Hartz Recalls Nearly 5,000 Bags of Rawhide Chips

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation has recalled 4,850 bags of its "Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips" for dogs, after the company's routine testings found one bag was contaminated with Salmonella.

Hartz, based in Secaucus, N.J., announced the voluntary recall on Friday.

The rawhide chips, intended as snacks for dogs, were manufactured by a company in Brazil. The recalled bags were distributed to various locations, but mainly large, trademark pet stores, across the country.

No animals or humans have been reported to have contracted Salmonella or any other disease from the product, Hartz's spokesman, John Mullane told Pet Pulse today.

The move comes as a purely precautionary measure.

"We are going to look at this thoroughly to find out what could have gone wrong and consult with the manufacturing company," Mullane said.

As Hartz receives the recalled bags, the company will continue to test the products and investigate the source of the Salmonella, which can cause diarrheal illness and prove especially dangerous for small children or the elderly.

The two-pound plastic bag of chips with the lot codes "JC23282" and UPC number "3270096464" were distributed to a national retail customer Mullane could not identify.

Mullane says Hartz is now trying to get the word out on the recall, even though only one bag tested positive for Salmonella.

"The recall is intended to reassure customers and we are letting people know there is a potential for illness here," Mullane said.

This is the second recall of the year for Hartz, which pulled 739 bottles of "Vitamin Care for Cats" in March and 3,600 bottles of the same project in November 2007.

The Federal and Drug Administration's detection of Salmonella led to the "Vitamin Care for Cats" voluntary recalls.

Hartz is now suing the manufacturing company, UFAC USA Inc., for $1 million, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

It is alarming to see another pet product from a leading supplier be on the recall list. It is even more scary to think that our beloved pets trust us to provide safe treats and food. Our pets are most precious to us and it appears the food and drug may need to evaluate standards on all areas of industry. It affects humans to, especially when you say something is coated, the owner had to touch it or come in contact with it.

Its scary how many recalls are happening with pet products...

This is such a sad and scary trend. Food safety certainly has moved to the top of the list for both animals and humans.

These companies should have to put notices in the newspaper as well as the stores that sell the products. I recently got rid of pedigree dry food after noticing my local shelter throwing away the bag I had donated. I would not have known about the recall otherwise. I believe these products have a long shelf life. Let them be unsold in the warehouse until it can be determined if the product is safe or not.

It's disgusting to think of what commerical pet food is made out of. I only feed my dog organic whole foods (which many natural pet stores carry) and my pets have never been healthier.

Just because no reports of dog getting sick from them exist doesn't mean it didn't happen!

This is getting riduculous with the pet food industry. How can we trust these companies any more? Seems like someone is purposely trying to kill thousands of animals.

Hartz sucks. Every time I turn around they are recalling something! Why cant they just take the proper precautions in the first place and do it right the first time???!?

It seems that more food related items made NOT in the USA are just not safe for us to give our pets. More and more, I am trying to purchase only things made here in America. Those "made in USA" seem safer which is very important.

And as for Hartz, I will not purchas anything from them again.

OMG. Not again. Why is there such a problem w/ manufacturing companies now days? Or is it that they are just getting caught now that it's coming out more & more? Very appropriate conduct for the Hartz company to voluntarily recall them to prevent any problems. Why are their products being made in Brazil? Don't we make anything in The good O'le USA anymore? Here we know there are strict standards to abide by at least. Maybe, just maybe that drives the cost up? Well worth it if you ask me.

Glad to hear that the companies are testing their products. I still do not understand as to why we are going to other companies for ingredients for the products.

Why are the companies still trying to 'save' cost by importing if they know the risk involved? Money controls the world...

I feed mine a diet of fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines), occasionally lamb/beef, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, cod liver oil, and sometimes I add spaghetti sauce. They love it. One of my GSDs is allergic to all grains, all dairy, and chicken (even a lick's worth of egg yoke). Anyway, I was buying very expensive commercial dog food. No more itching! What I spend now is LESS, plus there is WAY LESS poop to pick up!

We don't feed rawhide because of the risk choking, now we have a second reason not to feed it. Glad they are doing a recall and hopefully no one's animals will get sick.
