Hot Cruisers Kill More K9s Than Stray Bullets

Browse News

MIAMI -- Two police K9 Unit dogs' lives were recently lost in the line of duty in Florida. Their untimely deaths didn't come from being caught in a crossfire, but rather from overheating while they waited in patrol cars.

They aren't alone. More Florida police dogs have died in overheated cruisers than from gunfire this year.

"It's tragic," Sgt. Timothy Houser, of the Miami Beach K9 Unit, said of the two dogs' deaths.

Eight-year-old Hieke, a wire-haired terrier and Labrador mix, died after being left for two hours in a blazing police car.

Another dog, Sam Diesel, died in a similar manner in July.

While Hieke's cruiser was outfitted with a heat-sensing system, authorities in Coral Springs, Fla., say the dog's handler forgot to leave the engine running, which prevented the system from working.

Authorities in Coral Springs, Fla., say her handler will not be charged because it was an accident.

The "Hot-N-Pop" heat-alarm system is routinely set to a threshold temperature of 85 degrees, and will alert officers when the heat reaches a level unsafe for the dogs.

If the temperature exceeds that, the system sends the cruiser into "full alert mode."

First, the back windows of the squad car open and a fan starts blowing outside air into the car. Then the car's alarm system goes off and the emergency lights start flashing to warn officers that the dog is in danger.

The latest edition of the alert system comes with a remote pager that fits on the officer's gun belt. The pager will vibrate if the temperature in the car gets too hot.

"The technology keeps getting better throughout the years, like all technology," Sgt. Houser said.

Still, technological advancements can't always step in for human action.

"(One of our officers) left the car to do paperwork inside and the alarm went off and when he noticed the alarm, he ran out to his car and it was hot inside the car, but luckily enough the equipment, that was installed in there, worked perfectly," Sgt. Houser said.

According to news reports, a heat-sensing system was on order for the patrol car where Sam Diesel died in July.

Authorities in Mulberry, Fla., say the car's air conditioner failed, bringing the German Shepherd's life to a horrific end.

"I hate to hear it," Sgt. Houser said. I have to almost turn off on the TV when I see it on the news. I hate to hear it because, I mean, the technology is out there."

While all cruisers in the Miami Beach K9 Unit are already equipped with the "Hot-N-Pop" system, the technology is common but not mandatory in Florida.

With a system costing less than $1,000, and in a region where the average high temperature throughout the year hovers around 80 degrees, it's affordable technology to protect a priceless investment.

These stories make me sick. These animals are their partners. Especially the idiot that didn't take his dog inside with him when he did his paperwork. That is just plain animal cruelty.

What is wrong with these officers? These dogs are their partners! Would they leave their partners in a car to cook?

You would think living and working in Florida the cops would be more aware of overheating in the K-9 dogs.

This is definitely cruelty and abuse to dogs. What a terrible death for a dog to over heat in a car. I hope they have learned not to rely on technology.

I am equally shocked. I am grateful to the new sensing devices and even though it was an "accident" I don't believe that Coral Springs Deputy should be given another K9 companion. OK, so I am opinionated!

Nothing like this should ever happen to a dog on duty. It is sickening to think that these dogs are not getting everything they deserve when they are doing their best for our society. I hope the new security can help these dogs stay safe.

The technology can be the best in the world, but there will always be the human component which is never failproof. These same policemen would be calling animal control on any civilians who left their dogs in hot cars.... IN JULY.

I don't get this. The technology is there, and many times installed, yet they forget to turn it on. Or no charges because it was an accident??? If it wasn't a police officer, that person would have been charged with animal cruelty. I never take my dog with me if she can't come inside where ever I'm going. I understand it's different for k9 units, but come on. How can you forget about your partner???

I agree with Christy, and with Whitney. If this would have been a civilian, they would have been charged more heavily. Forgetting your dog is in the car is as bad as forgetting your child is in the car. And all the technology in the world won't do any good if the person behind it doesn't know what to do.

It is ridiculous that this continues to happen. It is common sense that dogs cannot be left in hot cars. To dishonor working K9 cops this way is very disheartening.

The animal hospital I worked for developed a Police Dog program that taught officers proper care and first aid for their dogs in the field. You'd think police depts in these states would work together with vets and ASPCA's to set up similar programs.

You'd think the police would be smarter than this...even if they don't care about their dogs (hard to fathom), you'd think they'd think of what they pay for these dogs and their training.

What a horrible way for the poor dogs to die! You'd think that the police force would be more concerned about the deaths of valuable animals such as their K9 unit members. It's not like they can just go find another one right away (not that any animal can just be replaced). $1000 isn't anything in comparison with a life, and whoever manages the local police budgets needs to get these approved ASAP.

I don't understand if you feel that your going to be out of the car for a while and your dog is going to be in there, why can't you put the conditioner on low? Or why can't the window go down if there is a cage blocking the window for the dog? This is really sad I would have for my dog to die like that.

There is no reason why the windows can't be put down with grates so the dogs cannot jump out. Sun shields are also easily accessible. There is no reason for these dogs to die when something CAN be done to prevent it from happening.

This sucks! Poor dogs...seems like they would be worth the $1,000 system for the cruisers since they get so much training. There is a problem here!

As many times as I have heard of this happening to both animals, especially police dogs and babies, I cannot understand. I understand it not being on purpose but I cannot understand this kind of thing happening accidently. I cannot even think of the babies and dogs this has happened to - cannot even go there!

Sorry but the dogs did not have to die. Especially when they are trained officers who know what can happen to thier dogs. No excuses. It makes it worse that the technology is out there , and yet again its only as good as the person using it .

I don't even understand how something like this can happen. Given the number of stories in the press about children dying in hot cars, why wouldn't the police be especially aware of the hazards of leaving the dog in the car?

If the dog must remain in the car, have an extra key. Keep the car running with the air conditioning on and lock the door. The dog should not be loose in the car in case the dog decides to shift the vehicle!

It doesn;t matter that it was an accident. Lots of things are accidents. But when it takes a creature's life, there needs to be consequences. If a member of the public was to have something happen like this, you know there would probably be charges. I feel that this man needs to be punished, even if it were an accident. If he truly loved his dog, he wouldn't have let this happen.

Leaving an animal or small child alone in a car in a place like Florida is just plain dumb! No matter what kind of safety precautions are there, nothing is fail-safe and the poor creatures have to pay for it. Even with the windows open it gets dangerously hot. Methinks another solution will have to be found before more dogs die.

If we did that to our dogs, it would be a cruelty charge.

The cost of the system is nothing when you compare it to the time/training going into a K-9 dog. This is an animal that serves and protections. If a dog is killed in the line of duty, isn't the criminal charged with it's death too? Well, the police officier would not have left a fellow officier in distress. Those dogs are fellow officiers. Those officiers should be banned from the K-9 program.

I feel so bad for these dogs. It's horrible how the k9 that had passed away that had the system in his car but the officer turned off the car so it didn't work. I believe it should be mandatory. How many tickets police give out on a daily basis would cover this. And I also agree I do not believe it was an accident, and if this happens to k9s the officer should not be able to participate in the k9 program. Those dogs save the lives of the officers. THey are their partners. Shouldn't the officers return the favor. Because really they are killing their own partner. Shows how selfish those officers are!
