Kitten Survives Stay in Subway Tunnel

Browse News

NEW YORK – A kitten that spent 25 days meandering through New York City’s tunnel system has been returned home.

Ashley Phillips, a 24 year-old librarian in the Bronx, says she first lost her cat while returning home from a vet visit. While waiting on the platform, little Georgia managed to slip out of her carrier.

Phillips notified Metro Transit Authority workers, who spent the next few hours with her searching the platform for the feline.

However, Georgia had slunk away too quickly.

Over the weekend, two subway workers heard that a black cat had been spotted under an east-side station. Track workers Efrain LaPorte and Mark Delassio said they found Georgia while walking through the area and making meowing sounds.

Six month-old Georgia meowed back. She had lost some weight during her adventure, but other than a scratch on her nose was no worse for the wear.

Georgia has since been returned to Phillips.

That is one lucky little cat ~ so many things could have happened that didn't! If I was the woman who lost the cat, I would be investing in another carrier. The one I use is escape proof, and I would recommend her finding one which is!

This is such a heartwarming story! Can you imagine what ribbing those transit workers would have gotten from their colleagues if they had not found the cat? And they searched, meowing, anyway. Good for you, guys!

Phillips is so lucky to have been reunited with little georgia after this horrific incident! I just don't understand if this sweet little kitty was in a carrier how it escaped? This is one very lucky kitty and I am so glad she is now home safe! Hopefully she has invested in a better carrier for future trips to the vet!

What a great story! Never give up on a lost Kitty. They are great survivors! I was feeding a feral mother to be cat, she had her kittens in a construction trailer one morning and left them to come eat and when she went back to feed them the trailer was gone. Two and a half days later the trailer was returned with the 4 newborns still alive. They all survived!! It's a long story but they're all alive in new homes.
