Hartz Recalls Nearly 5,000 Bags of Rawhide Chips

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation has recalled 4,850 bags of its "Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips" for dogs, after the company's routine testings found one bag was contaminated with Salmonella.

Hartz, based in Secaucus, N.J., announced the voluntary recall on Friday.

The rawhide chips, intended as snacks for dogs, were manufactured by a company in Brazil. The recalled bags were distributed to various locations, but mainly large, trademark pet stores, across the country.

No animals or humans have been reported to have contracted Salmonella or any other disease from the product, Hartz's spokesman, John Mullane told Pet Pulse today.

The move comes as a purely precautionary measure.

"We are going to look at this thoroughly to find out what could have gone wrong and consult with the manufacturing company," Mullane said.

As Hartz receives the recalled bags, the company will continue to test the products and investigate the source of the Salmonella, which can cause diarrheal illness and prove especially dangerous for small children or the elderly.

The two-pound plastic bag of chips with the lot codes "JC23282" and UPC number "3270096464" were distributed to a national retail customer Mullane could not identify.

Mullane says Hartz is now trying to get the word out on the recall, even though only one bag tested positive for Salmonella.

"The recall is intended to reassure customers and we are letting people know there is a potential for illness here," Mullane said.

This is the second recall of the year for Hartz, which pulled 739 bottles of "Vitamin Care for Cats" in March and 3,600 bottles of the same project in November 2007.

The Federal and Drug Administration's detection of Salmonella led to the "Vitamin Care for Cats" voluntary recalls.

Hartz is now suing the manufacturing company, UFAC USA Inc., for $1 million, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

Hope Hartz stays on top of these things. Sounds like they are when only finding it in one bag and putting a recall on the rest.

Sadly, we can't just look at Hartz, this is happening too often across the many brands. We have become cautious about products coming from China but who would suspect Brazil? Makes me extremely nervous about purchasing treats of any kind!!!!

Don't trust Hartz too much since years ago when I had heard their flea and tick products were giving liver damage. Granted, this was before they had to supply weight ranges - but felt it was completely irresponsible. I will give them that at least they are recalling.

I just wonder when are the Pet food companies going to start taking this stuff seriously. We feed our pets this stuff and think its safe. When in reality it's not. This touches home to me because I just lost my Black Lab to the recalled Dog food in September. I hope that they start taking things more seriously and realize these animals are our loved ones and part of our families.

A friend gave our Gurl a chew bone that made her crazy as a road lizard. Made her very aggresive toward us and our other pets. Finally got the thing away from her and the next day she was behaving like our normal sweet lil Gurl.

These articles are good thing, when people need to know which food is recommended and which companies are screwing up really bad. ( especially since I have been looking for new dog food for my puppy.)

I really don't trust anything by Hartz anymore, since I've heard of the problems & deaths that their flea & tick products have caused.

Yet, folks will still buy those products because they are cheap and easy to purchase at your local "mart" store. I wish we could print stories like these and hang them by the products. But we can't. We just have to make sure we educate folks who come into shelters to adopted.

This is scary stuff with all the recent pet recalls in the last couple of years. I am glad to see the company recalled the product before anyone has become seriously ill. I hope this prevents any dogs from consuming the contaminated product.

I don't understand why people even buy rawhide for their dogs...I have heard too many negatives and damage that they can cause...this is just one more reason to buy higher quality safer bones and treats!

I swear that this happened to my beagle mix over a year ago! She was given the Hartz rawhide rolls and within 12 hrs. of chewing one she was sooo sick with diarrhea that lasted for 24hrs. I'm a nurse and I unfortunately "know" the odor of infectious waste and for sure she food poisoning. Thank God she got over it without problems but now I won't give her any thing but boiled and sterilized beef bones. And she loves to gnaw on them without problems.

While recalls are bad, at least they are doing it. They could try to hide the problem and deal with complaints on a case by case basis. They seem to be responsible. I think it is important to keep in mind that just about everything has the potential to be dangerous. Food is always recalled for one reason or another - especially when supply lines are as long as they are. The push to earn that next dollar can lead to questionable and criminal behavior.
