Hot Cruisers Kill More K9s Than Stray Bullets

Browse News

MIAMI -- Two police K9 Unit dogs' lives were recently lost in the line of duty in Florida. Their untimely deaths didn't come from being caught in a crossfire, but rather from overheating while they waited in patrol cars.

They aren't alone. More Florida police dogs have died in overheated cruisers than from gunfire this year.

"It's tragic," Sgt. Timothy Houser, of the Miami Beach K9 Unit, said of the two dogs' deaths.

Eight-year-old Hieke, a wire-haired terrier and Labrador mix, died after being left for two hours in a blazing police car.

Another dog, Sam Diesel, died in a similar manner in July.

While Hieke's cruiser was outfitted with a heat-sensing system, authorities in Coral Springs, Fla., say the dog's handler forgot to leave the engine running, which prevented the system from working.

Authorities in Coral Springs, Fla., say her handler will not be charged because it was an accident.

The "Hot-N-Pop" heat-alarm system is routinely set to a threshold temperature of 85 degrees, and will alert officers when the heat reaches a level unsafe for the dogs.

If the temperature exceeds that, the system sends the cruiser into "full alert mode."

First, the back windows of the squad car open and a fan starts blowing outside air into the car. Then the car's alarm system goes off and the emergency lights start flashing to warn officers that the dog is in danger.

The latest edition of the alert system comes with a remote pager that fits on the officer's gun belt. The pager will vibrate if the temperature in the car gets too hot.

"The technology keeps getting better throughout the years, like all technology," Sgt. Houser said.

Still, technological advancements can't always step in for human action.

"(One of our officers) left the car to do paperwork inside and the alarm went off and when he noticed the alarm, he ran out to his car and it was hot inside the car, but luckily enough the equipment, that was installed in there, worked perfectly," Sgt. Houser said.

According to news reports, a heat-sensing system was on order for the patrol car where Sam Diesel died in July.

Authorities in Mulberry, Fla., say the car's air conditioner failed, bringing the German Shepherd's life to a horrific end.

"I hate to hear it," Sgt. Houser said. I have to almost turn off on the TV when I see it on the news. I hate to hear it because, I mean, the technology is out there."

While all cruisers in the Miami Beach K9 Unit are already equipped with the "Hot-N-Pop" system, the technology is common but not mandatory in Florida.

With a system costing less than $1,000, and in a region where the average high temperature throughout the year hovers around 80 degrees, it's affordable technology to protect a priceless investment.

Any officer should know better than to leave a dog in a car, regardless of the temp, while he runs inside to do paperwork or whatever. That's just asking for disaster. They should treat the animal as if it were a child and ask themselves if that is what they would do in that situation. These officers should have the K-9 priviledge taken away from them

That is so sad that those dogs lives ended like that. The officers should not be allowed to have another dog if they forget about them. I have seen a local officer just leave his car running and not check on it for a couple hours. I think they should have to check on the dog like every 15 minutes. With any kind of technology, you never know if it will fail.

You think people would have more common sense. If these officers are going to work with the dogs they should be more trained with them or something so that this doesn't happen. Those dogs cost thousands of dollars to train and it's really a waste when one dies of forgetfulness. I think this heat sensing system should be mandatory everywhere with police dogs.

This is so sad. Everyone in Florida knows not to leave their pets in a hot car. They should be required to take their dogs out while they are in the AIR CONDITIONED police station!

Aren't these officers trained? I thought every animal owner knew not to leave their dogs/cats in hot cars. Maybe some additional training is needed, or leave the officers in a hot car.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but it was my understanding that if a K-9 is killed by a criminal in the line of duty, the criminal can be charged with the equivalent of the murder of a (human) police officer. If that is the case, then shouldn't K-9s be temporarily removed until all of the cruisers are outfitted with this device. That way, careless deputies would not be subject to prosecution under criminal negligence, at a minimum. Theoretically, the pendulum could swing both ways.

I hate this....

In our department the dogs are not allowed in the main building. You cannot leave the windows down because not all cars have bars on the back windows and the dogs will come out the windows after people.

This is a tragic set of events. Dogs should NEVER be left in a vehicle unattended.

i guess i can see why they wouldn't be allowed inside, but that's almost unfair that the dogs, that are as much a part of the team as any human, aren't allowed in the buildings. poor things, it's just a recipe for disaster.

It is NOT fair. I'm glad my office is not in the main building. When the K9 officers must report to the main office for some reason, they will bring their dogs to me. I "babysit" until they go on patrol. If they were to leave their dogs at home it would mean an hour response time (or more) before being able to respond to any call.

I have to agree with the last person. The dogs should not be left in the cars. They should be treated like assist dogs for handicap people. The alarms systems are nice. There isn't any reason why a dog should die in a car. I am sure the owners feel horrible and I feel bad for them. Hopefully this will be a lesson learned.

