better readers. They says it's helping to. Dogs don't judge so when children have to take their time to sound a word out the dog just listens. My clients just love when I bring my dog to work for the day. One is blind and he thinks it's the coolest thing.

This is the type of dog story that should make the evening news, not profiling something due to an irresponsible dog owner. Kudos to that school for allowing dogs in the classroom!!!

How wonderful! This is exactly the sort of classroom lesson that needs to be done throughout the country. A calming influence is so rare these days, it's good to see it happen through the presence of an animal.

Kudos!

Just another example of how therapeutic animals are! More work should be done to bring shelter animals to schools, retirement homes, pretty much anywhere the love and calming effect of an animal is warranted.

How wonderful for this classroom to have such a special friend. When I was in high school, I lived near my school. My German shepherd, Katcha, came to school with me almost every day. Most of my teachers were OK with it, so she would sleep under my desk. Since my school was all on the ground floor, she would also follow me around on the outside of the building, staying outside the window of the class I was in, on a nice day. It was wonderful having her with me all day, and she became the school's unofficial mascot. There are pictures of her in my year book.

I wish my generation could have had a chance to experience an animal such as a dog or cat in the classroom. but since we now move from class to class, that would be more difficult.
