K9s Get Bullet-Proof Vests; Other Notable Animal News Briefs

Browse News

NEW YORK -- The past couple days have been filled with interesting pet and animal news. Here is a brief overview on a couple of these stories.

Eds. Note: Answering a community's request for daily news broadcasts, Zootoo Pet News has delivered. Above is the video broadcast covering four of the most interesting animal news stories happening around the world.

K9s Get Vests

On Monday and Tuesday, a dozen bullet- and stab-proof vests were given to police K9s, thanks to the Illinois-Vest-a-Dog Program. Delivered by Lee and Xavier Harrison, the nonprofit has provided vests to more than 335 police dogs in just six years.

With each vest costing $825, the program survives on fundraisers and donations. Part of the latest delivered vests were due to a donation.

"We got an anonymous donation for the exact amount of four vests costs," Lee Harrison told ZT Pet News about part of the vest deliveries. "And they asked for those vest to be given to the Fairview Heights Police Dept."

Lee says they will keep on working until every police dog in the state has been "vested." Part of getting every police dog vested comes down to the officers themselves.

"The only thing we ask of the officers is for them to agree to a photo being taken with their dog, and for them to give us the names of K9s who don't have a vest yet," explained Lee, who established the nonprofit after a career with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service showed her the value of service dogs.

This weekend will kick off a couple fundraisers where the husband and wife team hope to raise enough money for a handful of more vests.

According to Lee, Illinois is one of 11 states with programs to provide vests for K9s. For more information, visit iVestADog.org.

A Tiger Without Stripes?

Fareeda is a 6-month-old Bengal tiger cub, who is a rarity in this world. In fact, her keepers say she is one of 20 all-white tigers, although 99 percent of tigers do have stripes.

Born Christmas Day at the Cango Wildlife Ranch near Capetown, South Africa, the young female's lack of stripes is caused by a genetic variation where she inherited two copies of the recessive gene from her parents.

A Church for All Folks, er, Species

In Austin, Texas, a new church is holding services in a bar on Sunday mornings. But the oddity doesn't end there -- about 10 dogs are also regular attendees of The City Community Church's weekly services held at La Zona Rosa, a popular music venue.

"It's not a gimmick, it's just an organic natural thing that happened," Pastor Robby Forsythe told ZT Pet News.

The non-denominational church, which opened its doors in April, choose the downtown nightclub because they wanted to "have a light footprint. We didn't want to build, so if we could rent and be a benefit to a club, then it was a win-win."

As for how the dogs came about, Forsythe explains that the church's location had "a lot of foot traffic there and we wanted to be a benefit to the city of Austin, so we decided to have a table on the curb with breakfast tacos and dog treats."

According to Forsythe, some of the interested passerbys were walking their dogs, but wanted to go inside to check out the church's bar scene, "so we let them come in."

And the rest is history as nearly a dozen dogs now attend weekly services in the Texas town, which is very pet-friendly, according to the pastor.

Model Agency Goes to the Dogs

Five-year-old Rusty just was signed to the BoHo Modeling Agency in Newcastle, England. Nothing unusual here -- except that Rusty is a Cocker Spaniel and the first canine to be signed to a human talent agency in all of northern England.

Owned by 18-year-old Rebecca Ashworth, Rusty began his life training with Rebecca's father, a K9 handler. But Rusty ended up failing his drugs dog test and just became the family pet, taking obedience and agility training. Now, his unusual coloring, and show-biz temperament, has him on the catwalk.

I agree. I would love to see a tiger without stripes. Of course, I love tigers, so I'll love the ones with stripes too! And as far as a church that allows dogs...I'd have no problem with that! Wish I could take my dogs! I think that would be an incentive for a lot of people.

The bullets proof vests for dogs should be mandatory for every dog as it is to humans. I am glad that they are making an effort to protect them all. They have a very dangerous yet important job.
The tiger with no stripes is really neat. I wonder why there isn't more of them.
I think the modeling thing for dogs is very lame because they don't know what they are doing.
Overall I think these articles were really interesting for a short read.

This is good! If the officers have vests so should the dogs...
The officers and the dogs are as one, I dont mean that in a mean why.
the K-9s are officers with two extra legs.
K-9s are the officers partners and they have to know those dogs are taken care of and safe too.
So lets help suit all K-9s up!!!

The bullet proof vests for K-9 officers should be considered an essential item. They don't send the human officer out there without one, why the dog? I have seen the Fairview Heights K-9 officers in action, and they are truly amazing. Talk about multi-tasking! As one was sniffing for drugs, it was also keeping an eye on a person it considered "suspicious", without the human officer telling it to. Glad they are now being protected. We take our dogs a lot of places, why not church? A dog on the CATWALK? Funny! Why shouldn't there be dog models? Someone has to show what the collars, clothing, hats, etc., look like on a dog.

Cathy, excellent point about the retirement package. There have been a couple of stories in the recent past about retired K-9 officers with work related injuries that are having trouble getting medical treatment because of cost. That's something the law enforcement agency should cover, in my opinion.

I think it is nice that they have a vest-a-dog program for police dogs. Thousands of police dogs each year are killed by criminals they are pursuing. These dogs sacrifice thier lives to keep our towns and cities safe. It is only fair that we try to help keep as many of them alive as possible.

You are so right, Ann! I am thrilled that they are finally fitting protection devices in for the K9's. I also think they should make some room for a retirement plan for them. It is so sad to read articles of retired K9's with medical conditions that will cost so much money but, there isn't any type of help for them. They are deserving of a retirement benefit, in my opinion.

Oh well....Good to read about police K9's getting protective vests through the Illinois-Vest-a-Dog Program--although it is too bad they have to rely on donations.

Would love to see Fareeda the all-white tiger club. She must be magnificent.

If all that it takes to get folks to go to church is to hold services in a nightclub and allow dogs to attend I say go for it.

And, YAWN Rusty a Cocker Spaniel has signed with a human talent agency. OK.

Are these really examples of the "most interesting animal news stores around the world".

All three of these stories are cool. Police dogs need the protection so hopefully more people will donate to this cause. I've heard of the rare tigers without stripes and the other rarity- the liger that Tippi Hedren took in at her sanctuary- Shambala. Tigers are wonderful and need saving- they are very nearly extinct and need help. Congrats to the cocker on the catwalk---that's a real model, if you ask me.

That's wonderful. Sounds like a " bonding" experience. I'd enjoy taking Baby into more venues.