I agree that it is negligence that caused the deaths of these police dogs. It would be more understandable though if the officers were working in high stakes missions, rather than just forgetting to leave the car running.

what a good idea but very upsetting poor sam and the others that work to protect us is so sad. I myself do not take my girls out in the heat. That is so neglect to me. These are beautiful dogs and I know a lot of officers do treat there companion like one of the families and some dont care to much

This is so terrible. The people that are supposed to protect and serve our community can't even protect their own companion animals. There is a huge problem there. I get that Florida is hot, but that is just neglect. It's hot here in Arizona I havn't heard any stories like that here. The K9 units need to be more educated

This is unacceptable...the Officers that are assigned a K9 are assigned a partner. They need to be better educated and if they "forget" and this happens then they should be put in a car in AZ and left there for 10 hours with the windows up!

I agree with Lorie, though it is beyond me how you forgot a child or a pet in a hot car. Why can't the police officers take they dogs with them? Aren't they trained? Especially living in miami they should know better. Two hours left in a car by themselves is way too long, whether the car is running or not.

This seems to be an issue not only for animals but children too. That alarm seems like a great thing but it should be available to everyone with kids and should be automatically turned on with movement/noise in the car. Maybe the movement sensory would have saved this dog and may also save others in the future. This technology should also be available in mini vans which are usually used by parents of small children. This should be studied further.

So, are the officers treated as negligent as a person causing the unintentional death of a child in a hot car? They should be. Mulberry is only about 35 minutes from where I live and when I think of this abuse, I want to go and prosecute the asshole who let the dog die. I don't even take my dogs out in the heat of the day here in Florida as they stress so easily. Canine partners wear their vests at all times. Think of it, an on duty officer left in a car to die by his partner, who was very loyal to and would give up his/her life for, only to die due to HIS HUMAN partners negligence! Lock'em Dano!

Sadly everyone forgets things--this time there was a terrible consequence. I think they now should realize that even with a hight tech "solution" there can be horric errors and should seek a less "tech" way to safeguard our K9 cops by taking them with them at all times.

This is a tragic story and being a police officer myself I would hope that they would not let the dog's handler continue to be a k-9 officer. You can't always rely on the equipment to warn you that the car is too hot.

WOW. For all you people out there that actually think it was an accident you have got to be dumb I'm sorry but you don't just leave a poor dog in a car for 2 to more hours and not remember they were riding in the car with the dog they must have got out the car and told him to wait or something you don't do that that is wrong and that's why police are stupid but get away with everything.

Yes, it is tragic - BUT even more so it is appalling!
And why for this police officer is this "an accident"? - It is not an accident - it is the responisibilty of the owner or the handler to be sure that their pet is safe at all times! For God's sake - it's Florida - I may live in New England but I sure know that in Florida it is hot - I think if I lived and worked there I would know better than this. Tragedy, yes! Inhumane & Unconscionable, Definitely yes!

That system should be an option on all cars. It could save the lives of a lot of dogs and children. They need to make a version that runs on the battery, though. Most people do not leave the engine running.

I also agree that these K9's were not treated as they should be. I work for a police department and know some K9 officers, and they look at their dogs as not only a fellow officer, but as a family member. These officers must not feel the same way. If you wouldn't leave your child in a car that hot for that long, why would you leave your dog? They should feel ashamed and be punished.

I should add that my Belgain Malinois was in the air force and could take down an armed terrorist yet she loves kids and plays with them gently and happily! She is totally safe in public and just acts like a happy goofball to everyone--especially children (she adores them!). However, should I get threatened or attacked or her own life is threatend she will revert back into her trained Military Working Dog self. She is uncanny in knowing what someones's body language really is saying--even if you pretend to "get me" she knows its a silly game. Only once did she growl and it was warrented at the time.

As K-9 officers they should know better then to leave a dog in a hot car, especially in Florida. This should be part of their training. I know in our neck of the woods (where it doesn't get nearly as hot as Floriday does) whenever the K-9 officers come out and do any sort of demonstration, they leave their cars on running with ac on so the dogs don't over heat. In my book it's common sense. The numerous officers that did this should be punished. If they did it to a human they most likely wouldn't get away with it. What a shame and horrible way for any animal or human to die.

It's awful that the officers aren't charged but what is more dangerous? Keeping the dog inside the car or letting it run loose and possibly attacking innocent people along the streets?

I beg to differ as I certainly don't see a trained police dog running wild and attacking people on the streets - what happened here is obviously worse than allowing these poor dogs to be outside the vehicle - these officers took a life - I personally think they should be held responsible and charges filed against them as they would be for any common folk that left their dog to die in a car from heat stroke.

My Belgain Malinois was in the air force and could take down an armed terrorist yet she loves kids and plays with them gently and happily! They deserve the same treatment of the human officers and go with them whenever outside the vehicle. If it is too hot to even be outside the car then just imagine being in the hot car and the AC not working--a horrible way to die.
