Hidden in Darkness: ‘Trunking’ is Dog Fighting’s Ugly Secret

Browse News

NEW YORK -- One of the most barbaric forms of animal cruelty has an underbelly which for years has remained literally hidden in darkness: “Trunking” is dog fighting’s ugly secret.

“It’s just that taboo,” Tio Hardiman, a Chicago-based, dog fighting consultant to the Humane Society of the United States.

Capt. Steve Shatkin of the New Jersey SPCA described trunking to Pet Pulse at the state’s headquarters in New Brunswick.

“Two dogs will be thrown, literally, into the trunk of a car like this,” Shatkin said, pointing to a mid-sized car in NJSPCA’s parking lot. “(The) trunk is closed, and the operators either drive around for a set period of time, or just leave them in there with the trunk closed."

“And after a certain time, open the trunk, and the best man left is standing. And it’s a bloody mess in there, and that’s how they declare a winner.”

The carcass of the defeated dog is typically tossed to the side of the road, says Hardiman, who also is a pit bull advocate.

“Once in a while I’ve seen it, OK?” Hardiman said. “I know some guys may have put some dogs in a trunk. They fought, and then the next thing you know they turned the music up real loud -- for about 15 minutes, maybe 30 minutes.

“And then you open up the trunk, one of the dogs might be dead, the other one might be mangled up.”

Across the country, Pet Pulse conducted numerous interviews with officers in animal control and law enforcement specializing in animal cruelty cases. Due to the nature of trunking, relatively few had even handled a trunking case first-hand.

For some dog fighters, trunking is a chosen method because it is so difficult for police to detect, in fact nearly impossible, authorities say. Typically it can neither be seen nor heard.

“(For) law enforcement driving by, it wouldn’t raise an eyebrow,” said NJSPCA Cpl. Al Peterson, whose beat includes known dog fighting ghettos in the crime-ridden city of Newark.

Inner cities are prime trunking territory, with participants partial to larger cars with spacious trunks, Peterson says.

“I found out about it through police intelligence coming out of North Carolina,” Peterson said of how the re-born crime hit his radar. “The criminal element never sleeps. They’re always thinking of some kind of way to do something to get it done.”

Trunking has existed for at least two decades, authorities say. Yet not a single agency contacted by Pet Pulse could claim one arrest, much less a conviction for trunking.

“It’s out there,” Shatkin said. “And it’s a technique that amateur, urban dog fighters will use as a way to thwart law enforcement. It’s just another creative, brutal method of dog fighting.”

While fighting dogs in trunks is not new in concept, the term, “trunking,” is, Hardiman says. The results of a Google search proved it with barely a notable entry surfacing after entering “trunking” and “dog fighting.”

During his younger days, Hardiman says he ran Chicago’s mean streets and associated with dog fighters. While the illegal blood sport is still rampant in the Windy City, Hardiman says trunking is more prevalent on the East Coast.

“Nobody’s heard about it,” said Hardiman, as he walked through the West Side of Chicago’s Austin section with his own pit bull. “This is the first time that it’s really come up again, and it’s resurfaced just a little bit.”

Urban youth, often unable to afford entertainment, sometimes use trunking for amusement at the expense of helpless dogs, Hardiman says.
“If your music is blasting, you can actually be driving around. So it’s like a thrill,” Hardiman said. “It’s exciting just to have those dogs gorging each other up in the trunk, while you’re smoking a blunt or something like that.”

But the web of dog fighting’s underground hierarchy is best defined by three levels, according to Hardiman.

“Level One:” one-on-one street fights arranged by teens, with little or no money gambled.

“Level Two:” fights in abandoned buildings or garages, often involving those with gang affiliations, with hundreds to thousands of dollars wagered.

“Level Three:” sophisticated dog rings, like Michael Vick’s, carried out in a pit with spectators, handlers and a referee, with up to hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake.

Trunking typically happens on Level Two, and can serve as a dog-fighting training ground for dogs and breeders, Hardiman says.

“You can definitely build your reputation, because every time you come out of the trunk and you don’t have many scars on you, you won the fight,” Hardiman said.

“Once they let you out of the trunk, your reputation gets bigger, and bigger and bigger because you had the baddest fighting dog.”

Recalling a cruelty call in Norfolk, Va., Mark Kumpf, a former animal control officer for the city, told Pet Pulse he confronted juveniles suspected of trunking.

“The dogs had some clearly fresh injuries on them. And we were able, through our investigation, to determine that they had actually placed the dogs in a vehicle a short time before and allowed the dogs to fight,” said Kumpf, who now is the president of the National Animal Control Association in Kansas City.

Reports of trunking also stem out of Indianapolis.

