HI. Men Indicted for Killing Dog for Food

HAWAII – Two men who killed a dog for food have been indicted on felony animal cruelty charges for killing 8-month-old Caddy.

The dog had been tied to a shed at the Maunaloa Golf Course while his owner played a round of golf when the men stole it. They later came forward after a fellow employee said he saw the men putting the dog in their car.

The men claimed they needed the animal for food. In the Phillipines, eating canine meat is not considered taboo.

The responsible parties have not turned themselves in yet, but they had been arrested immediately following the incident. They were later released.

The prosecutor has asked for no bail since both men are considered flight risks since they are from the Phillipines. However, neither has a prior record.

If convicted, the men face five years in prison and $10,000 fines each. That punishment comes following toughened animal cruelty laws that were passed in Hawaii over the summer.

I hate to say it, but that owner should have never left that dog unattneded like that. It's much too sick of a world these days to risk something like that. Would anybody leave a young child unattended? Then why a dog? The days of leaving our car doors unlocked are way, way over!!

Not enough details to comment much on this one. I imagine, though, it is a crime to steal something in the Phillipines? Were they that desperate for food?

I don't think five years and 10,000 fines are severe enough punishment for this crime. I am so sorry for Caddy's owner.

I realize that in their home country they might eat dogs but this dog was a pet and if they were that hungry why didn't they hit a dumpster or go to the salvation army?

Why were they released if charges are pending & they are considered flight risks. They'll still get hungry & this might happen again.

What were they thinking? How do you look at a dog and say to yourself "I could go for a snack?" It's a golf course not a grocery store. I sincerely hope that these two are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I'm getting increasingly worried about the future of the human race.

This is really gross! I can't belive that they actually killed someones dog and ate it! Your not in the Phillipines any more, learn the American laws!

Good Grief! They could have gotten food somewhere! I can't imagine doing this unless I was starving and I don't know if I could even then.

Stealing is a no no worldwide they knew that was wrong. a food pantry would have given them food if that had asked for help. Punish Them!!!!

So they ate a dog that they stole and were released with no bail because they were flight risks??? What makes sense in that. I understand they are from a different culture however they are not in their homelands. I don't understand the release of the individuals and they are waiting for them to surrender after they were in custody. Yeah right I'm sure they will be back.

Cow, Hog, Chicken, Turtle, Goat, Fish, Rabbit...eating dog is a cultural thing. I can not fault entire cultures for their choice of meat. However, it is against the law here and on top of that they stole the dog.

That is not to say I am for killing dogs for food, but I am not a vegetarian, so I can't really fault any other culture for their choice of meat.

This is the utmost in human depravity. If these subhuman slimeballs had enough money to travel to Hawaii, they had enough money for food. I am glad the jusdge considered them a flight risk and refused bail.

If you have enough money to be driving a car around, you've got enough money to eat something other than someone's dog. Just sell your car!

Unfortunately, some cultures consider dogs as food. However, ours doesn't, and they need to be punished under our laws. If you are in this country, you obey the law, or you don't need to be here.

What the h--- is wrong with peopple? Including the man who tied his animal up at the golf course?? Some golfers are pretty stupid!! As for the dog eaters-they should be made to eat manure for the rest of their lives-wonder why they couldn't go get a job at a burger joint? Can we say LAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is hard to believe that this happened in 2008.....maybe in the '30's but today, this seems absurd. Totally! I don't know what criminal charges can be levied against them but strong consideration must be given to teaching them a lesson about learning the laws and rules of the land onwhich they reside. Although its difficult to believe that they didn't know it was wrong.

Too sick for words. These miscreants came to Hawaii from the Phillipines, one would have to assume to find work. So one fine day they make their way to Maunoloa Golf Course--NOTE IN A CAR--and proceed to steal someone's dog for food. They exhibited a total lack of respect for U.S. laws. Give them five years each in prison and then kick them the hell out!

Even if they were telling the truth about needing the dog for food, they should have been smarter than to steal it from someone in a country that frowns upon eating pets. I think they deserve whatever punishment they get.
