A sticky issue has arisen since the Humane Society of the United States succeeded in getting horse slaughtering banned earlier this year – and that's what to do with the abandoned or unwanted horses.
The previous method was to slaughter the horse or surrender it to one the few horse rescued.
But with slaughtering outlawed, horse rescues are becoming overwhelmed.
The result: many horse owners say they don't know what to do with the horses they can no longer care for.
Today, hay prices are high and the economy is somewhat low – making horses harder to care for.
And with slaughter houses closed, the sometimes sick and elderly animals have to go somewhere. It's illegal to simply leave them where they lay – and the alternative is to sell the animals to one of a few outfits that will transport them to Mexico for slaughter.
That's the same kind of slaughter that was just banned here – and the HSUS reports it's working diligently to ban the transport of horses for slaughter outside U.S. borders, too.
Many of these animals don't need to die and can be adopted to willing families – but with the rescues that would care for them filling up fast, there's no saying what will happen to the 80 to 100K horses that won't be slaughtered this year.

Sure, sometimes life takes unexpected turns and maybe you have to sell a horse, but at least being responsible in the way I mentioned above would prevent the plight of very elderly or ill horses. That would reduce the numbers of surplus and the problem of slaughter somewhat.

In theory, to humanely dispose of 80K horses - the tab would be $24,000,000.00.
A better alternative should have been implemented.

If breeding was also regulated, there would be more room for those already needing homes.

There are more solutions.
Cows that die before they go to slaughter or are too sick to stand and walk(those poor abused cows from the California videos) are PTS and can be rendered.
Personally I had my elderly horse put to sleep and buried on our farm.
You can have animals that are already picked up and disposed of. Yes that costs something BUT it costs something to own a horse as well. If you truly cared for your horse, why would you ever consider sending it to a slaughter house crammed in a truck jammed with other horses and run through an assembly line while it is scissored to death while it is still alive?
You can have a horse PTS if you cannot care for it any longer and then have it's body removed.