Stacey Coleman, president of Indy Pit Crew, a pit bull advocacy group in Indianapolis, says some known gang members told her they were involved in trunking.

“It was something that these particular young people were aware of,” Coleman told Pet Pulse. “They suggested they had participated in it.”

To end the streets’ appeal of dog fighting, Hardiman helps rehabilitate former dog fighters and their pit bulls through the Humane Society’s Campaign to End Dog Fighting. A few of the program’s participants and their dogs roamed the streets with Hardiman during Pet Pulse’s interview.

One of those men -- a former dog fighter -- says he no longer fights dogs and advocates against the practice.

Wanting to only be referred to as “Marco,” he recounted his dog fighting days, telling Pet Pulse the mutilation of innocent dogs had only bothered him for one reason in particular.

“You lost your money,” he said.

While the loss pinched Marco’s wallet, Pet Pulse asked if the dogs’ injuries ever hurt his conscience.

“Back then you didn’t really care. You trained it, fed it to do what it do,” Marco said.

Marco’s candor continued with an answer about if, at that time, he had any feelings at all for a dog maimed in a fight.

“No, you can’t have no feelings or you wouldn’t fight it,” Marco said.

That lack of empathy toward the canine victims represents a prevailing attitude among those involved in trunking, Hardiman says.

“Guys are just in the swing of things, guys in the community,” he said, adding they figure, “Hey look, it sounds like it’s something good to do, fight some dogs in a trunk, OK?”

The HSUS told Pet Pulse that national statistics on animal cruelty convictions from dog fighting are not kept. While the NJSPCA says that since the Vick case, tips from the public have increased but dog fighting arrests have not.

“I don’t think we’re going to just be able to put the brakes on it,” Shatkin said. “We just have to persevere, and we have to continue our efforts in law enforcement.”

Until police make better inroads, trunking will remain cloaked in darkness.

I cannot believe that people would do that for "fun", let alone for money. It makes me me mad to hear about the increase in dog fight reports and the lack of arrests for them doing that! We need law enforcement to step up and do something about this, because if these people are willing to do this to their pets, what would they do to other people. We need to get these people off our streets! There is no reason for dogs to have to suffer at their owners entertainment expense! I am sickened by this whole dog fighting subject. I just can't stand knowing that this is going on right under our noses and nothing is being done!

The thought of these dogs suffering in the trunk of a vehicle for who knows how long makes me sick to my stomach. I can not imagine pain and suffering these poor animals endure. I can only hope that the old saying 'what goes around comes around' happens to these sick individuals.

The more I see these disturbing stories the more I begin to despise men, because that is who is doing these cruelties to defenseless animals. The men of our communities, young and old. Well, the one good thing I got out of this article is who to call .....877tipHSUS. or 877-847-4787. That is going in my cell phone right now.

I live in a major urban city, and every once in a while a large sedan will pull up next to my car as I'm idling at a stop light, with a couple youths in the front seat, and the music just BLARING. Next time this happens, I'll be taking down the license # and calling the cops. If nothing else, they get cited for noise violation. If they get stopped by the police, I'm pretty sure the police will make them turn the radio down. Then if the cop hears noise from the trunk, I think that would be "probable cause" to allow the cop to search the trunk. Let's get the authorities more aware of this!

What a sick, pathetic, waste of a human life if your only means of entertainment is dog-fighting or any other form of animal cruelty.

"What a sick, pathetic, waste of a human life if your only means of entertainment is dog-fighting or any other form of animal cruelty."

I am NOT defending the practice, but I just wanted to say, it takes a certain lack of knowledge of what it's like in a so-called "ghetto" environment to call someone pathetic because they can't find any wholesome entertainment (and I don't include TV in that term). There is literally nothing to do in a run-down inner-city neighborhood. You're lucky if you have a grocery store. And everything you do has to be done during the day for maximum safety. After dark you're pretty much sitting around with your nose in the TV and not doing much else.

I was lucky, because I lived in a neighborhood like that for four years and we were within walking distance of amenities due to the neighborhood being small and living on the edge of it. But again, that was luck. These guys are sitting around twiddling their thumbs, stressed out about the lack of amenities and lack of employment, and more than a few of them are likely suffering the aftereffects of abuse, lead poisoning, alcoholism (theirs or their caregivers'), and drugs (again, theirs or their caregivers'), and the kind of medical and psychological care you can get with that economic status is mediocre at best, even with Medicaid. A lot of factors go into making someone this way.

And it isn't just in the so-called "bad neighborhoods." I lived in a majority white rural area for a while and some of my neighbors were into cock-fighting. But again you have the poverty, the lack of amenities, the physical disadvantages.

