Goat, Owner Share In New Leg

Browse News

WOODSTOCK, N.Y. – Brooklyn is one of the last places you’d expect to find a male goat wandering the streets, but after being found there originally earmarked as food, Albie is now instead part of a loving home.

“It appeared that he had been hog tied, which is basically where all four legs are tied together,” said Jenny Brown, founder of the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in upstate New York. “He was probably purchased from a live stock auction and was intended for food, but he escaped.”

Animal Care and Control in New York City called Brown about Albie, and she agreed to take him. A veterinarian, however, determined that his left front leg required amputation, and Albie now has a stump there that is several inches long.

Suddenly, Brown and Albie had a special connection.

“When I was 10 years old, I lost my leg after three years in the hospital with chemotherapy,” Brown said. “So I had to have my leg amputated from the knee down.

“I did feel something really special with Albie, and I didn’t want him to go through life without the leg that he had.”

Since Brown was satisfied with her artificial leg, she called her prosthetics maker, who offered to help Albie – for free. Albie may be one of the only goats in the U.S., if not the world, to be living with a prosthetic leg.

Pet Pulse watched as Albie had a mold taken for his prosthesis by certified prosthetist Eric Tomkins, who made a house call to the animal sanctuary. For now, Albie will use a temporary prosthesis until the permanent one is ready.

“This is my goat bag,” he said, doing some show-and-tell, preparing to examine Albie on a bed of hay in a barn. “And this was Albie’s first cast when he first had his amputation done.

“Okay, relax,” Tomkins told Albie, gently massaging his back.

Tomkins applied a temporary “peg leg” made of wood, fastened to the side of his stump, serving as a brace. It’s a narrow dowel with a rubber tip at the bottom, similar to a walker for humans.

Tomkins says he’s glad to help Albie, especially considering the trauma he’s been through.

“I think the wrong that’s happening in our society, you hear about what they do with animals,” he said. “And in Albie’s case they had hog tied him, which led to the amputation.

“So it was really wrong, and I’ll try to right that wrong if I can.”

Then it was time for Albie to test his new leg.

“So let’s see how Albie does,” Tomkins said, holding out some grain, coaxing him to walk.

Finding the ideal fit could take weeks, even months. For now, though, Albie seemed to be moving well with his new attachment, even hopping smoothly onto a large rock.

“He’s actually doing great!” an excited Tomkins said.

“It took me a long time to get comfortable with my artificial leg, and be able to run and become active and do all the things I really wanted to do,” Brown said.

“And I really want the same thing for Albie.”

Being a NYC resident, I've passed "live markets." There are a couple near me in Queens. I think the whole concept of going into a place and picking out an animal to slaughter is revolting whether it's livestock or a lobster in a tank. Thank goodness that this animal's life has been spared and that there are caring people in the world willing to go out of their way to make the rest of his life an enjoyable one.

All I could think about in reading this story is how did the goat escape while he was hog tied?

Watch this video and it definitely reinforces the fact that animals have fear. Thank goodness for the kind people who wanted to help this goat.

Love seeing this sort of compassion and consideration. Would love to see this as a more viable option with horses, if possible.

I am so excited to hear Albie is going to get a new leg! There are still people out there that care so much about animals! I love reviewing these happy stories about animal love & care. What a great person to be willing to do the prosthesis for no charge. A big thank you to Eric Tomkins! It's really refreshing to remember there are great people doing great things for animals. Sometimes it all seems so bad w/ animals being abused & such. This story reminds you that there is still hope. Thank you also to Jenny Brown founder of WoodStock Farm Animal Sanctuary for taking in Albie when she got the call that he needed help.

This is a wonderful story and happy ending for the little goat. I am so glad he got free even if he has to wear a prosthetic leg. Looks like he is doing quite well with. I am so glad the girl is taking good care of him. I can't imagine anyone doing such a thing to an animal. Thanks to the prosthetic guy who is doing all of this for him. I am a animal of all kinds. They are truly the most loyal to you as part of your family. I hate puppy mills and wish all were outlawed. So cruel.

I bet Albie would be equally happy with three legs considering his life was spared. I love goats. They are so cool. I have actually been telling my friends that I'm considering moving to Vermont, raising goats and making cheese!

That is wonderful that the goat got a second chance at life and a new leg! It is so horrible how we allow this kind of abuse in our society- animals have no rights and it is a shame. No creature should be harmed. I think it is great that the lady and the goat have a special bond.

Just when you get really tired of hearing about all of the animal abuse (todays story to make you sick is the dog with the collar with 15 fish hooks in it) along comes a story like this to remind us that there are a lot more really caring and compassionate people than you think out there.

I wish that some of the news orgs out there would pick up on stories like this and use them too. CNN made sure to report on the story about the fish hooks in the collar but did they report this story? NOPE!! Stories like this don't "Sell" but crime and violence do.

Very good point! It's sad that crime & violence get peoples attention on news reports. I would love to see heart warming stories of rescue & life saving. Maybe if they aired more of these stories people would see it as the correct thing to do. Maybe motivate more people to step up & turn in animal abuse where before they just kept quiet. The news reports could give a number to call if you witness animal abuse & encourage viewers to call this in.

Isn't it so amazing how one person's situation, was used for good later on to help an animal in a similar situation? Just my opinion, but I'm a firm believer that all things happen for a reason and you're where you're supposed to be, even if that place isn't pleasant. I think it's beautiful how everyhting came together so Albie could find someone who could relate to him and love him, through this situation. This is awesome!
