'Hind' Over Matter:Paraplegic Cat Learns to Walk

Browse News

RINGOES, N.J. -- A medical marvel in more ways than one, Tashi the kitten was born with a congenital spinal chord condition that paralyzed his hind legs. But Tashi, unaware of his handicap, is still making every effort to walk.

Rescued from a feral cat colony in Ohio, nearly 6-month-old Tashi recently arrived at Tabby's Place, a cage-free cat sanctuary in Ringoes.

"Everyone was very excited about Tashi coming," said Tabby's Place founder, Jonathan Rosenberg.

Tabby's Place specializes in finding homes for cats in desperate circumstances. If not placed, cats like Tashi can remain at the New Jersey facility for life.

"Just having these cats here and being able to help them is really why we do this," Rosenberg said.

Teasing Tashi with a long piece of string, senior veterinary technician Denise Jeffries, was enticing him to chase it. Tashi slithered toward the string under the power of his healthy front legs, dragging his hind limbs, before lunging forward with a huge hop, trying to grab the string.

"Whoa!" Jeffries exclaimed, reacting to the brown and white kitten's all-out attempt to move.

"Tashi would've never made it out in the wild, and most shelters would've just put him down," she said.

Eventually, Tashi did indeed reach the dangling string.

"You got your string. Good boy!" cooed Angela Townsend, development director at Tabby's Place.

"I think I speak for all of us here when I say it touches our hearts very deeply that he has so much determination in him," Townsend said. "And that he has such a strong will to live, and strong will to just be a happy little kitten, living a full life."

In a best case scenario, Tashi will learn to use his hind legs to walk with them to some degree. In a worst case, his rear limbs will gain strength, so that they will not drag behind him as he relies on his front legs.

"With doing the walking he will have a little bit more ability to right himself," Jeffries said. "A little more activity and strength in his hind legs, which is what we want him to do."

Tashi was sent to Tabby's Place because they recently cared for another paraplegic cat, named Bagera. His hind legs were paralyzed when he was hit by a car. He now uses a cart to get around.

"His nerves were, they didn't really react much at all," Jeffries said. "He didn't have very many reflexes."

Tashi's prospects are more promising, however, because the nerves in his hind legs remain intact. Tashi's spine is noticeably crooked, which prevents the needed neurological communication from his brain to his hind legs.

Nevertheless, Tashi is being taught to use his hind legs through physical therapy, a relative rarity for cats.

Jeffries wrapped a thin band, similar to a leash, around Tashi's middle, holding each end directly above the kitten. This supported Tashi, enabling him to put weight on his hind legs so they would not collapse underneath him as he maneuvered down a hallway, with Jeffries right beside him.

Although a bit wobbly, Tashi managed to walk several feet at various points before needing a rest.

"It's going to be a challenge," Jeffries said. "But a challenge with great reward though."

One way to prompt Tashi to move his hind legs is by raising his tail. Indeed, during the walking exercise with the band, when Jeffries lifted Tashi's tail, the cat instinctively moved his rear legs in a walking motion.

"Muscle training is going to be a big part of his progress," Jeffries said. "To be able to steer himself in the right direction with the front end, as well as to be able to be able to support himself on the hind end."

At Tabby's Place, the staff says they are hopeful that Tashi will be adopted. Part of that optimism is because Bagera, another paraplegic cat they helped, has found a new home, having been adopted by a veterinarian.

"My faith in humanity has actually gone up as a result of doing this, when I see some of the adoptions that we've had," Rosenberg said. Tabby's Place recently found a home for Bellis, a cat born blind, with just slits for eyes.

After his tiresome physical therapy session, Tashi needed a rest. Even as he lay relaxing, though, his hind legs continued to pump quickly in a walking motion, because his brain cannot tell them to stop.

"Your legs are still going," Jeffries futilely reminded the exhausted kitten.

Despite all the extra work and care that cats like Tashi need, employees at Tabby's Place say it is all worth it, regardless of what the future holds for them.

"Just seeing the quality of life that's there," Jeffries said. "The sparkle in their eyes that's still there."

Prospective owners of Tashi should not shy away because of his handicap, Townsend said.

"Whatever extra care you may have to give a cat like Tashi is infinitely worth it in terms of the love you get," she said.

Tashi is a very lucky boy! That is how we helped our cerebeller hypoplasia cat Ty Ty to learn to walk, using a sling and holding his tail, He is a happy boy who just does things differently than other cats.

