MODESTO, Calif. -- Modesto police officer James Murphy wasn't certain his K-9, Caesar, wouldn't seriously attack the 15-year-old boy he ordered the dog to accost. But one dog bite couldn't have compared to the impact of falling f… more ›

Good call on the officer's part. Given seconds to analyze the situation, he made the right call even if the dog did have to bite. I am glad it didn't come to that.

I absolutely agree. K9 units are completely underappreciated. How neat that this law enforcement agency worked it out with the community to use dogs in mental health situations as well as criminal situations. Perhaps other communities will take note and think outside of their box for K9 unit use.

I wonder if the teen had a pet if he would have been so low as to try to take his own life. I really think dogs, cats and other pets help folks with depression. Glad to see a death was prevented.

It does seem possible that the dog did understand the situation and worked not to hurt the boy when he grabbed him. Good job all round.

Honestly, the kid is lucky that the dog grabbed him, so the police officer could catch him. If he'd jumped off the overpass, he would have been dead, so a scratch on the leg and a chance for counseling and other mental health services is a great second chance. Caesar did an excellent job of not seriously hurting the young man, too, especially with limited work experience.

Good reasoning on the cop's part. Had the kid jumped onto the freeway he would not have only killed himself but probably killed a few others as he caused a multi car pile up.

Cool story with a happy ending. I hope that the boy gets some help. I admire police dogs but I don't like the way that they are trained. It is hard wired for dogs to protect people and not to attack them. You have to do some extreme stuff to make a dog attack someone on command.
