Hartz Recalls Nearly 5,000 Bags of Rawhide Chips

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation has recalled 4,850 bags of its "Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips" for dogs, after the company's routine testings found one bag was contaminated with Salmonella.

Hartz, based in Secaucus, N.J., announced the voluntary recall on Friday.

The rawhide chips, intended as snacks for dogs, were manufactured by a company in Brazil. The recalled bags were distributed to various locations, but mainly large, trademark pet stores, across the country.

No animals or humans have been reported to have contracted Salmonella or any other disease from the product, Hartz's spokesman, John Mullane told Pet Pulse today.

The move comes as a purely precautionary measure.

"We are going to look at this thoroughly to find out what could have gone wrong and consult with the manufacturing company," Mullane said.

As Hartz receives the recalled bags, the company will continue to test the products and investigate the source of the Salmonella, which can cause diarrheal illness and prove especially dangerous for small children or the elderly.

The two-pound plastic bag of chips with the lot codes "JC23282" and UPC number "3270096464" were distributed to a national retail customer Mullane could not identify.

Mullane says Hartz is now trying to get the word out on the recall, even though only one bag tested positive for Salmonella.

"The recall is intended to reassure customers and we are letting people know there is a potential for illness here," Mullane said.

This is the second recall of the year for Hartz, which pulled 739 bottles of "Vitamin Care for Cats" in March and 3,600 bottles of the same project in November 2007.

The Federal and Drug Administration's detection of Salmonella led to the "Vitamin Care for Cats" voluntary recalls.

Hartz is now suing the manufacturing company, UFAC USA Inc., for $1 million, as Pet Pulse previously reported.

The only problem with that is if we boycott everyone who has a potentially unsafe product, I'm not sure if there would be any products left to buy. A sad state of affairs.

Why does this not surprise me? Years ago, I used to trust the Hartz brand. These past few years, though, I avoid them like the Plague. It's sad to see the downhill turn.

Too many recalls! Im glad at least that they are quick in making the recalls and Im glad no animal has gotten sick from this one. I wish these companies would be more careful in their handling so these things would not happen so often. Mistakes like these can be fatal.

It is so hard today to know what to buy for your pets. Although , I don't purchase
Hartz for my dog, I do sometimes purchase treats for our shelter dogs when I
walk them. I probably will choose another product from now on even though
they are the ones that caught it and put out the warning.

I'm glad that Hartz is doing the recall now instead of after someone gets sick. Lessons learned from all that bad dog food, I'm sure.

Yes; at least they're proactive in this. Much better than waiting to see if any dogs get sick. Still, it worries me that this sort of thing is happening so much.

Alot of these companies need to start making daily tests of the product to maintain a higher quality and safety for pets. Companies to invest in the safety of animals and people not just try to make the extra buck

They cannot be too careful with people's furry little kids, and I'm glad to hear that they are taking those precautions.
In the past, some of my pets liked Hartz stuff. I would probably still purchase stuff from Hartz if the cats I have now didn't clearly inform me that Hartz isn't their favorite.
Good luck to them and especially to the pets that do like them.

Yes, we I read that, I thought no way, this is the tip of the iceberg. And all these comments that we are "so glad no animals got sick", and "so glad they took a pro-active approach" ...ummm. No. They are caught with something done incorrectly, and they are trying to cover it up, and let it ride. There is no way there were only 5000 made. And the recall is UPC based? why?

The US can make food and toys here, it's just that it is cheaper in other countries. However, if these companies want to score Big with the American Pet Population, why don't they start by supporting the owners, and keeping jobs in the US? The US needs the jobs here, or we're going to be a third world country!
The safety standards of China, and other countries is far below the level that I feel is safe. We should be bringing these issues to the front of the political powers that be. How can they pretend that farming out all of these jobs is anything but BAD? Bad for our pets, our kids, our economy, our jobs...just bad all the way around.

We need to bring things back to the USA!! I am convinced China has been trying to kill us off by poisoning our children with all of the lead base paint on toys! Foreign countries don't care about us and selling out our companies to the foreign countries to make more money is a horrible thing!! I try to stay with Pedigree or Diamond food because they don't use imported products and are made in the USA. They may be a tiny bit pricey, but it is worth it.

I am to a point where I think it is SAFER and smarter to get all companies back to the USA to make things. Mostly it has been China (at least from what I have seen). But now it is Brazil too. What does it take for big business to get the hint?? I say we should all contact our Congressmen/women and complain.

Hartz Recalls Nearly 500 Bags of Rawhide Chips that they feared were or might me contaminated with Salmonella. Where were they made-in Brazil. We have had hundreds of dogs die from dog food made in other countries, now this. I do not understand why we can't have these products make in our country where we would have more control of the food products for dogs and people.
