I haven't had a puppy in quite some time, since my last 2 furbabies (still have Kali, R.I.P. brandy-miss you, Sweetums!) were adopted from shelters as adults.

My mom "trained" my dog to beg for treats when she was babysitting. He learned that "grandma" would give him a treat when he went outside (not for actually going potty!) and he would ask to go out and then expect a treat.

Good tips, but this information should be given to people BEFORE they get their puppy so they can make an informed decision about getting a puppy. Having a pet is a commitment and people should know what they are getting into before taking the plunge.

Do we really "need" a "National Puppy Day"? Is it merely another way to encourage people to buy things they don't need (such as present for the puppy)? Do puppies "need their special day" in order to be recognized as the cute puppies they already are?

Oh,yeah--of course, if there is a "National Puppy Day", there better be a "National Kitten Day". (That would be a "need"...)
