Hot Cruisers Kill More K9s Than Stray Bullets

Browse News

MIAMI -- Two police K9 Unit dogs' lives were recently lost in the line of duty in Florida. Their untimely deaths didn't come from being caught in a crossfire, but rather from overheating while they waited in patrol cars.

They aren't alone. More Florida police dogs have died in overheated cruisers than from gunfire this year.

"It's tragic," Sgt. Timothy Houser, of the Miami Beach K9 Unit, said of the two dogs' deaths.

Eight-year-old Hieke, a wire-haired terrier and Labrador mix, died after being left for two hours in a blazing police car.

Another dog, Sam Diesel, died in a similar manner in July.

While Hieke's cruiser was outfitted with a heat-sensing system, authorities in Coral Springs, Fla., say the dog's handler forgot to leave the engine running, which prevented the system from working.

Authorities in Coral Springs, Fla., say her handler will not be charged because it was an accident.

The "Hot-N-Pop" heat-alarm system is routinely set to a threshold temperature of 85 degrees, and will alert officers when the heat reaches a level unsafe for the dogs.

If the temperature exceeds that, the system sends the cruiser into "full alert mode."

First, the back windows of the squad car open and a fan starts blowing outside air into the car. Then the car's alarm system goes off and the emergency lights start flashing to warn officers that the dog is in danger.

The latest edition of the alert system comes with a remote pager that fits on the officer's gun belt. The pager will vibrate if the temperature in the car gets too hot.

"The technology keeps getting better throughout the years, like all technology," Sgt. Houser said.

Still, technological advancements can't always step in for human action.

"(One of our officers) left the car to do paperwork inside and the alarm went off and when he noticed the alarm, he ran out to his car and it was hot inside the car, but luckily enough the equipment, that was installed in there, worked perfectly," Sgt. Houser said.

According to news reports, a heat-sensing system was on order for the patrol car where Sam Diesel died in July.

Authorities in Mulberry, Fla., say the car's air conditioner failed, bringing the German Shepherd's life to a horrific end.

"I hate to hear it," Sgt. Houser said. I have to almost turn off on the TV when I see it on the news. I hate to hear it because, I mean, the technology is out there."

While all cruisers in the Miami Beach K9 Unit are already equipped with the "Hot-N-Pop" system, the technology is common but not mandatory in Florida.

With a system costing less than $1,000, and in a region where the average high temperature throughout the year hovers around 80 degrees, it's affordable technology to protect a priceless investment.

Guess what? They are going to have to do something about these K-9 dogs dieing in overheated police cars. I think the policemen that cause this to happen should be charged with animal abuse and not be able to participate in the K-9 program in the future.

these dogs need better working conditions, it's a shame to loose such a well trained loyal animal in that manner. It's horrible.

It sounds like both officers did know better and they thought they had protection systems in place. I'm sure both officers were devastated. Unfortunately, police officers can get very very busy and they have to rely on such devices as described in the story to protect their dogs when they are away, but sometimes those devices fail (whether it be human error or mechanical).

Even if the officers knew better, the fact of the matter is, BECAUSE they didn't leave the engine running, the system didn't turn on which in turn led to the animals' death. The other officer whose system mechanically failed, I can see how they wouldn't hold him responsible as they assumed the animal was safe due to this amazing system. Human error is no excuse. I'm not saying they should have been put behind bars but they should be made to pay for their wrong doings to some degree. If it were anyone other than a police officer, they'd at least get a freaking fine out of it. Now when someone's pet dies by overheating in a car, they're going to think they can just get away with it and that's no example to be setting. Hopefull all police cars eventually become equipped with this and these 'accidents' don't happen again.

This is an informative article and brought to my attention another great technology that I was totally unaware of. It’s tragic that another K9 died from being in a “hot” car, and hopefully news articles like this one will raise awareness and help get more police cars equipped so that there are safety devices to prevent such tragedies.

You should read the story closer, in both instances, protection devices were installed to keep those dogs safe. Yes, one officer made a mistake, but I'm sure he did not intend to and the other officer's system mechanically failed. These were tragic accidents and these officers are probably great men who can do more great work with new dogs.

How in the world are these officers just given a reprimand? If a citizen left their dog in the car, the dog would be picked up by animal control and the person would be fined. That is if the dog survived. If it didn't, the owner would be a whole lot more trouble than the officers were. When I see a dog left in a car in this Florida heat, I call the police. Who do you call if you see a K-9 left in a car? They were saying that the average temp in FL is 80 degrees, but the car temp is well into 100's. That is absolutely neglect!! I don't think these officers deserve another K-9 partner.

This equipment should be manditory for use anywhere there is a K9 unit, especially in hot climates. These dogs are assets to the police force. They also are a huge investment for the police force. It is hard to comprehend that the dogs might be left in an overheating car, even if it was an accident. I cant imagine how upsetting this tragic event must have been for the force. Hopefully it will turn into a positive by rasing awareness among officers working with K9's.

