Kitten Dropped, Discovered in City Mailbox

Browse News

BOSTON -- Officials said a two-pound, eight-week-old kitten was dropped in a public mailbox in Boston and later found unharmed among envelopes and packages.

According to the MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center, the kitten they're calling "Postina" likely was stuffed Friday through a small opening of the mailbox and dropped several feet below.

A U.S. Postal Service letter carrier discovered Postina on Saturday during a scheduled afternoon pick-up.

The MSPCA is offering Postina for adoption after several days of nourishment and a round of vaccinations.

Animal abandonment in Massachusetts is punishable by up to a $2,500 fine and 5 years in prison.

The MSPCA said there has been a 48 percent increase in pet owners citing financial reasons for surrendering their pets.

who could possibly think this is a good solution? animals depend on us for everything. i don't understand how someone can just abandon an animal, let alone do something like this.

A great ending to just one of many sad animal cruelty stories. They may never find the person, or persons involved. Sounds like a child would do this but then again an adult hoping thats what people would think could very well be to blame. The fines are what people may think twice about before abandoning an animal.

This poor kitty... what are people thinking? Do people not realize how cruel this is??! This kitty will possibly have "trust" issues now with humans unless it is so young hopefully it will not remember. I do hope this baby goes to a wonderful loving home.

i'm happy the kitty could breath with all the mail. Kids think they are funny and at school the other day a teacher fell down two stairs and all the students just laughed at her. Not one student offered to help her up. I don't know what is wrong with kids today or adults.

This is so sad :( Anyone who could do that to a poor kitten has some issues to work out. At least someone found it in time to rescue it.

If you think about it, the mail is usually picked up at least twice a day, by hand, from the boxes, so the kitten was pretty much guaranteed to be found. It's not like they threw it in a dumpster or down the sewer.

I never said that it was okay, or that it was the right thing to do, and I wish you wouldn't put words in my mouth, as it doesn't make for a very effective argument. I was merely pointing out that, to someone who thinks differently from you or I, leaving a kitten in a mailbox for the postman to find and rescue is not an overtly cruel act.

Again, putting a different spin on things. The "kids" did not just flush a puppy down the toilet for fun or to be cruel. If you read the article, you'd know it was a 4-year old, who was trying to wash the puppy because it was muddy. A prime example of someone who thinks a little differently actually trying to do something good, when in reality it wasn't a very good choice.

I agree that this sounds like it was probably a child prank. Parents really need to instill in their children that animals are living creatures and not toys or objects to be discarded. Unfortunately I think that there are still alot of people that are not brought up with the idea that animals deserve our respect and our compassion.

After volunteering with a humane society for four years or so, i've seen some bad circumstances, rotten people and bad events that happen to animals and some are too grisly to write about here. It's sad that someone would do such a thing to an innocent animal but we must be thankful that the kitten was found, cared for and will find a great home. From the article, it sounded like a childish prank- some child could've done it and thought it was funny then knew they'd get in trouble if they told so they didn't. Children need to be educated to respect animals.

I read this in our local paper as I live in Central , MA. I was apalled at the fact someone would do this and very relieved that Postina was found and will be okay and obviously will have a much safer and more loving home now. I wish I had room I would try to adopt her!

What is wrong with people? Is it so hard to give an animal to a shelter if you can't care for it yourself? If they thought about it, they were not only committing the crime of abandonment, but also a federal crime of tampering with the mail! Can you imagine receiving your mail with urine and feces all over it?

I'm sure with all the publicity, including pictures, she'll find a home and maybe the ones that don't get her will opt for another kitten or 2.
Maybe the news media could stretch the truth every once in a while and say a whole litter of kittens was found here or there and people would come running to adopt . . . well, I can dream can't I?
