Hartz Recalls Nearly 5,000 Bags of Rawhide Chips

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation has recalled 4,850 bags of its "Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips" for dogs, after the company's routine testings found one bag was contaminated with Salmonella.

Hartz, based in Secaucus, N.J., announced the voluntary recall on Friday.

The rawhide chips, intended as snacks for dogs, were manufactured by a company in Brazil. The recalled bags were distributed to various locations, but mainly large, trademark pet stores, across the country.

No animals or humans have been reported to have contracted Salmonella or any other disease from the product, Hartz's spokesman, John Mullane told Pet Pulse today.

The move comes as a purely precautionary measure.

"We are going to look at this thoroughly to find out what could have gone wrong and consult with the manufacturing company," Mullane said.

As Hartz receives the recalled bags, the company will continue to test the products and investigate the source of the Salmonella, which can cause diarrheal illness and prove especially dangerous for small children or the elderly.

The two-pound plastic bag of chips with the lot codes "JC23282" and UPC number "3270096464" were distributed to a national retail customer Mullane could not identify.

Mullane says Hartz is now trying to get the word out on the recall, even though only one bag tested positive for Salmonella.

"The recall is intended to reassure customers and we are letting people know there is a potential for illness here," Mullane said.

This is the second recall of the year for Hartz, which pulled 739 bottles of "Vitamin Care for Cats" in March and 3,600 bottles of the same project in November 2007.

The Federal and Drug Administration's detection of Salmonella led to the "Vitamin Care for Cats" voluntary recalls.

Hartz is now suing the manufacturing company, UFAC USA Inc., for $1 million, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

CUDOS to Hartz for their actions !!

Think about it, folks. THIS Company, while trying to make a profit in a shaky economy, DESTROYED 4,850 bags of manufactured, packaged, and "ready to ship" product just to protect YOUR beloved pet(s).... on the REMOTE POSSIBILITY that one of those bags MAY have been picked up and served to your pet(s) !!

It is encouraging to see responsible firms stepping up to the line and INSISTING on quality control.

This is the third review about Salmonella recall I have read in the last few days. This is just too much. There must be some cross contamination happening between the Mars and Hartz companies. That or they are one in the same. Scary.

STAY AWAY FROM HARTZ PRODUCTS!! That's the best advice I can give anyone. They poison animals with their flea treatment products too.

One main issue i see with the article.... the treats were manufactured in Brazil. What ever happened to making things in the USA?! I'm glad to see they recalled them, but it serves them right for shipping US jobs to other countries.

Here we go again. It'd be nice to be able to just give my dog a treat/food without worrying it might kill them.

Recalls are always scary. At least the companies are doing them but how long have they known about the problem before they made the recall?

I'm glad they caught this, but it is so scary to know we have to worry about these recalls when deciding on items to give our pets.

at least they did recall the product before any pets or humans became sick but it seems that whenever we have these recalls it is always from a manufacurer outside of the U.S. Maybe we should look at not importing pet food type items from other countries....

seems like this will never end...........maybe if we buy only U.S. made the risk will be less.....but it so limits what you can get.

I agree with cheriee. It is also makes you think about buying things that aren't made in the US. but even here, profit sometimes outweighs concerns about health.

There are way to many recalls. Are all the products being brought into the U.S. from other countries. Maybe it is time to start keeping things at home. Pets should not be put at risk to possibly save some money.

Just to throw my two cents in here. A helathy dog's digestive system should be able to handle a good dose of Salmonella (just think of all the different poop and dead animals dogs like to eat!).

The real worry comes with people handling these treats and not washing their hands before putting them around or in their mouths or touching their own food. Regardless of what the food is, from dry treats, to kibble, to moist food, I always wash my hands after handling it.

its hard to find something that is not contaminated. My dogs are busy bees and love to have stuff to chew on

AGAIN & AGAIN!!! Unbelievable. This is happening way too much! Now days a person is leary of buying food for our pets as well as food for ourselves. There should abviously more care & supervision in these companys. Health inspectors along with any of the other top dogs of inspections should be supervising better. These companys also need to take better care in their own supervision in their products. It is all about the money but at the same time by these companies not taking better care & stuff being recalled they are losing money. Where is the logic? There is none!

another recall. We constantly get these rawhide chips donated to our shelter, guess we will pull them and just throw them out. Its getting harder to find something that is not contaminated.

Enough with the recalls both for pet and people. Companies should care more about the productsthey are selling us, unfortunately it is always about the money. Keep your pets safe and give them as the least amount of these products as possible. I usually check the label to make sure they say made in the USA.

Although I am grateful that Hartz is recalling these particular treats....I have heard the word "recall" and "Hartz" too often in the same sentence. I have NEVER recommended Hartz to anyone that comes into our shelter, if anything, that is the one brand name that I use as an example to stay away from. Reading this, it confirms my opinion!

I'm sick of hearing of these recalls, but please! Keep them coming! Big business is long overdue for a cleaning - hopefully these recalls will not only ensure safer products in our marketplace, but also reduce our dependency on foreign goods that don't live up to our standards. I commend Hartz for taking steps such as the voluntary recall and legal action against the other company in this case, but I almost wish they would get out of the pet supply business. They are not the animal-loving family business they once were, they are now just a small part of a large foreign conglomerate that also deals in chemicals, transportation, metals...and not a whole heck of a lot of food products.

And this is why I feed my dogs nothing but all natural products! Not that salmonella can't happen anywhere, but knowing where the food/snacks are manufactured is important! I'm glad to read that no reports of salmonella poison have been reported, but most people don't know that their or their pet's illness is caused by salmonella!

It seems like all pet products are being recalled for one reason or another. It makes one leary when it comes to buying a treat/chew for your pet, because instead of giving them a reward you may be making them ill.
