Kitten Survives Stay in Subway Tunnel

NEW YORK – A kitten that spent 25 days meandering through New York City’s tunnel system has been returned home.

Ashley Phillips, a 24 year-old librarian in the Bronx, says she first lost her cat while returning home from a vet visit. While waiting on the platform, little Georgia managed to slip out of her carrier.

Phillips notified Metro Transit Authority workers, who spent the next few hours with her searching the platform for the feline.

However, Georgia had slunk away too quickly.

Over the weekend, two subway workers heard that a black cat had been spotted under an east-side station. Track workers Efrain LaPorte and Mark Delassio said they found Georgia while walking through the area and making meowing sounds.

Six month-old Georgia meowed back. She had lost some weight during her adventure, but other than a scratch on her nose was no worse for the wear.

Georgia has since been returned to Phillips.

Fantastic story - If you know NYC's subways, it's a miracle that this little one is still alive. Besides the trains, rats are bigger than full grown cats down there.
I find this an incredible story with a happy ending!!!

I was just thinking to myself- I don't think I can read anymore cruel stories about animals and then I read this one. Finally a happy ending.

What a wonderful ending for Georgia and her Mom - I cannot imagine how Ashley must have felt when Georgia slipped away - all those trains, people, noise - big & scary to me I can't help but wonder what Georgia was thinking - besides "MOM - GET ME OUTTA HERE !!! I'm so glad Georgia was found safe and is back home now. I see so many people with small dogs and cats on the subway and it scares me that some don't even use a carrier or leash and just hold them in their arms. So dangerous!

Kudos to the caring and helpful subway workers. Amazing that the kitten was found and not in too bad shape. The lady needs to get a better carrier and maybe take a taxi to the vet next time.

That is 2 smart and brave workers. I can not believe they did the meow to get her to answer back.

Glad she is home and not in bad shape.

i'm so glad she survived! my cat was stuck in a sewer during a storm for about a week and when we finally found him, he was much more loving and appreciative to be home. i hope this kitty will know not to wander into anymore subways!

i just love happily ever afters! : D

Amazing that not only was the cat found in good shape, but that it was reunited with it's owner. Three cheers to the subway workers!

A happy ending and I am happy she is safe at home now. Always be very careful when going to the vet with your cats. Carriers must be in good condition and very sturdy. Make sure the door is closed and latches shut correctly. Some carrier doors have a tentency to not latch when closed.
