Kittens Found Covered in Oil, Grease

Kittens Found Covered in Oil, Grease: Discovered on a Massachusetts porch, the feline pair could be the latest victims of the summertime animal cruelty trend. The MSPCA reports cases of kitten drop-offs and animal cruelty spike during July and August.

BOSTON -- A box of kittens is not an unusual arrival at animal shelters during the summer months, infamously known as "kitten season." But on Friday, June 26, the two 3-month-old kittens which a Good Samaritan brought to the MSPCA in Boston, were not an ordinary drop-off case.

"We haven't seen something like this on a regular basis," said Brian Adams, spokesman for MSPCA-Angell. "It was told to us that he had seen them on a porch and they were covered in oil and grease, so he grabbed them and brought them over to us."

Found somewhere in Mattapan, the kittens were covered 100 percent from head-to-toe in motor oil and grease.

"It's a fairly unique form of cruelty -- if that is actually what happened to these kittens, if someone actually did this to them," Adams said.

After 10 baths in Dawn, the kittens' coats are still spotted with the residual, and possibly toxic, material. As they shed patches of fur, MSPCA-Boston is caring for the pair with daily baths.

Adams estimates it could be another week or two before Grease and Monkey, as named by the nonprofit, will be ready to go home. But there is yet one more hurdle that Grease could have to clear, as Adams is concerned her tail might need to be amputated due to injuries from the oil and grease.

As word spreads about the case, the MSPCA's Law Enforcement department requests that any witnesses come forward to help determine if their injuries were intentionally caused or may have been an accident.

"Animal cruelty occurs throughout the year, however over the past six years allegations of animal cruelty climb by about 33 percent each July and August," Peter Gollub, the MSPCA's director of law enforcement, said in a released statement.

Authorities suspect Grease and Monkey's unusual predicament could mean they are the latest victims in an animal cruelty trend.

The MSPCA's Law Enforcement officers respond to 240 allegations of animal cruelty in Massachusetts each month on average. However, in July and August that number rises to roughly 320 allegations of animal cruelty.

"There are many contributing factors to the increase in allegations of animal cruelty including a rise in outdoor temperatures, increased pet abandonment during the warmer months and the fact that people are out and about more often to witness acts of animal cruelty," Gollub said.

While authorities work to determine the origins of Grease and Monkey's injuries, the female kittens are just two of countless young felines looking for homes in the coming days and months.

"One of the things that is fortunate, when we do have cases like this, it does highlight issues that are going on in animal welfare," Adams said. "To show people, through two kittens, that we do receive thousands of kittens through the summer.

"Any day we could receive a few dozen kittens and that is not unusual, in as much as we could receive 100 in a week."

The independent organization, which is fully donor funded, receives about 28,000 animals annually, but in 2009 that number will be limited to between 17,000 to 20,000. The MSPCA is in the process of closing three of its seven adoption centers.

"In 2008, we lost about 25 percent of our endowment, a little more than 11 million," Adams said of the impact the down-turned market has had on the organization which also operates two animal hospitals, a law enforcement department and an advocacy arm.

Closing the centers, which cared for a combined total of 11,000 animals last year, were necessary for the open-admission shelter system to "stay afloat."

With the last center to close in September, Adams says they have already watched people begin to surrender their animals to their local shelters or drive to the next nearest MSPCA facility.

The remaining adoption centers are located in Boston, Centerville, Methuen and Nantucket. The three closures are coupled with the downsizing of several programs and departments at the MSPCA's Boston offices, which in full effect will eliminate 46 positions, impacting 38 people.

But Adams is hopeful about the MSPCA's future, as well as the abundant need for permanent homes of the summer's rash of kittens.

"Massachusetts has an incredible empathy for animals," he said. "There are many people who will step up and help them once they are notified about what is going on."

Contact the MSPCA's Law Enforcement department with tips on the case of Grease and Monkey, or other suspected cases of abuse in Massachusetts, at 800-628-5808.

I ask that question too everytime I hear about someone abusing an animal. The only explanation I can think of is they are not people, they're MONSTERS!

I would say it was deliberate. And probably done right near the area where they were found. I hope these two kittens have a full recovery and receive the love they so deserve.

What a sad story. It breaks my heart to know that ppl would actually do this to those poor kitties. If I ever saw someone hurting an animal I would surely report them immediately. I hope that Grease doesn't have to lose her tail b/c a cats tail is very important to them and their balance.

Absolutely! Don't ever assume your pets are safe in their neighborhood or even their own yard. One of our rescuers let her dogs out in the backyard to go potty & they were stolen within 10 minutes by bunchers. She heard one of them bark, so she was able to give chase & catch them. Hoarders, abusers, dog fighters, all sorts of people look for opportunities to pick up vulnerable animals. You have to keep an eye on your pets. And yes, spay/neuter should be a no-brainer.

This is truly heartbreaking. I did not know the Summer months were considered kitten season, but did know it seems as if everyone has a set. When I lived in Chas. SC, the vets would hold Saturday clinics dedicated to spaying/neutering cats and dogs for under $25.00. Wouldn't it be great if part of obtaining a business license mandated that vets perform X amount of time doing these procedures to keep the pet population down? They make these provisions when awarding scholarships in exchange for X amount of work time for a particular state. There has to be a solution.

Oh yeah, all of our shelters are over-filled with kittens & puppies right now. People let their pets breed & dump the unwanted litters rather than spay/neuter. We have lots of groups that offer S/N clinics some for as cheap as $1, but people still won't take advantage of it.

I don't get it. I know someone with a 10 yo Bassett that just had anothr set of pups. Evvery time she goes into season, she gets PG. It's not that they are making any money off the pups, they just never make the time to take her in to be spayed. I was SO grateful for the clinic in SC.

