Kitten Survives Stay in Subway Tunnel

NEW YORK – A kitten that spent 25 days meandering through New York City’s tunnel system has been returned home.

Ashley Phillips, a 24 year-old librarian in the Bronx, says she first lost her cat while returning home from a vet visit. While waiting on the platform, little Georgia managed to slip out of her carrier.

Phillips notified Metro Transit Authority workers, who spent the next few hours with her searching the platform for the feline.

However, Georgia had slunk away too quickly.

Over the weekend, two subway workers heard that a black cat had been spotted under an east-side station. Track workers Efrain LaPorte and Mark Delassio said they found Georgia while walking through the area and making meowing sounds.

Six month-old Georgia meowed back. She had lost some weight during her adventure, but other than a scratch on her nose was no worse for the wear.

Georgia has since been returned to Phillips.

I am surprised that the subway workers cared that much-but it makes me happy =). She should be very thankful that she got back her cat back.

I am glad the kitten was found safe and sound. A reminder to everyone to check their carriers and make sure they are closed properly when transporting animals. I've heard of this so many times.

Yes, we all do need to check the latches, especially with older carriers that have been used a lot. They can get loose after time.

Zootoo, this is indeed one of the very best happy ending stories you have given us - it's these kind of endings that we want for all of our shelter pets - angels to help them and love at the end - Hooray!!!!

I love hearing these stories, I am so happy they found the kitten. Hopefully the owner will look into a better carrier that "Houdini" won't be able to escape. Our cat's like that you should see what we have to do to keep him from escaping, our vet laughs everytime we make an appointment. Medjai has escaped on him a few times too!

I see mice and/or rats on subway tracks in the city everyday, so I am sure the kitten had something to eat... I am glad the kitten is reunited with the owner. It's great to know that the track workers were so kind to rescue the cat.
