Okla. Humane Society Rewards for Animal Fighting Tips

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahomans were presented with a reward this week to be proactive in ways which could save animals’ lives.

The Humane Society of the United States today offered to pay up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any cockfighter or dogfighter.

The announcement was made Monday at the state capitol. Cynthia Armstrong, state director of The Humane Society, said cockfighting and dog fighting are bad for the neighborhoods where they occur.

Former NFL player LeShon Johnson was convicted in Oklahoma of illegal dogfighting after he was caught during a 2006 raid in which 141 dogs were seized.

Cockfighting didn’t become illegal in the state until 2002 -- and was narrowly outlawed 56 percent to 44 percent. The blood sport’s long history there had long been challenged, but today the HSUS took yet another step to seal its fate, along with that of dogfighting, as forever banned in Oklahoma.

Attorney General Drew Edmondson said the sports are symptoms of other crime, including drug activity, gambling and illegal weapons.

Dogfighting was outlawed in the state in 1982. Both activities are felonies.

Good deal.

Great that they are finally doing something about dogfighting! I cannot believe that some people enjoy watching dogs hurt or kill each other.

Good for Oklahoma, hope other states follow.

Go HSUS!! This is great and Kudos to the HSUS for stepping up but it's sad to think people need a "bribe" to give tips on people who are dogfighting..

That's a great idea! I'd do the same. Dogfighters are sick people who need to be stopped.

this will bring in more info, but people should call the humane society or police even if there is no reward.

i bet this will help turn people in to the cops... =)

I mean, I don't think that people should be rewarded for doing the right thing. But, in today's society, people don't do the right thing anymore!

good for HSUS. i think it's too darn bad that we must offer a huge money incentive to people to do the right thing. this is obviously a bad thing, it's not as if it COULD be seen as OK or bad, it's just plain wrong.

I think it is great that they are trying to stop dog fighting. Dog fighting is disgusting. ruthless an inhumane. Anyone who participates in or supports dog fighting in any way is a piece of you know what. I think they need to question the people who provide them with the tips that lead to the arrest. How do they know that these people are innocent? Maybe they know about the dog fighting ring because they were/are involved? Before they hand out the cash they need to make sure the people providing the information are not involved themselves.

Good anything to stop this. It is ruthless. If they want violence throw them in a pen and let them fight to the death. This has got to be stopped.

dog fighting is wrong. they should put them people in the dog ring and let them see how that feels like to get their body bitten all over, shedding blood, pulling hair. oh yeah how about being abanded for not winning the fight to die slowly and alone. this dog fighting needs to banned. pets do feel pains I agreed with one of the person here commented that dogs do feel pains. that right I'll say it along with them, GIVE ME A BREAK!

Hopefully the offering of rewards will help, but I'm sure it won't stop dogfighting completely. I am surprised to read that cockfighting was legal until 2002--that's just a horrific as dogfighting. Hopefully the Michael Vick case made some sort of an impact.

I hope offering a reward helps, but think how much better it would be if money would not have to be offered to do the right and humane thing thing.

Money talks. If it takes money to get people to report any kind of animal cruelty, bring the money on.

i just hope they follow through on convictions, since more often than not, animal cruelty convictions have light punishments if any.

The proactive stance is great! Now if the reward could only be donated back to the care of the animals being seized in the blood letting busts. Community service involving the animals should also be required to all who attend and are rounded up at the bust. This is a sad example of what society has been willing to allow. These fights are cruel, as well as the training and care of the animals that are used for the so called 'sport'.

People should come forward and complain or report cruely because it is the right thing to do...we could use more of that behavior.

People should have courage and instinct to come forward and report these horrible "sports" so they can be shut down....instead on complaining about insignificant matters that are mere kife inconvenieces, these important instances of cruelty will benefit us all as a society only if stopped!

i think this is better than how the other states just cracked down on the law. this will give people to give up information more on dog and cock fights than just enforcing a law. because enforcing a law does not mean you will find out information on what is going on

Unfortunate that the Humane Society or any organization has to bribe the public for information. I hope the true animal lovers will do it without regard to the cash

I think offering a reward for information is an awesome idea. I hope it helps to catch some of these monsters.

Any kind of animal fighting should be against the law. And the punishment needs to be harsh.

This is such a hideous crime, it kills me to know that humans can treat animals this way and this article was correct in saying that this type of crime usually stems from other crimes such as drugs......if they can treat animals this way , who is to say how they treat other humans. Good job!!!

Its Michael Vick all over again at least its been stopped

This needs to become a law everywhere!

I agree!!!

It's hard to believe that cockfighting was legal in OK up until 6 yrs ago and dogfightings only been illegal for 26 yrs, but at least steps are being taken now to advocate against dogfighting!

Your right it is good that steps have been taken.

I'm glad that a stigma is being attached to dogfighting and cockfighting these days. People look down on you for it now, as they should. It's sad that people need money as an incentive, but this just helps us down the path of completely eliminating blood sports.

Oh , how about when they make up excuses like. "the dogs don't feel pain" I actually heard some punk on Animal Precinct say that! COme on who's that stupid. Or the , its a Geographical/ethnic thing. That people are raised that its okay and don't know any better. Give me a break, anyone with a little brain cells knows the animals feel pain and that its illegal in this country. Whoopi Goldberg was actually defending that football player saying that the part of the country he's from (the south) its prevelant and so he thought it was okay!!! Please he's a dumb jock but he's not that dumb.
