Hidden in Darkness: ‘Trunking’ is Dog Fighting’s Ugly Secret

Browse News

NEW YORK -- One of the most barbaric forms of animal cruelty has an underbelly which for years has remained literally hidden in darkness: “Trunking” is dog fighting’s ugly secret.

“It’s just that taboo,” Tio Hardiman, a Chicago-based, dog fighting consultant to the Humane Society of the United States.

Capt. Steve Shatkin of the New Jersey SPCA described trunking to Pet Pulse at the state’s headquarters in New Brunswick.

“Two dogs will be thrown, literally, into the trunk of a car like this,” Shatkin said, pointing to a mid-sized car in NJSPCA’s parking lot. “(The) trunk is closed, and the operators either drive around for a set period of time, or just leave them in there with the trunk closed."

“And after a certain time, open the trunk, and the best man left is standing. And it’s a bloody mess in there, and that’s how they declare a winner.”

The carcass of the defeated dog is typically tossed to the side of the road, says Hardiman, who also is a pit bull advocate.

“Once in a while I’ve seen it, OK?” Hardiman said. “I know some guys may have put some dogs in a trunk. They fought, and then the next thing you know they turned the music up real loud -- for about 15 minutes, maybe 30 minutes.

“And then you open up the trunk, one of the dogs might be dead, the other one might be mangled up.”

Across the country, Pet Pulse conducted numerous interviews with officers in animal control and law enforcement specializing in animal cruelty cases. Due to the nature of trunking, relatively few had even handled a trunking case first-hand.

For some dog fighters, trunking is a chosen method because it is so difficult for police to detect, in fact nearly impossible, authorities say. Typically it can neither be seen nor heard.

“(For) law enforcement driving by, it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow,” said NJSPCA Cpl. Al Peterson, whose beat includes known dog fighting ghettos in the crime-ridden city of Newark.

Inner cities are prime trunking territory, with participants partial to larger cars with spacious trunks, Peterson says.

“I found out about it through police intelligence coming out of North Carolina,” Peterson said of how the re-born crime hit his radar. “The criminal element never sleeps. They’re always thinking of some kind of way to do something to get it done.”

Trunking has existed for at least two decades, authorities say. Yet not a single agency contacted by Pet Pulse could claim one arrest, much less a conviction for trunking.

“It’s out there,” Shatkin said. “And it’s a technique that amateur, urban dog fighters will use as a way to thwart law enforcement. It’s just another creative, brutal method of dog fighting.”

While fighting dogs in trunks is not new in concept, the term, “trunking,” is, Hardiman says. The results of a Google search proved it with barely a notable entry surfacing after entering “trunking” and “dog fighting.”

During his younger days, Hardiman says he ran Chicago’s mean streets and associated with dog fighters. While the illegal blood sport is still rampant in the Windy City, Hardiman says trunking is more prevalent on the East Coast.

“Nobody’s heard about it,” said Hardiman, as he walked through the West Side of Chicago’s Austin section with his own pit bull. “This is the first time that it’s really come up again, and it’s resurfaced just a little bit.”

Urban youth, often unable to afford entertainment, sometimes use trunking for amusement at the expense of helpless dogs, Hardiman says.
“If your music is blasting, you can actually be driving around. So it’s like a thrill,” Hardiman said. “It’s exciting just to have those dogs gorging each other up in the trunk, while you’re smoking a blunt or something like that.”

But the web of dog fighting’s underground hierarchy is best defined by three levels, according to Hardiman.

“Level One:” one-on-one street fights arranged by teens, with little or no money gambled.

“Level Two:” fights in abandoned buildings or garages, often involving those with gang affiliations, with hundreds to thousands of dollars wagered.

“Level Three:” sophisticated dog rings, like Michael Vick’s, carried out in a pit with spectators, handlers and a referee, with up to hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake.

Trunking typically happens on Level Two, and can serve as a dog-fighting training ground for dogs and breeders, Hardiman says.

“You can definitely build your reputation, because every time you come out of the trunk and you don’t have many scars on you, you won the fight,” Hardiman said.

“Once they let you out of the trunk, your reputation gets bigger, and bigger and bigger because you had the baddest fighting dog.”

