Indictments for Companies in ’07 Pet Food Contamination

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Just six months after deadly pet food took the lives of dozens of animals across the U.S., indictments have been handed down to the companies responsible.

One indictment charges Chinese companies Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. and Suzhou Textiles, Silk, Light Industrial Products, Arts and Crafts I/E Co. The companies face 13 counts of introduction of adulterated food into interstate commerce and 13 counts of introduction of misbranded food into interstate commerce.

The third company, Chemnutra Inc. of Las Vegas, is owned by Chinese national Sally Quing Miller and her husband Stephen Miller. The pair and their business are accused of the same charges as the others and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

The U.S. Attorney’s office announced the charges, and in a prepared statement said Suzhou mislabeled more than 800 tons of melamine tainted wheat gluten to slip past government inspections.

Melamine is a protein additive that can be poisonous. The Suzhou shipment was sent to Chemnutra which distributed it to pet food manufacturers.

Court dates for the defendants have not yet been set.

I am so glad to see the justice system at work. I just wish we could impose serious financial sanctions on the Chinese companies who perpetrated the fraud that tragically killed an untold number of beloved pets throughout this country. On top of the lead paint in children's toys, I say enough is enough! Not only should every single item being imported from China undergo a higher scrutiny before it enters our borders, but every Chinese company should pay an additional fee to be allowed to do business in the U.S. until our customs and inspection teams can honestly guarantee that their products are truly safe across the board.

I'm glad to see this wasn't pushed under the rug like so many other things in this country. It also didn't take nearly as long as I thought but it will not bring back all the animals that were lost.

This was terrible and the companies that deal with foreign companies need to check out the products more thoughly. They should also have to pay the vet bills for all the animals that were killed or sickened by their food.

I'm glad they are doing something about this. When the notices first started coming out it put a big scare into my family. These companies should be held responcible and we should be more careful with what is shipped to us.

It is good to know that someone is being held accountable for this. I know quite a few people whose animals were victims. So, at least it was not brushed away as something just "affecting" animals.

So they mislabeled 800 tons of a potentially poisonous additive...guess they were trying to pull a fast one...so sorry for the animals that had to suffer and lose their lives...so glad those responsible are being held accountable!

I am glad that this is not going to be swept under the rug. Many animals were killed and many familes were hurt by this. I would hope that something like this would never happen again.

The crime here did not stop at the introduction of the poisonous product. It included the delay in getting it off the shelves and the near Scotland Yard investigation it took to find out what was safe and what was not. No one should have to go through this and no one should profit at the expense of losing a loved pet. We have become too lax in what we are allowing to enter this country - I'm not saying that we should isolate ourselves - but we should be keeping a better watch for the sake of our children and our pets.

I'm glad they continued with their investigation until they were able to figure out who was responsible. Now I hope these individuals will be faced with jail time for what they have done. So many people lost their pets over this. Just terrible.

I find this a very good thing! The parties responsible for the contaminated food should have to answer for the inattention or non-caring that caused many a pet to suffer needlessly.

Why must everything be corrupt in our society. What has happened to integrity and truth. Never mind that this was aimed at defenseless animals, these people only care about money and how much they can make. These people should be prosecuted and returned to their own country!

the owners of the companies should be given a diet of the same food that they feed our pets, maybe that way they would guarantee the quality of the food.