I have often seen K-9 officers left in cars and been appalled that officers are allowed to do this. I didn't know about the alarm sensors, but they obviously don't work if they are not used. This should be mandatory - especially in a climate as hot as Florida. Pet owners are fined and seriously reprimanded for doing this to their pets. These police dogs are highly trained and extremely valuable. It is truly shocking to see this kind of report.

I agree They should have to take the dogs in when doing their paperwork. These dogs are as much as part of the dept. as the handlers. I would think that this would be a perfect time to feed and water them.

Accident? If the partner had been a human, he would have taken him into the building with him, wouldn't he? There is no excuse, the dog is doing a humans job and should be treated with the same dignity and respect. At the very least the windows should have been rolled down.

How on earth do you "forget" that you left your partner in a blazing hot car!! I don't care if it was an "accident," the officer should still be charged. If a human had perished in such a way, the person who was so forgetful would still be charged, even if it was an accident!

what kind of a moron leaves any animal - nevermind an animal that literally thousands of hours of training have gone into - in a hot car long enough for the animal to overheat and die. a suspect can be charge with assault on an officer for injuring a K9, but their fellow officers can leave them in the car to die?

That's just insane that it's not mandatory to have these cooling systems on the officers' cars! Especially when K9 dogs are so crucial to the police force anymore. Besides that, a life is a life, wether it's a dog or a human.

I don't understand how the officers could have let this happen. Aren't these officers suppose to have special training with animals, aren't these animals suppose to be their partners? Why don't they take the alarms out of the cars, and just make it so that where ever the officer goes the dog goes too? It shouldn't be a problem, these dogs are suppose to be very well trained. I don't think the officers should get off the hook, if it happened to any other person people would be screaming animal abuse.

Here is an article that we like to use at our shelter to show how hot cars get.

Woman Bakes Cookies on Dashboard

June 11, 2008 by Kayla

In Bedford, New Hampshire, it’s hot, but for one woman (and her co-workers), that’s not always a bad thing! In her small SUV, the smell of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies lingers in the toasty air. They’re almost done. These cookies sit atop the dashboard of Sandi Fontaine’s Rav4 and when the days get hot, she get’s to baking!

“My husband wanted me to run some errands this morning,” said Fontaine. “I said, ‘I can’t. I’m baking cookies.’”

Over three years ago, Fontaine first tried out her car-cookie baking idea. She soon learned that the temperature outside needed to be at least 95 degrees which causes the temperature in the car to rise to a blistering 200 degrees.
bakingcookies.jpg

When the temperature begins to rise, so do the cookies! “Mrs. Fields has nothing on Sandi,” co-worker Brian Champigny said of the cookie coinsurer. The deliciously warm cookies are a great addition to any work day, and with all the talk of energy conservation, what better way than to use solar energy.

When Fontaine’s cookies were finally ready to come out, she headed back outside from her work. “When you open the door to that car,” she said, “it’s like, oh, my God. It’s a wonderful smell.”

This just goes to show you that cookies really are right anytime. It further supports the idea that when life gives you sweltering heat, make chocolate chip cookies!

This is awful and I would never in a million years have thought that police officers were not aware of the dangers of a hot car. It should be drilled into every officer working with canines that you never ever leave a dog in car that has the potential to get hot. That same rule applies from southern to northern states. Actually leaving a dog in a car in warm weather is negligent as well as cruel. Please educate all officers to the dangers of hot cars and how quickly they can kill.

I don't understand how this happens. There are systems in cars and I'm sorry she "forgot" to leave the car running. You go through extra training to become a K9 cop. Also I don't know if it is the same in Florida as it is in MA but in MA not only is that dog your partner at work but that dog goes home with you every day and lives with you. The dog also becomes like a family pet. How do you allow this to happen. The worst thing is if a cop say an animal in a car on a hot day with the windows closed they would do something about it but because they did it, nothing happens.

Thats awful! I understand they have a lot of responsibilities and everything but they cant even properly take care of their own partners! Thats pathetic. If they cant even take the time to do that or the consideration to, how do we know they're thoughtful enough to take care of anything else? If they're that careless they shouldnt have those animals in the first place.

I am sick hearing this. Where I live you can get your kids taken away from you if you leave them in the car to go in and pay for gas. If they can do that to protect kids why dont they apply that to their partners

I can't even begin to understand how this could happen. I thought police dogs accompanied the officers when they left their cars. I thought windows were always left opened at a routine traffic stop. If something went wrong the dog could get out of the car to help his partner.

Sounds like the system would be well worth the "less than $1,000' it costs to have one.

It is hard for me to believe that they would need to be left alone that long. It seems the officers could bring them with them if they are planning on doing paperwork or anything more than a few minutes. And the system would be a great back up...

This is so sad. That is a horrible way to die. If the police are able to keep the dogs in their car then it should be mandatory to have these systems installed in the cars as well. I also think that it should be mandatory that they check on them every 15-20 minutes. The poor dogs.
