Hartz Recalls Nearly 5,000 Bags of Rawhide Chips

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation has recalled 4,850 bags of its "Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips" for dogs, after the company's routine testings found one bag was contaminated with Salmonella.

Hartz, based in Secaucus, N.J., announced the voluntary recall on Friday.

The rawhide chips, intended as snacks for dogs, were manufactured by a company in Brazil. The recalled bags were distributed to various locations, but mainly large, trademark pet stores, across the country.

No animals or humans have been reported to have contracted Salmonella or any other disease from the product, Hartz's spokesman, John Mullane told Pet Pulse today.

The move comes as a purely precautionary measure.

"We are going to look at this thoroughly to find out what could have gone wrong and consult with the manufacturing company," Mullane said.

As Hartz receives the recalled bags, the company will continue to test the products and investigate the source of the Salmonella, which can cause diarrheal illness and prove especially dangerous for small children or the elderly.

The two-pound plastic bag of chips with the lot codes "JC23282" and UPC number "3270096464" were distributed to a national retail customer Mullane could not identify.

Mullane says Hartz is now trying to get the word out on the recall, even though only one bag tested positive for Salmonella.

"The recall is intended to reassure customers and we are letting people know there is a potential for illness here," Mullane said.

This is the second recall of the year for Hartz, which pulled 739 bottles of "Vitamin Care for Cats" in March and 3,600 bottles of the same project in November 2007.

The Federal and Drug Administration's detection of Salmonella led to the "Vitamin Care for Cats" voluntary recalls.

Hartz is now suing the manufacturing company, UFAC USA Inc., for $1 million, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

I'm glad the company realized there was a problem and recalled the bags. I think I did purchase these at BJs a few weeks ago though. Now I'll be hesitant to buy any store bought products. It's scary to think this can happen.

Some products should not be sold and hartz is one of them. They cause more problems than good to our pets. If you use any of the hartz products such as the flea and tick control because its cheaper please stop.

My cousin's Gold. Ret. had the beef basted ones and she had a lot of gas and she was bloated. The beef ones were not recalled but she threw them away as we think that there was a problem with these, too.

This is so terrible. These animal food companies are making millions and don't seem to care what they are doing to our pets

I'm really impressed by the caring attitude displayed by this company. They could have "waited" for more evidence of a problem, but decided to act right away.

Why is it that these tainted products from third-world countries keep getting sold, here, in the U.S.? First China, now Brazil! What does it take to ensure a safe product for our pets?

Scary to think that a brand name lots of people trust could be in danger. I think the "cheapening" of labor and prices oftentimes affects our final product.

Since I don't have time to make my own pet food, I've been buying my pet food at least a month before I need it. I'm hoping that I'll find out that a food is recalled before I feed it to my pets.

I have never and will never buy from Hartz Mountain. Their products are cheap and low quality. As for any recall, they can even affect good companies on rare occasions but rawhide or meat products from many foreign countries is suspect for contaminates. I rarely buy rawhide but when I do it is from USA beef and packaged in the USA as well. I use dehydrated sweet potatoes to give my girls a good crunch and its healthy too!

I think these constant recalls are proof enough that human and pet food should be made in the U.S. where there are stricter rules and inspections.

What is beyond me is why do we keep having other countries make and supply our pet foods and treats and it is one recall after another! Why can't they put the jobs in the USA so we can feel better about what we feed our pets and not have to keep worrying about what other countries are trying to put in the foods!

Our dogs LOVE these! Oh, no.

At least I lucked out on this recall - I just have cats right now. However, my vet does not recommend using rawhide chips, pig ears, etc. Chewed off chips can be sharp and do damage. Anyway, glad this batch is off the market!

It is so scary. There always seems to be some sort of pet product recalled. I think the pet food recall from last year really opened people's eyes to what goes into pet foods and treats. I am glad no pets got sick from this recalled product.

These companies are keeping us on the edge of our seats wondering if our shelter dogs will be exposed before we here of a recall. We just got done clearing out our feed shed bag by bag from the Mars recall. That made food, especially cat food, hard to come by for three weeks as companies that donate to us had to pull their supplies too.

Why can't we just start manufacturing these products at home. Why can't these comapnies start businesses in our own country??? Lord knows our economy could use the jobs. Glad they did the recall before anyone was sickened

Funny how all these recalls started around the same time that we started to wholesale farm out jobs to other countries. Probably just a coincidence that all the recalled products were made overseas....
