Halloween Pet Safety Tips

Browse News

Well it's Halloween, and many of us will be celebrating with candy, costumes and our companion animals. But before the festivities begin, we thought we could provide you with a few tips to keep your pet safe.

The ASPCA and Last Chance for Animals recommend the following:

Animals can become disoriented and confused by the constant barrage of trick-or-treaters – and all that door-bell ringing. Make sure your pet has a quiet place to rest during the ruckus.

Stressed animals often try to flee or hide – so keep an eye on them and their condition. Look for tucked tails, shaky legs and any unusual behavior – and make sure they don't slip out the front door!

Chocolate is especially bad for pets – an animal who's eaten chocolate may have the following symptoms; vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivity, and increased thirst, urination and heart rate.

Of course, candy is generally not a good thing for animals. Neither are those decorations our pets sometimes like to chew on – like my foam pumpkin – which suffered the fate of my cat's claws – thanks Holden.

Finally, and some of you won't like this one – pets typically don't like costumes. So, if your pup seems out of sorts with his underdog outfit, he probably is. Might be a good idea to take it off.

I just want to say that only a few days after Halloween we found a stray cat. We tried hard to find his owners, but couldn't come up with any, so we adopted him. However, we have assumed that he snuck out the door on Halloween and then ran when he saw all of the people. He's really afraid of both cars and strangers. Even an animal that never runs out the door may be spooked on Halloween.

Good tips. I think my dogs look so cute dressed up, but I know they hate it so much. I did it one year and have never done it since. I am sure they are relieved.

It's best to confine your animals to one room if you get trick or treaters.

Good reminder to keep candy away from animals and to provide a place for the dog to be -- away from the trick or treaters at the dog.

nice article, i know my dog will be costume free, away from the dog, and given a toy to pass the time until the trick or treaters leave.

there's also the worry about keeping black cats in due to pranks involving them at Haloween, also. My dogs hat it-all the peolpe comming to the door. I am careful not to let them anywhere near the door for their AND the kid's sake since you never know what a soppked animal may do.

Excellent advice but one would think that if you have a pet you would already know these things.

We always have one episode or more at the vet clinic (around any of the big chocolate holidays) with a pet getting into chocolate so certainly that is one of the most important tips here - and the advice to be careful that they do not slip outside. My neighbors old lab got out at Halloween a year ago and tried to follow some children - we live in a pretty rural area so old timer that he was he did become lost - thankfully he was only about a mile down the road and those neighbors knew him and called - but hate to think what could have happened if he had kept wandering in the dark on dark roads .. protect them and keep them safe

With Easter a month away, I hope pet stores do not bring in bunnies and chicks to sell. I think things have gotten much better since I was a child and you could buy poor dyed little chicks. Just a reminder that any holiday can be dangerous to a pet - Easter candy is around so watch those chocolates.

We used to have a black cat would attempt to escape every halloween. It was always a worry. These are some great tips. We started sitting out in the driveway to pass out candy so none of the animals would be bothered by the doorbell or tempted by the open door.

Probably the most important part of this story is the mention of chocolate being poisonous to dogs. This tip isn't just relevant at Halloween, but Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc. We found out the hard way after our 50 lb. shepherd mix ate an entire pan of brownies off the counter. The vet had to pump her stomach, give her IV fluids, and keep her overnight. She will be on meds for the next 5 days. Dogs cannot tolerate pure chocolate or candy, so please keep it in a place they can't reach.

If your pet doesn't like the doorbell ringing, either sit outside alone or put your pet in a room with some toys. It's just using your common sense for holidays like this.

I lock up all my animals (cats & dog) Halloween night for their own safety. Plus, I think it scares the kiddos to hear my big dog barking at them from the front window!
