Hartz Recalls Nearly 5,000 Bags of Rawhide Chips

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation has recalled 4,850 bags of its "Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips" for dogs, after the company's routine testings found one bag was contaminated with Salmonella.

Hartz, based in Secaucus, N.J., announced the voluntary recall on Friday.

The rawhide chips, intended as snacks for dogs, were manufactured by a company in Brazil. The recalled bags were distributed to various locations, but mainly large, trademark pet stores, across the country.

No animals or humans have been reported to have contracted Salmonella or any other disease from the product, Hartz's spokesman, John Mullane told Pet Pulse today.

The move comes as a purely precautionary measure.

"We are going to look at this thoroughly to find out what could have gone wrong and consult with the manufacturing company," Mullane said.

As Hartz receives the recalled bags, the company will continue to test the products and investigate the source of the Salmonella, which can cause diarrheal illness and prove especially dangerous for small children or the elderly.

The two-pound plastic bag of chips with the lot codes "JC23282" and UPC number "3270096464" were distributed to a national retail customer Mullane could not identify.

Mullane says Hartz is now trying to get the word out on the recall, even though only one bag tested positive for Salmonella.

"The recall is intended to reassure customers and we are letting people know there is a potential for illness here," Mullane said.

This is the second recall of the year for Hartz, which pulled 739 bottles of "Vitamin Care for Cats" in March and 3,600 bottles of the same project in November 2007.

The Federal and Drug Administration's detection of Salmonella led to the "Vitamin Care for Cats" voluntary recalls.

Hartz is now suing the manufacturing company, UFAC USA Inc., for $1 million, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

There needs to be stricter laws for pet food safety and inspection. Also, I wish we would stop accepting petfood from so many other countries such as China and Brazil. It's just too dangerous and our pets' health is not worth risking. The global economy has gotten so big and impersonal that no one knows who made what and where! This is not safe!

Not surprised by this, as many pet products are contaminated with salmonella. Just need to be careful with what you give your pets.

At least they are doing a recall, but I must say if it wasn't for zootoo I dont think I would have heard of the recall. I have not heard of any rawhide recall on the news so my thoughts are how many people don't know of this latest recall and are still giving this product to there dogs? I dont give them to my dogs and instead give my mighty chewers the hollow bones you can buy and fill them with a big dab of peanut butter and baby carrots and my dogs love them and I can keep refilling them. Another thing I do is I have the black kongs and will fill them with carrots, apple slices peanut butter and yougart and freeze them and thats a great and healthy treat to.

This is another reason to feed species appropriate raw food diet to out animals. After yet another recall, I dont know why people still have faith in pet food industry, and they still pay top money for junk food. Making your own pet food is not that much work, in a long run it will save you money and time. If someone has a pet then they should take full responsibility to provide the best care and food for them, after all they give you 100% and we should do the same. I have 14 cats and a dog and I make my own food. Just like anybody else I have job ( running my own business), I have kid in college, I my self take courses in college, take care of my father who has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and yes I have time to make my own pet food.

This is horrible. I hope no dogs get sick because of this. But I have to admit I can breath a sigh of relief, I do not give my dog rawhide. They can be dangerous and my vet told me that some rawhide could be coated with a chemical that can affect dogs. That was enough for me, I just don't feel there's any need to give dogs rawhide, especially after reading a story like this.

I personally don't give rawhide anything to my dogs. I don't like it,it gets soggy and tears off into little peices and they can choke on it. I have friends and family that do give it to their dogs. My Mom is one of them, she just bought a bag for her dogs. She took the bag back to the store. It was unopened.Thank goodness she didn't feed it to them.

I with not buying anything that isn't naturally made and the whole rawhide issue makes me scared to feed it to my super chewer! I wish someone would come up with something that my dogs liked as well and would last a long time.

ok, My firbabies don't get rawhide to begin with, but I am glad that Hartz is taking the time to do quality control testing and recalling the contaminated product.

Hartz needs to bring the manufacturing back to the US.

Just another reason why we need to be really careful what we feed our pets. With every recall it is showing people that maybe the only safe way to feed our pets is to make their food ourselves.

I am curious about who governs the pet care industry. Does anyone know? Hartz has at least one major, life-threatening recall per year it seems like. And yet they are still considered one of the major brands of pet supplies. Can you imagine if that were a brand like General Mills or a baby product company? They would already be out of business. I don't understand.

Well the fda governs the components of animal food that are fit for human consumption, but there's not really any oversite when it comes to animal by-products.

I've heard of a lot of pet food recalls lately. When we buy a product for our pets we are trusting that the food is not going to kill our pet. Just like when I buy a hamburger, I'm trusting that hamburger not to be deadly. I'm wondering if this recent trend has revealed a need for pet food manufacturers to make a change in the way they do things. Humans learn by their mistakes, hopefully that's the case here.

It seems like every few months a Hartz product is recalled. Doesn't this tell us something about the quality of products they are producing? Does anyone remember a few years ago, when their feline flea & tick products were recalled for actually killing cats? I haven't purchased Hartz products since then & never will again.

company I trust so I can feel good about them recalling this product.