Miss Julee, I think there are solutions but it could be a matter of ppl caring enough to work on them and put them into effect. I have heard it was 'kitten season' and I never iknew until now about that.

I hope Grease & Monkey will do ok, especially considering that they might have to amputate Grease's tail.

There are all in them, what I want to say.
The worst thing is cruelty, in the first turn-cruelty with kids, pets, animals, which are not strong enough to protect theirself.
Some unhuman "people"have predators behaviour.
To stop them,to stop their cruelty with pets,animals-it is to prevent cruelty with kids and people.

It is truly maddening to hear of someone doing this to animals! I cannot even imagine how those people can look at themselves in the mirror or sleep at night! I hope they find whomever did this and punish them to the fullest extent of the law!

I cannot believe that we can bail out big time executives who blatantly rub it in our faces by hosting parties at a cost of 1/4 million dollars or those that go on vacation and give bonuses after we bail them out...If we can bail them out, why can't we bail out agencies like this that are constantly feeling the pressure of the failing economy? I just don't get it! These animals need help!!!! Do you hear me, Washington?

Back when I was a kid, we had a car mechanic for a neighbor who used Coke to clean his car engine. It's nice when safer products like that are used. Joy dishwashing liquid diluted in water is great to spray things to repel Box Elder bugs without hurting them, too.

I never knew that...I always like finding safer ways to do things around my pets, and even around the outside so other animals don't suffer for something I may have used....I don't think I could live with myself if I used something that injured an animal...

I saw this on T.V. a few times. Some reporters did say that the kittens MAY have gotten into trouble by themselves. If it was cruelty then this is horrendous. I will never understand that at all.

Kittens can accidently get into sooooo much trouble!
My 9 wk kittens get into alot just inside the house, including my computer wires that have been protected by coils and now a box near the bottom of my desk because the jumped on the main switch still, Maggie goes behind the monitor and pulls the mouse cord.

That is horrible. I hate that the centers are closing. I am sure the kittens will recover and find new homes since these two were rescued. It is the countless others that do not have homes that may turn feral or be put to sleep that concerns me. Our county only has a kill shelter, and although the Humane society works closely with it to adopt out as many animals as possible, too many are euthanized. It is much better than having them on the street starving to death and getting rabies though.

This is such an sad case, not only for Grease and Monkey but for the MSPCA, my own local NHSPCA has been doing all they can to take in animals for the MSPCA and find them loving homes, but with three more scheduled to close all will be hit very hard.....something has to give! But I know they will do all that is humanly possible to bring Grease and Monkey back to health, let's all pray there is no internal damage, and that Grease and Monkey find kind humans to give them a second chance for loving homes.

Well said, Sheryl! I surely hope and pray that there are no more ramifications from them being covered in all the grease and oil! Let's also pray that no more shelters close...What a sad state of affairs!

This is just a sad story all around. It is terrible that this happened to these poor kittens. Hopefully they will be OK and find good homes. It is also sad that the MSPCA is having to close shelters, which seem to be sorely needed, because of funding.

I'm really concerned about the fact that they have lost a huge amount of their funding. Not good for the poor animals that need to be taken in and cared for.

It truly is! I just don't understand why funding has to come so hard for these animal agencies when all the big execs get millions of bail out dollars from our government. That sickens me!

What another sad case. As if summer isn't hard enough with alllthe kittens being born and brought in. People have to do this, if it was on purpose. But at least as was mentioned it highlights all shelters problems, especially now with the bad economy and kitten season on us.

What will it take for people to get the the message. Spay and neuter your cats!!!!

AMEN,Bonnie!

I'm all for mandatory S/N for *all* cats, until the overpopulation crisis is over.

In my area, there are numerous cat groups, who adopt out kittens that are not fixed. We can not trust the public to do it! Sad but true!

Boy, I can't believe that. ALL the shelters and groups around here REQUIRE animals to be fixed. Our local shelter is having such a tought time they are asking people it they have an owned cat they feel they need to surrender to please wait, till the crisis is over. It is so bad for them they are offering any cat up to three years for FREE! Just fill out the paperwork etc. and it's yours!

Bonnie, it's totally nerve racking!

Some of these so called "rescue groups" do far more harm to the cats than they do good. At least the dog ppl,spay/neuter everything before adoption time and add it into the adoption fee.

It's just going to have to be mandatory for all cats/kittens everywhere until this nightmare is over.

Kittens do get into things but I think that greasy & monkey were abused. Sadly there are still far more cat haters out there than cat lovers. I see far too many cases in my area.

The article says that it's an animal cruelty case. This SPCA must have solid facts or they wouldn't breathe these words to the media. Not in this sue crazy country.

>As word spreads about the case, the MSPCA's Law Enforcement department requests that any witnesses come forward to help determine if their injuries were intentionally caused or may have been an accident.<
Taken verbatim from the article. So IMO they are unsure and are treating as an abuse case till proven otherwise.

What will it take to make our laws, much more severe?! These cruel, inhumane P.O.S~ go on to do even worse things. These kittens are lucky to be alive!

We the people need to start asking our elected officials where they stand on animal cruelty and what they are going to do to make it stop!

I too totally agree with Prevost1580.
Need more and more to use Spay/Neuter programms and to use Take/Sterilisate/Return program with feral cats too.
Only this method can to make number of the population of the cats everywhere small.Only this method working.
Some anhumane "people"with predators behaviour do not know prise of the life,of the health, they can not feel pain and sufferings of the another alive and lifes of the pets, cats or somebody another alive for them are nothing.
