Goats Storm Through Security Fence Near NYC Bridge

Browse News

NEW YORK -- It was a report calculated to send chills through those charged with anti-terrorist vigilance in New York City: Bearded intruders secretly penetrate heavily guarded transportation site.

But it turned out the would-be trespassers were goats imported by the National Park Service to clean up poison ivy and other unwanted weeds at historic Fort Wadsworth, a 200-year-old Revolutionary War rampart on Staten Island near the Verrazano Bridge.

Brian Feeney, a park service spokesman, said the goats are brought down yearly from a farm near Rhinebeck, N.Y., and escaped about two weeks ago.

According to officials, the dozen goats -- or, as the Daily News described them, “weapons of grass destruction” -- managed to slip under a metal fence separating the fort from bridge property, without setting off electronic alarms or sensors installed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to guard against intruders.

In a statement, the MTA’s Bridge and Tunnel Division said the fence was not actually part of the bridge protection system. Because the animals did not get past a second, more formidable fence, the agency said, “there was no security breach” affecting the bridge that spans New York harbor between Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The goats were spotted by a human bridge guard, rounded up and put back in their pen at Fort Wadsworth.

This is too funny! Goats should be used to test alarm systems. Just let them loose and see how far they get.

Ha, goats are tricksters, aren't they? I would take a look at that security though, if the goat got through without notice.

Thats kind of scary! If a goat can be graceful and sneaky enough to go under the fence without triggering alarms, well then of course a bad intentioned person can too!

I think it was John Muir who called goats four-footed locusts. They use goats on Twin Peaks in San Francisco too. I thought the goats not only ate the vegetation but also pulled up the roots too. Won't using them lead to erosion problems?

We do this in our town too, but there is so much to eat they are too busy munching to want to get away. Had a bull get loose once and the power company studs rounded him up before animal control got there.

In a way this is a great story--the goats made a break for it....,but they did manage to slip under a metal fence without setting off the electronic alarms or sensors and that is certainly something to think about!

That's funny. That goes to tell you goats can be 'weapons of grass destruction'. I have 2 goats and they are grass destruction, even 4-wheeler destruction because my friend had a goat and she ate her 4-wheeler seat! LOL.

I have heard of Goats eating blackberry vines. Those vines are full of stickers, I don't understand how a Goat can digest it but I guess they eat about everything. I have given strong consideration of getting a couple for our back area. You can rent them-

I was unaware that goats were used to eat poison ivy, but case-in-point they do eat anything and everything they come across. My question is the area that the goats breached, are they currently fixing the bugs in that system? Those buggers are smart, if there is a way they'll figure it out!

Goats are very smart and they will find the weak spots in a fence every time in search of food. Which is why my goats have a six foot tall chain link fence, reinforced at the bottom with concrete (We added the concrete to protect them from dogs tunneling under, but also because one of them found a high spot and slipped under the fence). We even had to start locking the gate when our boer/pygmy cross learned how to open the latch on the gate after watching us open and close the gate. They don't care that they get all the hay and grass a goat would want, plus goat chow....after all, the grass is always greener....

Brea, the burn victim description is right on the money. I get it like that 2-4 times each year (for the past 20 years). It is horrible.

Brea, imagine your mom's case and having that happen three or even four times a year, every year for the past 20 years. A burn victim is exactly how I look, from head to toe. It is horrible. Wiggles is so sweet and kind when I get it; no person was ever so sympathetic or patient. The swelling is so bad that places actually crack open (like my chin, earlobes, etc.), and my eyes and throat almost swell shut.