Recalling a cruelty call in Norfolk, Va., Mark Kumpf, a former animal control officer for the city, told Pet Pulse he confronted juveniles suspected of trunking.

“The dogs had some clearly fresh injuries on them. And we were able, through our investigation, to determine that they had actually placed the dogs in a vehicle a short time before and allowed the dogs to fight,” said Kumpf, who now is the president of the National Animal Control Association in Kansas City.

Reports of trunking also stem out of Indianapolis.

Stacey Coleman, president of Indy Pit Crew, a pit bull advocacy group in Indianapolis, says some known gang members told her they were involved in trunking.

“It was something that these particular young people were aware of,” Coleman told Pet Pulse. “They suggested they had participated in it.”

To end the streets’ appeal of dog fighting, Hardiman helps rehabilitate former dog fighters and their pit bulls through the Humane Society’s Campaign to End Dog Fighting. A few of the program’s participants and their dogs roamed the streets with Hardiman during Pet Pulse’s interview.

One of those men -- a former dog fighter -- says he no longer fights dogs and advocates against the practice.

Wanting to only be referred to as “Marco,” he recounted his dog fighting days, telling Pet Pulse the mutilation of innocent dogs had only bothered him for one reason in particular.

“You lost your money,” he said.

While the loss pinched Marco’s wallet, Pet Pulse asked if the dogs’ injuries ever hurt his conscience.

“Back then you didn’t really care. You trained it, fed it to do what it do,” Marco said.

Marco’s candor continued with an answer about if, at that time, he had any feelings at all for a dog maimed in a fight.

“No, you can’t have no feelings or you wouldn’t fight it,” Marco said.

That lack of empathy toward the canine victims represents a prevailing attitude among those involved in trunking, Hardiman says.

“Guys are just in the swing of things, guys in the community,” he said, adding they figure, “Hey look, it sounds like it’s something good to do, fight some dogs in a trunk, OK?”

The HSUS told Pet Pulse that national statistics on animal cruelty convictions from dog fighting are not kept. While the NJSPCA says that since the Vick case, tips from the public have increased but dog fighting arrests have not.

“I don’t think we’re going to just be able to put the brakes on it,” Shatkin said. “We just have to persevere, and we have to continue our efforts in law enforcement.”

Until police make better inroads, trunking will remain cloaked in darkness.

I agree, like Michael Vick he needs to be taken out and shot. These people are sick, really sick. I feel they are a danger to society. If they are cruel to animals like most serial killers then how do you think they treat the people around them. Something needs to be done to stop this madness. Laws need to be passed and abuse to animals needs to stop being ignored. I just want to punch these idiots in the face. I feel that if they are so big and bad, why don't they fight it out for the money.

I had never heard of this either...I now have the phone number in my phone and I will use it if I even suspect anything like this...how horrible. The people who do this to these dogs are not human as far as I am concerned. I wish they could be subjected to the worst kind of torment and cruelty imaginable and let them beg for mercy and not get it. I would have no sympathy for these so-called people. I would laugh and celebrate while they were begging for help. These poor abused dogs, and now we have Sarah Palin with her crack about being a pitbull with lipstick...that is not the kind of publicity these dogs need. I am a conservative, but all of you dog lovers and pit bull lovers better remember, Palin is not your dog's friend. Do you really want someone like her in office. It is bad enough that Tyrone Watts (D) a Rep in Ohio has a bill that if it passes will demand that all pits and pit bull mixes in OH be DESTROYED. He wants ALL of them KILLED. Get this man out of public office and get someone in who will help protect these wonderful animals.

About three weeks ago a man I arrested for fighting dogs was convited and sentenced to 15 years in prison. It was the first time in our area anyone has ever been arrested, much less convicted. We are doing something about it, but animal fighting is such an "under ground" activity it is very difficult to gather evidence on. I worked a year on that one case. The media swarmed the place when we raided the house. When he was sentenced, no one was there... People forget...

This is just terrible and if they get the jerks that do this they just slap them on the hands and give a fine. Something really needs to be done with making the law a lot stiffer against animal curelty.

