Hartz Recalls Nearly 5,000 Bags of Rawhide Chips

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation has recalled 4,850 bags of its "Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips" for dogs, after the company's routine testings found one bag was contaminated with Salmonella.

Hartz, based in Secaucus, N.J., announced the voluntary recall on Friday.

The rawhide chips, intended as snacks for dogs, were manufactured by a company in Brazil. The recalled bags were distributed to various locations, but mainly large, trademark pet stores, across the country.

No animals or humans have been reported to have contracted Salmonella or any other disease from the product, Hartz's spokesman, John Mullane told Pet Pulse today.

The move comes as a purely precautionary measure.

"We are going to look at this thoroughly to find out what could have gone wrong and consult with the manufacturing company," Mullane said.

As Hartz receives the recalled bags, the company will continue to test the products and investigate the source of the Salmonella, which can cause diarrheal illness and prove especially dangerous for small children or the elderly.

The two-pound plastic bag of chips with the lot codes "JC23282" and UPC number "3270096464" were distributed to a national retail customer Mullane could not identify.

Mullane says Hartz is now trying to get the word out on the recall, even though only one bag tested positive for Salmonella.

"The recall is intended to reassure customers and we are letting people know there is a potential for illness here," Mullane said.

This is the second recall of the year for Hartz, which pulled 739 bottles of "Vitamin Care for Cats" in March and 3,600 bottles of the same project in November 2007.

The Federal and Drug Administration's detection of Salmonella led to the "Vitamin Care for Cats" voluntary recalls.

Hartz is now suing the manufacturing company, UFAC USA Inc., for $1 million, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

I don't know if it's just more publicity, but these recalls seem to be happening with much more frequency. Does it have to do with outsourcing to other countries and not having control of quality?

This article seems recently posted, yet it's dated October 20th. Is this old news or more recent news? Luckily, I don't happen to have this in my pantry at the moment, but I think everyone should know if this is older or more recent news.

Hartz seems to have a lot of trouble with sub par products. I'd never buy these anyway because the only rawhides I will feed my dogs are compressed ones, since one of my dogs has had tremendous GI upset from eating a 'knotted' rawhide before.

It's troublesome to think that many people buy pet food and treat products from what they feel is a safe made in the usa supplier....the majority of these companies outsource for either the ingredients or manufacturing of items like this
This is why we make our own dog treats! it's fun for the family, low cost, and you know what you're putting in your dog's mouth....there are a number of web sites out there that would help you determine not only if a product has been recalled and as importantly can help you determine if a particular product contains ingredients from or has been manufactured abroad .... like they say....buyer beware! try to remeber that all these companies have one main goal...PROFIT!!

It seems to be an ongoing problem anymore. The FDA has a recall site. If you sign up it will post you everytime there is a recall of any product.

Bravo for Hartz monitoring its own products. I am glad that they are taking the initiative to ensure quality pet products. I bought all of my pet tags from this company for a very low price.

This doesn't surprise me at ALL!! Hartz is one of the worst products on the market!! I wouldn't purchase Hartz name on it!! My yorkie lost his hair because of the use of Hartz flea spray and he now has bald spots all over that I don't know if the hair will ever grow back. I WILL NEVER USE ANY PRODUCTS THAT SAYS HARTZ ON IT EVER AGAIN!!

As more and more products are being manufactured in other countries we are seeing more recalls. I do not believe the quality control of these products is good enough and wish more items were made here.

I can't help but think if we would actually start manufacturing in this country again, we could eliminate some of these recalls. I try to make sure that none of my food, or my animals', is made in China, and now I'll add Brazil to the list.

We do need a lot more regulation not only on the pet food industry but also food for human consumption. Outbreaks like this have happened way too frequently in the last few years, due to what I believe are "cost saving" moves on their part but usually end up costing them more money.

I've never given rawhide to any of my dogs, and this further convinces me not to start. There are better choices for treats and toys. Stay away from potential choking hazards - and now - salmonella!
