Group: Buy Easter Bunnies - the Chocolate Kind

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Thinking of Easter can cause a sweet tooth to ache with visions of baskets brimming with jelly beans and chocolate bunnies. But that’s exactly the hoped-for result one Ohio group wants.

Make Mine Chocolate is the campaign launched by the Columbus House Rabbit Society to combat the surge of unwanted pet rabbits following the Easter season.

“We were constantly getting calls about rabbits no longer wanted all year round, but certainly at Easter because it’s an impulse buy,” said Karalee Curry, president of CHRS. “So we started a campaign to increase awareness of the commitment involved with owning a rabbit.”

In the Columbus area, the society statistically tracked a 62% increase of calls and e-mails to regional shelters with requests to drop off rabbits -- coinciding with the average onset of puberty in Easter bunnies.

“It’s usually at the end of summer and the beginning of fall, that we see the jump, depending on what kind of bunny it was and how old it was (when bought),” said Curry, who reported larger breeds mature between eight and 10 months of age, while the more popular “Easter bunny” tend to include smaller breeds which mature around six months of age.

The problem, according to Curry, stems from the influence of media advertisements and the stereotypical notion that rabbits are a cuddly, greeting card animal.

“It contributes to the problem,” said Curry. “Everything –- America -- is based on visual stuff, so when we see it, people think, ‘Oh that’s a good idea, let me check into getting Suzy a rabbit for Easter.’ ”

But the campaign is out to change that mentality by increasing the public’s awareness about owning rabbits. And they aren’t the only ones spreading the word on impulse pet ownership.

“Although animals may be a surprising and enjoyable Easter gift, they should not be purchased on a whim,” said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin, who issued the caution in a press release earlier this month.

The commissioner’s message was echoed by Dr. Ella Boyd, a veterinarian and the public health coordinator for Ocean County, N.J.

“A stuffed baby animal will give your child as much satisfaction as a live one,” said Boyd, who also noted rabbits and chicks should not be handled by young children as there is a chance for contracting diseases, such as Salmonella bacteria.

(Eds. Note: Rabbits are not carriers of Salmonella bacteria; but can carry mite-born skin diseases, contagious to humans, such as sarcoptic mange.)

The impulse buys all too often lead to a strain on local shelters and rescue groups.

“They must deal with the cost and the heartbreak of caring for, trying to find homes for and, sadly, sometimes having to euthanize these animals after the holiday is over,” said Irvin.

But the six-year old Make Mine Chocolate campaign -- which has had a national presence since 2004 -- is boosting the country’s overall education level of Easter bunnies, said Curry.

As a result, “some of the stores have agreed to not sell rabbits around Easter, but the larger ones don’t,” said Curry of Ohio’s pet retailers.

“And, unfortunately, there are new people ever year that don’t know about it, and don’t think about the long-term care of the bunny, or they think there kids is different or their situation is different,” said Curry.

So for Curry and the Make Mine Chocolate campaign, the mission continues until “there are no bunnies bought at Easter and the connection between ‘buy bunnies at Easter’ is lost.”

While her goal might seem lofty, it could be a reality sooner rather than later -- if a recent survey is any predicator.

The National Confectioners Association reports that chocolate and candy bunnies far outrank live rabbits as the preferred Easter gift of Americans.

Of those surveyed, 82 percent said they would most like to receive a confectioned bunny, while four percent said they would prefer a live rabbit for Easter.

This is a no-brainer. Chocolate vs something you have to feed, water, clean up after. I wish stores wouldn't sell them EVER, but there are always irresponsible breeders who will.

It would be great if real bunnies would not be thought of as Easter pets and then discarded after the excitement wears off. The chocolate bunnies sound like a much better alternative.

My rabbit rescue fully supports this campaign and even recently became a partner with it!! We have bought the MMC pins and are selling them to raise money and awareness for Easter Bunnies! Spread the word that chocolate bunnies are MUCH more fulfilling than real bunnies at Easter time!!