We have got to send letters, emails and phone calls to our congressmen about stiffer laws for animal abusers. Fines are not enough, some jail time and then send them to rehabilitation facilities where abused animals are being rehab. Make them work under supervision to help these animals get better. Seeing it and their participating in the animals' rehab might be a deterrent.

This is pretty disturbing. I would think that police should be able to pull over anybody who seems suspicious, ask them to turn down their music and then listen for noises coming from the trunk. If the officer hears anything they should be able to open the trunk and haul the sicko humans off to jail. I just don't understand harming animals for money. What kind of mother raised these people?

I don't know where all they do this, but here we do pull over anyone that seems suspicious. "Trunking" will be included in the Friday training for the patrol officers... I would love to get a car full of these guys... I wonder how many I could get in my trunk???

I never thought that I would hear something that would make the increase in gas prices (and the decrease in the size of cars) sound good.
The police need to be able to search the trunks of cars that may have dogs inside. If the vehicle is used it should be impounded and the driving rights of the owners/drivers suspended

Just when I think things can't get worse. . . If they turn their music up very loud, can't they be stopped - many cities have noise levels that can't be gone over. If police would start to enforce the minor laws (i.e. noise) they possibly would be able to stop this horrid practice.

I thought about adding that. If they are already breaking the law with the loud music..... of course that would probably violate someone's rights - like the criminal's.

I guess this is one of the differences between us and them as myself or no one I know could even have thought of this. This is vile and disgusting. You know if they have no empathy for the dog they certainly have no empathy for another human and therein lies the problem.
That being the case perhaps it would be just as much "fun" to throw each other in a trunk and let someone drive around smoking a blunt enjoying the excitement.

I guess dog fighting has no limits! This is so sad for the dogs, and no matter how harsh the punishment, people will still have this "sporting" event and others will still bet on them. But what will they tell their maker when they reach those pearly gates? or will they even get there? I hope not!

How disgusting! How would these dog fighters like it if we threw them in a trunk and had them fight it out while we rolled down the street. The man left standing got to live for another day until his next fight when he might be killed. This is just disgusting all the way around. I was kind of nauseated when they called "trunking" a "creative" way to keep dog fighting happening without getting caught. There is nothing creative about it. It is just plain horrible. I hope that those who dog fight in any form or hurt animals in any form get theirs in the end. Hopefully all of the money is worth it.

As far as those trying to stop such activities from taking place, I just wish them the best of luck. I will keep them all in my prayers. I give them credit for working so hard to save these animals' lives. It must be hard every day knowing that such cruel acts are taking place. I don't think I would be strong enough to do this kind of work. I would be crying every day. I just hope that they are able to better find and investigate these crimes so that more criminals can be punished and more lives saved.

These people are sociopaths, that have no feelings of guilt or remorse for the horrific acts that they involve themselves in.These people live amongst us,and one day it could be an human instead of a poor animal.
Small fines are not going to help,a few months of jail time, are not going to help.

You are completely right. These people who can be this cruel to animals, definitely have some mental issues. When will more people care about ending dog fighting? Will it be when one of these dog fighters goes out and kills a person? Too, we do need to take stronger action against people who hurt animals like this. We can't keep giving them a slap on the wrist. That isn't going to solve the problem.

I recently owned a pit bull puppy. Unfortunately, my pup was hit by a car last weekend and killed. She was only 5 months old, but while I was looking for her I imagined that she could have been stolen. I grieve for my little Delilah. She was such a sweet good natured dog, but I would much rather that she have died the way she did than to have fallen into the hands of people described in this article. She had a good life with me. She was a social dog that played with my other dogs and never thought of fighting at all! She was sweet and good natured as any pitt would be if they were raised in the right environment.

I'm sorry to hear about your little Delilah. I understand what you mean, though, about being glad she is not in bad hands. It must have been very sad to have lost her, but you did give her a good life. At least she got to have a good life. There are some dogs that never truly get to understand how great life can be for them. In those cases, I just ask God to be with them and give them an extra special life in Heaven, because that is what all animals deserve.

If dogs are raised with kindness, then they will be kind (except in those few cases of psychological disorder, just like with people). I also hope that those pups who know no kindness here, will find extra special comfort and kindness in Heaven.

So much senseless violence in this world.

