Japanese Companies Offer Pet Perks

JAPAN – According to Mainichi Daily News, it's becoming increasingly popular for Japanese companies to offer their employees pet perks – as a way to promote responsible care of companion animals.

Some companies provide pet dependency allowances, bonuses for adopting a rescue and grievance time if a companion animal passes away.

Pet food maker Hills Colgate of Japan gives 10,000 yen – or about $90.00 - for each pet a worker owns. They give another 10,000 if the animal dies, and a day off work for grieving.

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Kyoritsu Seiyaku and Hills Colgate say they got in early on the trend, and now hope others will follow suit.

A Kyoritsu spokesman said the company wants to bring pet care to the level of human care.

The spokesman told the Mainichi Daily News they want to “...encourage employees to have a sense of duty and responsibility whenever they buy a pet.”

In Japan, where pets were not long ago seen as less than necessary, it seems that corporate intervention is aiming to set a new precedent.

This is a wonderful idea, our girls are our children we love them, take care of them and worry about them when they are sick, just as if they were human. Just because they have 4 legs and are covered in fur does not make our feelings any less important.

I would love to see policies like this spread throughout the world. It is a win-win situation for the pet and the pet parent. This gives hope that there is a better understanding of the connection and relationship between the two. It encourages better pet care and offers understanding at a time of loss. Kudos to Japan - let's hope other businesses follow suit.

To me this sounds like a nice idea. I think that many pet lovers are more inclined to work for a company that is "pet friendly".

This seems like a good idea. Animals should have always had the same rights as humans and allowing people grieving days and money for the animals is a great perk and definatly would encourage better care.

Wow! I would have never thought that people could get days off if their animal dies. Finally, some people know that to some animals are their only family and need time to grieve. I hope that the other countries adopt what Japan has started

A very interesting concept ~ I've heard of pets in the office, but never anything like this. In many homes, our companion animals ARE our family, so it's nice to know that some companies (in Japan now, but here later) are beginning to recognize that, and to help promote responsible care.

Great idea, I am sure some workers without pets are not so keen on this but then again not all benefits from a company benefit all. But thanks for looking out for the pet owners.

A great idea if all pet owners were responsible and if people could put life before financial gain. This type of incentive program could very easily lead to neglected [or abused] pets by owners who adopted for the little extra cash for their pockets.I still believe strict punishments for animal abuse / neglect is the best method of preventing the mistreatment of animals.

How wonderful! I especially like the incentives that occur if the pet is adopted from a shelter or rescue(d). The only problem I can see is if people adopt just for the money, with no actual intention of wanting the animal outside of the financial incentive (horrible thought, but sadly a consideration in today's world).

the only real problem that I see with this policy is that giving money per animal might unintentionally promote collecting animals for the money rather than for the love of the pet. Like everything wonderful, this idea could be abused.

You know, perhaps a better way to carry this out might be, instead of extra money, vouchers for pet services and pet needs. That way, there is no financial incentive, but it helps the pets and their parents directly.

I wish they would do that in the U.S. I think a lot of people honestly want to take care of their pets properly, but lose their jobs, or don't have a high income and therefore can't. And if they were given a bonus for adopting a shelter pet, this might help with pet overpopulation as well.

These policies are so wise and enlightened. How I wish that other countries would follow. The most productive workers are the ones who feel happy and secure in their home lives. The health and well-being of pets and the ability to take time to mourn them is really a great investment in employee morale.

I like the grievance day but worry about the large amount of money when the pet dies. May make some get greedy and do something terrible.
