Kitten Survives Stay in Subway Tunnel

Browse News

NEW YORK – A kitten that spent 25 days meandering through New York City’s tunnel system has been returned home.

Ashley Phillips, a 24 year-old librarian in the Bronx, says she first lost her cat while returning home from a vet visit. While waiting on the platform, little Georgia managed to slip out of her carrier.

Phillips notified Metro Transit Authority workers, who spent the next few hours with her searching the platform for the feline.

However, Georgia had slunk away too quickly.

Over the weekend, two subway workers heard that a black cat had been spotted under an east-side station. Track workers Efrain LaPorte and Mark Delassio said they found Georgia while walking through the area and making meowing sounds.

Six month-old Georgia meowed back. She had lost some weight during her adventure, but other than a scratch on her nose was no worse for the wear.

Georgia has since been returned to Phillips.

Cats never cease to amaze me as to the things they can do and their natural instinct to survive in the most amazing circumstances.

That's one tough kitten to have survived such harsh conditions. And the persistence of the subway workers is to be commended. I hope Ms Phillips finds another carrier that is escape-proof for Georgia's next trip.

A friend told me about this a few days ago after hearing the story on her local news. I would have been horrified had I been the kitten's owner and probably would not have expected a good end, but miracles do happen. I hope Ms. Phillips is very careful when next she goes out with Georgia. This cat definitely has a lot of spirit.

I love the stories where the lost pet and owner are re-united. It happens so seldom--and I like happy endings. Lucky for this cat--how dangerous it must have been in that subway tunnel.

I'm glad the kitty was returned home safe and unharmed. She's lucky though, stray cats almost never get returned to their owners.

Great job workers for actually stopping to rescue a stray animal. So many people just leave strays alone and don't stop to help or take them to a shelter. I am glad her owner is reunited, I bet she was worried- good thing she notified the subway of the missing cat!!!!

What a great end to the story. I hope that her owner gets a better carrier for the cat so she cannot escape again and that Georgia's wanderlust has been quenched. I am glad that the workers helped to find the cat and that other than a scratch she was ok.

I'm glad the kitten survived and that the rats didn't get her! I wonder what kind of carrier the owner had that the kitten escaped from. Kittens certainly can slip out of things and I've had cats who have managed to escape. Carriers with zippers are pretty good. I've found cats can sometimes get the gate ones open! I'm also glad the subway workers kept an eye out and found the kitten.
