Iditarod Dog Retires Champ

SECAUCUS, N.J. – The dog that led his human companion to a second Iditarod championship is home following what could have been a life ending accident during his last race.

Having won the Iditarod, Lance Mackey and his team were on the brink of completing yet another long distance race – the All Alaska Sweepstakes.

As the tem neared the finish, in the wee hours of the morning, a snowmobile appeared seemingly out of nowhere and crashed into Mackey’s sled.

Mackey said he had seen the machine approaching, and flashed a light up and down in its direction. But the snowmobiler mistook Mackey’s bobbing light -- a signal used among sled-dog racers to warn snow machines of their presence -- for another snowmobile.

Just before the recreation vehicle crashed into Mackey, he jumped from the dog sled. Unfortunately, his lead dog had suffered a shoulder injury a day before and was resting on the dog sled.

“Broke four ribs, and the bruising extends up to the spinal column and into the spinal cord,” said Dr. Kobi Johnson of The Animal Emergency Clinic in Tacoma, Wash.

The machine, which had been travelling at about 60 mph, nearly killed the mixed-breed in the collision. And although Mackey and the rest of his team were ok, Zorro couldn’t walk.

Doctors gave him a 50-50 chance of ever walking again.

The next day, Mackey said his dog appeared to have lost his will.

“He looked lifeless,” he said. “His head was out the kennel. His tongue was on the floor. He appeared lifeless.”

But less than a week after the accident, Zorro walked out of the kennel.

“You’re looking good,” Mackey said, astonished by his champion dog’s recovery. “You’re looking good. I told you I wasn’t going to leave you. I told you I wasn’t going to leave you.”

The dog’s tail has been wagging ever since – an indication that his spine was not damaged. However, he will never be able to pull a dog sled again.

“I don’t think he’s going to take it too hard,” said Mackey. “His job is basically going to be to father more dogs.”

According to Zorro’s doctors, he should be back to his old self in a few months. He and his owner headed to Nome, Alaska. last Friday, finally home for good.

I'm sure that accident was a very scary event for everyone. I'm glad they all survived and hope the future is bright for Zorro.

How sad, atleast he is now retired. Will that include a pension:)

I'm glad he'll pull through!

Take one accident in a race with absolutely wonderful historic roots (vaccine), mix it with one irresponsible dude on a snowmobile, mix lightly and wah-la: you get 114 comments in varying degrees of knowledge. Rather than ban the race or snowmobiles in the vicinity of the race (ever been to that part of Alaska? Like sled dogs and bush planes, snowmobiles are a fact of life), why not consider that few would realistically suggest banning school buses because a scant few schoolbus drivers have run into/over children. Debate endlessly over such things, but how much could be being done at our shelters for the animals while debates siphon off time and energy.

Zorro sounds like a real survivor. Very happy he will be OK. As for the snowmobiler, what an idiot. Hope he got the punishment he deserves.

Wonder how the dog is going to take retirement. Most sled dogs still do some pulling after they are quote un quote retired. It's what they love to do and it's kind of sad that they don't get to continue doing it. Sled dogs can't wait to be harnessed up it's what they live for. It's their fun. It's like a border collie that can't herd. It's in their blood.

So happy to hear that Zorro will make a full recovery AND that his racing days are over. I will say that Mackey seemns to really love his dog. I understand why some people are upset that Zorro will become a stud and will therefore sire more mixed breed puppies. We have to understand that Mackey is hoping for another champion, and while most of us know that there are many other lonely "champions" out there sitting in a shelter waiting for a home, he probably believes that there is something special in Zorro's genes....men are silly that way.

He is and will always be a winner...I love this story.

To some people...You are so wrong...This a a race that only the "true" dog lovers can do. The people that race in the big races in Alaska don't do it for the $$$ they do it for the love of dogs, history, outdoors, and life.

I'm very happy to hear the poor doggy is well now, but I think the Iditarod should be banned. I'm sure some dogs love it, but I've heard too many horror stories...just like greyhound racing (which should be banned too).

Happy to hear that the dog will live a good retired life.

I'm really glad the dog is going to be okay. The moran that hit them sounds to be really stupid. Just because he thought it was another snowmobile doesn't give him the right to ram it. If he didn't know what the flashing light meant he should not have been out there. The article doesn't say what happened to him.

I'm very happy that the dog is going to be alright. I'm not happy to hear about his new purpose though. The owner wants to use his mixed-breed dog to father more puppies. Aren't there enough mixed-breed dogs in shelters and rescues already? And I doubt that he's going to keep every single puppy produced... so where are they going to go?

Good news that he will be OK, but what was a snowmobile doing in a dog sled race area anyway?

Snowmobilers shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the races. Glad Zorro is going to be okay, but I don't like this sport. Too many dogs are injured or killed.

Sorry Kelly, but it is you who are wrong. Almost 140 dogs have died during during the history of this race and about half the dogs that begin the race can't finish due to injury. The race isn't even representative of history because the original run was done in relays where no dog had to run more than 92 miles. It violates the laws of animal cruelty almost everywhere else in America. I would love to know what kind of "true dog lover" would put their pet through that.

I don't understand how the snowmobile mistook a flashing light for something else - and still plowed into it. Whatever you think it was coming at you - why would you plow into it? That guy is an idiot.

Maybe more education where snowmobile riders are concerned would be a good idea. I am very happy this dog and owner will be ok. It is a great thing that the owner is going to retire the dog and still keep him around as a faithful friend and pet.

I am so glad that Zorro is okay and will make a recovery and that no one else was seriously injured - as horrible as this accident was it certainly could have been even more tragic...
KNOM news carried the story and here was an interesting part:
Meanwhile, the snowmobile driver who hit Mackey's sled dog has come forward.

Mackey put out a plea Saturday in Nome for the driver to identify himself, and that happened Sunday, he said.

Mackey declined to name the individual but said the person was "absolutely devastated by what happened," the musher told Nome radio station KNOM.

Mackey said he expects the person to make reparations. He also said alcohol was involved.

I am so happy the dog ended up ok, so sad that he was hurt though. Usually dogs that do that enjoy it, poor dog. Wonder if the moron on the snowmobile has been drinking or something? Sad.