We had a cat at our shelter who had a neurologic problem and couldn't control his back half. We thought he'd be there forever, but he got adopted! His new family sends us updates and he's doing quite well. He's even learned to get up stairs!

This is another good feel story. It is amazing how animals just find their way around a challenge. I am sure that this cat will continue to do great with the physcial therapy it is receiving.

What a heartwarming story! It's great that there are shelters out there who can afford to invest in a life like Tashi's. Hopefully a forever home will turn up for him when he's ready.

It's awesome that there are places that can work with this type of severe health issue. Hopefully, the little guy will get a great home that can deal with his neurological issues.

It's a sweet story, but sometimes you have to stand back and look at the situation with a larger eye. What future does this animal have? Living in a shelter, probably. And altho they say the cats can stay for life, eventually the resident colony is going to outgrow the space. Sometimes you have to be practical and acknowledge that not every animal can be saved.

Jello, I beg your pardon, but Tashi has a wonderful life. I get monthly updates on what is happening with him and the others at Tabby's Place which is a sanctuary, not a shelter. There is a huge difference in the two. I'm truly sorry that you feel the way you do because you will miss out on the special relationship with a special needs animal. The day I met Tashi and he looked up into my eyes, I knew he wanted to live. I knew he ENJOYED life. Everyone that has met this little cat has said the same thing. You should check out Tabby's Place and Best Friends Animal Society for that matter to see what a sanctuary for animals truly is. Until a society is prepared and willing to accept and care for the least memebers of its community it will not grow and prosper. Finally, we are beginning to realize that stray animals and those with special needs deserve a chance at life just as anyone else does. Tashi has no pain issues and he doesn't know he's "special" and thanks to Tabby's Place he will have a chance to become the most he can be. Fortunately, he was not found by you otherwise he may not have ever known what life can be. The "resident colony" at Tabby's Place is spayed and neutered. Their home is a beautiful building built with cats in mind. They won't outgrow the space as they can't reproduce and the caretakers only take in the amount of cats that they can adequately care for. When a cat is adopted another one can take its place. I don't know how you think a sanctuary is run, but I don't think you get it.

Cats are the most amazing creatures, and the "special" ones are truly incredible. Tashi's going to be a wonderful companion for someone who will accept him as he is and is willing to give him the extra assistance he may need in life. I know that from experience....

About 6 years ago, we adopted a 1 day-old kitten. When she started trying to walk, we discovered that she had skeletal and joint deformities in her pelvis and hind legs that might've prevented her from ever becoming self-mobile. Our vet recommended putting her down before we got attached, but too late! I was already in love with her. We gave her a chance, thinking that we might have to build her a "kitty wheelchair"...and she learned to walk, run, and navigate stairs on her own, without mechanical aids. She's 8 lbs. of pure cattitude and doesn't seem to know that she's handicapped - and I'm not about to tell her, especially considering she's been known to intimidate big dogs into submission! (She scared the heck out of one at our vet's office; they had to cover her cage before the dog would even go into the kennel room with her.) And yes, she's spoiled rotten and likes to boss her resident humans around. LOL

Wow, that's AWESOME! And Tabby's Place is a marvelous idea. It's good to know that someone out there loves the puddies enough to make a home for them, whether they get adopted or not. God bless you all for giving the puddies their lives. Wish there were Tabby's Places all over the world!!

Long ago, my kids found a blind kitten. I would have had her put down except my son asked the vet "what will it take to save her?" So she had surgery to remove her destroyed and infected eyes. She lived to be 16 and died of bone cancer. From that time I've had a special spot for special needs cats. Currently, I have one who has a congenital birth defect and both her hind legs turn under. If she were human she would be considered bilaterally clubfooted. She gets around by lifting her back legs up slightly and balancing on her front legs. She has really well muscled front legs, shoulders and chest as a result.
Handicapped animals are such an inspiration to me.

someone else with a three-legged cat! i have one too - she's missing her right back leg. The only thing she can't do is jump on the counter, can't get enough push to make it that high. She does run up and down the stairs, jumps on the bed and couch and chairs and isn't afraid to mix it up with my other cats.

at the rescue we had a cerabella hyperplasia kitty. She wobbles greatly when she walks but she doesn't think of herself as handicapped. In fact she is a typical dominant female, trying to lord over the other cats.

it's amazing to me that animals don't sit and whine about their lot in life - they just make the best of it and live!