The more people involve themselves in seemingly harmless 'outlets', the more real life violence doesn't seem real to them---even funny to them and there is no real consequence for their actions. Children, teens and adults see and participate in these outlets and that conditions their minds so that when it happens in real life, it does not seem real to them.

They have serious problems. I whole heartedly believe that some television shows, movies, and let's not forget the very violent, bloody video games, are an example of this.

It's bad enough when you see it happen with senseless violence towards people, but when they prey on helpless animals, that put their trust in people and those people take advantage of that--it is enough to sicken the normal person out there. The person that has a conscience and compassion.

There has to be more laws, more severe punishment for people of this sort. Along with some sort of therapy---maybe the kind of therapy that puts that person in the same situation as that animal so that they can feel the pain, anger, fear, abandonment as these poor animals.

I'm all for stepping up to the plate to seek these people out and punish them to the fullest extent of the law.

I love all animals and when I hear about this, it's very hard to have any sympathy for the sick person that participates in this sort of thing.

Let's all keep our eyes open and report anything like this and see to it that it is TAKEN CARE OF.

LET'S PRAY FOR OUR UNCONDITIONALLY LOVING FRIENDS THAT DON'T HAVE A VOICE.

I can see how the police would have a hard time trying to find out if this was going on but maybe the public could help. Until enough people step up and say Stop This, there's just not gonna be a way to stop them. We need to hold people accountable, starting with the ones we put in office. Those involved should face prison time, hugh fines and 3 strikes. I hate people. Well, any of them doing this crap or worse. How can you do that to an innocent animal? Lets start to pit them. Lets put that guy in a pit with some hugh trucker that can and will beat the crap or life outta them, I'd pay to watch that.

This is exactly why the punishments for animal cruelty, and especially dog fighting, need to be harsher. How else are we going to get the ruffians to cease their horribly evil deeds? Then people wonder why SOME pitbulls are so mean...why they get the horrible reputation they have...it's from things and people like this. This needs to end NOW. Otherwise, we're going to have breed bans, not only state wide, but NATION WIDE. We have some really, truly wonderful pit parents who are seriously concerned they won't be able to keep their homes because of the things some of these gangsters/ thugs do. How awful....my heart just breaks.

I agree penalties should be harsher instead of the usual slap on the wrist. This is so much like the Ancient Romans, you would think society had progressed past the need for such violent & deadly entertainment

REPULSIVE STORY! We are dealing with two-legged animals here, animals without values, respect for life, hearts or souls who in turn are offspring of older yet just as sick sires and the beat goes on and on and on....According to Hardiman, the dog fighting "consultant", "Urban youth, often unable to afford entertainment, sometimes use trunking for amusement". Bull! These selfsame urban youth can afford, booze, drugs and guns. Most of our parents or grandparents went through hard times, and most of them lived in the infamous "inner cities". Surely they were no angels. They were tough and combative and some commited crimes, but as a group they were not without morals. The vast majority of them didn't mug old ladies, they didn't rob convenience stores, they didn't murder each other, they didn't abuse their children and they didn't participate in such activities as "trunking". With our current stock of miscreants the schools, the churches, the legal system and most of all their parents have not only failed them--they in their total dereliction have created them.

It is unbelievable how cruel some of our youth have become. "Repulsive" is the perfect word for this story.

This story breaks my heart--I cannot deal with it emotionally anymore. I know that these gang members are just finding a way to fit in the only way they know how, but how did it get to be this bad?? Who is responsible for their catastophic plunge into evil??? Where can we start so we can help our society and give a better focus to these guys so they learn to feel and have mercy and do something good with their lives instead of torturing innocent animals??? Youth groups, sports, fun classes after school, good education, part time jobs perhaps?? So what are OUR politians doing?! This is the only way to stop it forever. Save the dogs by saving the people. Write to your local government and lets do something--TODAY! These dogs cannot wait any longer...

All I can say about this is that these people are sick. You cant have a consciense if you do something like this to a dog. It pissed me off when I read that the guy "marco" didn't care and he referred to pits as "it". I hate dog fighters and "trunkin" is even worse. I've never heard of this before and I hope I never encounter someone doing this nasty thing.
