Kitten Survives Stay in Subway Tunnel

Browse News

NEW YORK – A kitten that spent 25 days meandering through New York City’s tunnel system has been returned home.

Ashley Phillips, a 24 year-old librarian in the Bronx, says she first lost her cat while returning home from a vet visit. While waiting on the platform, little Georgia managed to slip out of her carrier.

Phillips notified Metro Transit Authority workers, who spent the next few hours with her searching the platform for the feline.

However, Georgia had slunk away too quickly.

Over the weekend, two subway workers heard that a black cat had been spotted under an east-side station. Track workers Efrain LaPorte and Mark Delassio said they found Georgia while walking through the area and making meowing sounds.

Six month-old Georgia meowed back. She had lost some weight during her adventure, but other than a scratch on her nose was no worse for the wear.

Georgia has since been returned to Phillips.

It's a wonder the kitty didn't get killed by one of the trains. Glad she got her pet back, I know I would have been heart broken if this happened to me. I'm glad the subway workers didn't blow her off and helped her look for the cat.

It is great to read these stories with happy endings! Considering all the dangers in that environment, what a lucky little kitten. Maybe Booger, the hero dog from the other story, was his guardian angel!

Great ending to a story that could have otherwise had a very very very bad outcome.

I'm glad to hear a happy ending for that kitten! And those workers are angels to take the time from their regular duties to keep looking for the cat.

Two workers that must love animals as the rest of
us do or they would not have taken as much trouble
trying to get her as they did. Thank you to the
all the people that care so much for our animals
on this earth.

im glad shes back home, wouldnt have thought she would have survived. Im impressed to see how much the workers cared to search for her. to many times ive seen people just walk by a animal that needs help, but this helps me believe in the human race and that some still have a heart for animals.

You can never be to careful when traveling with pets. Maybe this is an argument in favor of the GPS system for tracking animals.

Good for the cat and the woman and her diligence in notifying the proper people and for the station workers for keeping an eye out for her. Aren't there mice down there for her to eat? Surprised she's lost weight.

A wonderful survival story. She probably was able to find food around enough to survive. It's amazine how things turn out right even after a long period of time.