Hopefully people will take this to heart and bring home the chocolate instead of a new pet. Gotta plan for something like that, and who doesn't love chocolate!

Sadly, it's almost time for this to happen again. I would never get any pet for another person on a whim. It should be a serious thought with keeping in mind that the animal needs long term care....just not at Easter. I wish stores didn't sell bunnies this time of year but who is gonna stop them.

It's all good and fine if you're actually going to take care of it, but I'd rather not have a bunny. I wouldn't connect the two, because, really, why would you get a pet for someone else?

I agree whole heartedly! I would much rather have a chocolate one than a real one any day, mainly because I am not willing to spend the time and money needed to take care of a rabbit that I really don't want. As with any other pet, people need to quit being so impulsive buying them and need to think out the purchase before putting up the money. These people need to remember that this rabbit is a living breathing creature that has needs, such as vet care, food, water, clean living quarters, etc.

Impulse buying, bunnies/ducklings, sure their small and cute, but they do grow up and then what do you do. This is a good campaign and should be done again in 2009, kids enjoy chocolate candy just as well. Most of these animals belong on farms, not in someone's livingroom.

Why would anyone buy a rabbit for Easter?! I just don't get it. It seems like such a foolish thing to do when rabbits are really not the typical sort of pet and most people are just not familiar with how to care for them properly. Go chocolate!

Easter 2009 will be here soon. I hope the chocolate rabbit campaign is repeated this year. Some people still don't realize the responsibilities that go with any pet; they have to be informed. If, after finding out about all it requires to give a pet a good home, a person/family still wants that pet, it will probably be great for the pet and human(s) alike.

I think the idea is good, buying chocolate bunnies instead of the real deal. Chocolate can be easily thrown away when it's not fun or cute anymore.

It's good to see that someone is finally focusing on the bunnies that are "unwanted" after Easter. I find it sad how little thought people give to buying or adopting pets beforehand - so a group like this is great!

When I was a kid, it wasn't unusualy to see baby chicks dyed "Easter colors" and given away by some stores. Thank goodness for local and national animal welfare groups that protested this practice and got it ended. Kudos to those who are carrying on the protest concerning rabbits.

People just don't take into consideration it's a living thing they are buying. Reminds me of the Halloween story where shelters won't adopt out black cats around the Halloween season.

I think that education is so important before buying/adopting an animal. I have seen rabbits that have been surrendered from impulse buying. I really would like the whole idea of a pet shop to change too. Chocolate bunnies or stuffed ones are the best for younger kids.

I agree chocolate rabbit please, I am involved in a local shelter in a rural area that gets there fair share of rabbits after the Easter holiday, rabbits that the kids lost interest in and they come with hock burn or are so mean because they have in never been handled I started out just fostering these creatures until homes could be found but it seemed one found a home and five would be surrendered and many times the does were ready to kindle, so lots of rabbits, I finally made my mind up that I would be the place that these little guys would live the rest of their lives out, plenty to eat and drink, soft gentle touches, each with names, and no more would they have unwanted litters or children than no longer wanted them.
Go Chocolate Bunnies this year please and then all you will have to do is wash your little ones face and not have to find a home for an unwanted pet.

I have actively supported this campaign for the last two years. A very important part of the campaign is to educate people about rabbit health, behavior, and care before they bring a bunny into their homes. Many people are not aware of what is involved being a responsible rabbit owner. Topics such as spay and neuter for rabbits, their instinctive need to chew and dig, special dietary needs, exercise requirements, grooming, and lifespan are all addressed in this campaign. I hope that our efforts will help people make an informed decision about whether a rabbit is the right pet for them.

Good for you. I hadn't heard about it. Glad it was brought up. But, I agree with DR, will it stop people from purchasing bunnies? But, I can't totally support this since I cannot stand the taste of chocolate! Now, that's not human, I've been told.