We need to stop blaming individuals for systemic problems, and start actually doing something about the problems. Because society decides that someone who is poor is that way because they are morally deficient, it then decides to punish the poor by leaving them in their squalor. The poor can't bribe the police to look the other way, can't butter up a judge, can't hire a good lawyer, like middle-class and rich people can. They also can't get a get-out-of-jail-free card with whiteness, in many cases. So their "badness" is more on public display than that of the higher social classes.

But animal abuse happens no matter the social class. We need to address crime EVERYWHERE it occurs, not just where the targets are easy. Character is about what you do when no one is looking or when the going gets tough, and judging by that criteria, America is very short on character.

Great comment, however I fail to see what made you think I was referring to any sort of inner city "ghetto mentality" in my comment? It certainly was not intended, and I apologize if you thought it was. I will say that I think the "gangsta-wannabe" CULTURE out there plays MORE of a role in dog-fighting than the people you are describing, and most of them come from perhaps a lower-middle to middle class background - not true inner city. Just like not all people who live or once lived below the poverty level in the neighborhoods you describe resort to dog fighting for entertainment. The handful of desperately poor people I met when I was working for a day labor agency had no interest whatsover in dog fighting or trunking - they were either trying to feed their kids before DSS took them away, trying to find money for rent because not too many high-paying jobs are scouting for convicted felons, or they just needed money to buy whatever substance they were addicted to.

This is amazing that people still think animals are entertainment. I have had a pit, and he was great around kids and even kittens. It was even more of a testament to the breed, because he was a rescue, at 6 months (when I got him), he was skin, bones and muscles, literally. But he rose above that to be a wonderful companion.

And I even found in many books on dogs that one of the first things said about pit bulls, and American Statfordshire Terriers was that they are great with kids. Amazing considering many people say they are vicious killers. It is the people who make them that way. Not the dogs.

Anyone who's owned and loved a pit bull knows how loyal and sensitive they are. This is unspeakably horrible and I hope everyone involved gets their just desserts. Law enforcement needs to take this alot more seriously than they currently do. This kind of violence against animals only leads to similar violence against people.

This is bad. They should change the laws to allow police to search the trunk of suspected cars without a warrant. Honestly that probably would help a lot. Maybe it would help to test the blood to determine if it is dog blood, after which they should be prosecuted based on the evidence and whoever owns the car.

Let me get locked in the trunk with one of the sickos who gets caught--i'll make sure and bring my bat--and as a matter of fact, let's make the fight fair, since i'm sure they are all about fair--blindfold and bind em--THEN throw em in the trunk with me! Betcha they don't do it again. How sick. I wonder if we'll start doing that with children next. Sad, sad sad.

I don't really understand why this is considered acceptable behavior by anyone, under any situation. I can't understand why people use choke chains and shock collars so I guess its understandable that I don't can't truly comprehend this. I agree with Karen B that perhaps they should be locked in trunks too and see how they like it. Except, don't put the dog in the trunk with them. Instead put them in with another nasty person, why torture dogs further? How can people be so nuts to even think up something like this?

That makes me sick. I don't understand the thrill people get off of these dogs killing each other. Its really sad for the breed itself. More cities in our state are banning Pit Bulls, and soon I'm afraid that their won't be an allowed anywhere. Don't they realize they are killing a beautufil breed. This dog if bred and brought up right, can be a great family dog. It just so sad that people have to do stupid and disgusting things like this. To bad I can't lock them in a trunk with their dogs. They might change there minds.

Totally agree-way back when, pit bulls were THE family dog. Look at Petey from Little Rascals.

It's a shame years of mistreatment has led to a wonderful breed of dog being banned in more and more cities wach day. A damn shame.

I loved "Petey" and have been a fan of this breed although I have not had the opportunity to have one myself. It is a crime that they are treated like this and are now being banned--banning a breed of dog??!? Owners who treat dogs like this should be banned--not the dogs. Leave the good owners who love and care for these wonderful family dogs alone!

This is as sick as it can get. Perhaps police officers need to be better informed and make the effort to catch those monsters so they can be locked up. Anybody who can do something like that to an animal presents a danger for the entire human race. We all need to call our representatives to come up with a plan to stop those sick people.

Dog fighting is a family event for these people. They take their kids to these things. Women raise and train dogs to fight too. The kids watch the dog fights. Like someone said... This violence leads to domestic violence. The kids grow up to be just like their parents... And you wonder what is wrong with society today!!!! We as a nation and a culture have to do something...

Since many cities have noise pollution policies the police can start pulling people over for loud music. Maybe after they have the drivers turn down the music, they maybe able to hear some of these dogs.
