Horses for Slaughter

Browse News

A sticky issue has arisen since the Humane Society of the United States succeeded in getting horse slaughtering banned earlier this year – and that's what to do with the abandoned or unwanted horses.

The previous method was to slaughter the horse or surrender it to one the few horse rescued.

But with slaughtering outlawed, horse rescues are becoming overwhelmed.

The result: many horse owners say they don't know what to do with the horses they can no longer care for.

Today, hay prices are high and the economy is somewhat low – making horses harder to care for.

And with slaughter houses closed, the sometimes sick and elderly animals have to go somewhere. It's illegal to simply leave them where they lay – and the alternative is to sell the animals to one of a few outfits that will transport them to Mexico for slaughter.

That's the same kind of slaughter that was just banned here – and the HSUS reports it's working diligently to ban the transport of horses for slaughter outside U.S. borders, too.

Many of these animals don't need to die and can be adopted to willing families – but with the rescues that would care for them filling up fast, there's no saying what will happen to the 80 to 100K horses that won't be slaughtered this year.

I wish it were only the sick or elderly involved in being no longer wanted or needed.Unfortunately it is much more broader than that!Too many are young and have never been handled!Even more have been mishandled and even become dangerous to be around.

I think that people should only sell horses if there is a long-term plan in place for what happens if a horse is sick. ages, or if the people get sick, bankrupt, or lazy.

This is a difficult situation. Slaughtering the horses should not be an option, not here and not in Mexico.

SURPRISE......The purchase of a horse requires some thought and long-term planning. I believe that if you plan to acquire one, you need to plan to have a reserve funding for euthanasia and disposal if that terrible day comes. Isn't that a no-brainer?
Sure, sometimes life takes unexpected turns and maybe you have to sell a horse, but at least being responsible in the way I mentioned above would prevent the plight of very elderly or ill horses. That would reduce the numbers of surplus and the problem of slaughter somewhat.

We've read some good stories about horse rescue on Zoo Too but we must also do more as a society to establish a good life for these wonderful animals.

A lot more of the horses would be adopted if the word was out there! If the horses are tame and in good enough shape, they could give them to programs that help disabled adults and children. We have such a program here. They are very beneficial in many ways!

I think the word IS out there.... It's just the sheer number of homeless horses and the limited homes/barns/ranches that can properly adopt and care for them. They're not your "average" pet like a cat or dog with many different needs.

It is a great success banning horse slaughter, but this is a great big problem. I hope that rescues are able to get the funding they need to properly care for these thousands of homeless horses.

There are so many young adults that would do anything for a horse and they teach them so much responsibility. I think parents should be able to get these horses for their children PROVIDING they pay for having them properly trained for their kids. I know when I was growing up I would have pestered my parents to pieces for one of these horse.

If you purchase a horse it should be like a cat or dog you keep it and take care of it in sickness and in health. just like anyting else if you take care of it, it will be with you for a long time. Dont just use it and throw it away. How about putting it out to pasture and let it live life to its fullest.

I think that if there by adopting a wild horse the government could give you a grant for the care of your horse. I had a horse for 6 years and I would love another one, but the cost of their boarding alone would not allow me to live. Maybe the government could pey 1/2 months board for every horse you adopt. I really don't think it is a far-fetched idea. If there is anyone that knows how I could help let me know.

With good early care, horses can be useful for riding well into their twenties but as with most species, people think it would be "fun" to raise their own. We overbreed everything and then don't want to be responsible for the animals in their older years. Use and throw away.

people need to think long and hard BEFORE getting an animal. If the horses are ill take them to the vet and have them euthanized. If they are well then see if the rescues know someone maybe out of state that could provide for them.

This is horrible. Im totally against slaughtering horses. The dumb people should never take on the responsibility of owning a horse if they can't fron the start take care of it properly.

they banned it from this country. so these animals get sent on truck that were full when they got on, trucked for hours without food, water, or stopping to stretch their legs. to have their throat slashed and bleed to death or killed in other various ways. atleast if there was a slaughter house in the us. they could evaluate the horses see if they are available for adoption AND ONLY THEN, humanely slaughter them. i'm not pro slaughter but if it would save these horses from being terrorized, abused or mistreated it might just be woth it.

Poor horses. I know lots of people that would love to have one - but can't because of lack of space. How sad. Again - people need to stop breeding horses and not trying to own one if they can not take care of it.

A lot of people knew this was going to happen and the humane societies should have been gearing up to deal with it. In a lot of communities it is illegal to bury an animal so even if you want to have a horse put down by a vet you have to pay for cremation. Cremation runs at least $300.00.
In theory, to humanely dispose of 80K horses - the tab would be $24,000,000.00.
A better alternative should have been implemented.

This is difiently a problem and I don't know of a solution. We somehow need to find humane ways to put them down when we have to. Since the ban on horse slaughter, the number of horses are rising and soon the rescues will be maxed out with horses and no homes for them. This does need addressed to the fullest and very quickly.

People need to realize that HSUS is not supporting animal welfare, it's an ANIMAL RIGHTS group that is working legislatively to get rid of all breeding cats and dogs, and make sure there's no place for horses in our country.

I think we just need to take care of animals, and if that means killing them once they get too old to be able to really function, that's better than abusing them.

This is a really hard subject, no one wants horses to be slaughtered, but the article makes a good point. What are people going to do with their horses that are too old to really do anything with, when they can't really afford them?? I think that we should allow slaughter because it's better than sending them to Mexico where they might also be abused!

Federal assistance for the horse rescues would help immensely. Most are run totally on private donations. Federal money could help them expand, take in more horses, and afford the feed and veterinary care necessary to rehabilitate them.

If breeding was also regulated, there would be more room for those already needing homes.

There is a need for slaughter. It needs to be humane. Along with slaughter there needs to be responsible breeding programs too. As a horse owner and breeder I think we need to be responsible with our choices. With the bottom out of horse markets, breeding should be put on hold. The hay, grain and economy situation is another factor that makes raising equine even tougher. Without slaughter houses though I think we are going to start seeing more horses turned loose to fend for themselves. This is inhumane within its self.

we owe it to them to find them homes no matter what the price. and i think that slaughtering horses should be banned but on the other hand, if many horses are sickly it may be costly to euthanize them all

If the horse is sick or unwanted, put it down rather then send it to a slaughter house. At least you know it had a good life and you're sure what happened to it. Family horses, or any horses for that matter, going to such a place is cruel and inhumane. If it was done humanely and decently with respect for the horse, it would be a different matter. But as it stand, don't give your horse away or sell it, put it down, then you know it's safe.

Everytime this topic is discussed it is presented as if there are only two solutions - go back to slaughter or let them suffer and die.
There are more solutions.
Cows that die before they go to slaughter or are too sick to stand and walk(those poor abused cows from the California videos) are PTS and can be rendered.
Personally I had my elderly horse put to sleep and buried on our farm.
You can have animals that are already picked up and disposed of. Yes that costs something BUT it costs something to own a horse as well. If you truly cared for your horse, why would you ever consider sending it to a slaughter house crammed in a truck jammed with other horses and run through an assembly line while it is scissored to death while it is still alive?
You can have a horse PTS if you cannot care for it any longer and then have it's body removed.
