Kitten Survives Stay in Subway Tunnel

Browse News

NEW YORK – A kitten that spent 25 days meandering through New York City’s tunnel system has been returned home.

Ashley Phillips, a 24 year-old librarian in the Bronx, says she first lost her cat while returning home from a vet visit. While waiting on the platform, little Georgia managed to slip out of her carrier.

Phillips notified Metro Transit Authority workers, who spent the next few hours with her searching the platform for the feline.

However, Georgia had slunk away too quickly.

Over the weekend, two subway workers heard that a black cat had been spotted under an east-side station. Track workers Efrain LaPorte and Mark Delassio said they found Georgia while walking through the area and making meowing sounds.

Six month-old Georgia meowed back. She had lost some weight during her adventure, but other than a scratch on her nose was no worse for the wear.

Georgia has since been returned to Phillips.

I loved the technique the workers used to "meow" so the cat would meow back and
then get to her.

I live in NY. Heard about it on the radio and in the news everywhere. Very cool story! I am so glad Georgia escaped the subway with out any harm and back to Ashley. I think it was nice that Elfrain and Mark had the heart to look for the kitten by meowing...That takes a real man with a heart to do that!!!

I guess this cat used up one of its nine lives. Maybe the owner should think about a better carrier for her cat.

I guess she must have been microchipped to have her returned. But how in the heck to does a kitten escape a carrier? Unless its a cardboard box and not a cage carrier. I am glad she is home safe.

Great ending but how do you let your cat escape the carrier? I've had cats before and used a cat carrier and i don't see how it could have gotten out.

Too many negative comments regarding the carrier, Georgia's Mommy has certainly learned her lesson. People make comments regarding taking a kitten on the NYC subway system--and yes you can--but just think of the people who take their infants on that very same system in a contraption not unlike a backpack meant for books not babies. Being from New York and using the subway system extensively that scares the hell out of me! In any event, Georgia is from the Bronx NY, she is tough and gritty and smart and hopefully none he worse for wear!

It sounds like the kitten's owner neds to read zootoo product reviews and find a better carrier. I glad the kitten survived and that the workers cared enough to rescue her.

Well, maybe the owner of that kitten should do a review on the carrier that was made in such a manner that it allows a 6 month old kitten to escape, undetected. At that age, it isn't that small to squeeze thru a tiny gap.
